The light welterweight division was shaken up last night as Lucas Martin Matthysse destroyed Lamont Peterson in short order at Atlantic City's famed Boardwalk hall.
Neither Matthysse's WBC Interim crown or Peterson's WBA belt were on the line but that failed to make an impression on the fighters, who went at it full bore from the opening bell.
The first frame saw Matthysse pressing hard, lunging in with lefts, rights and body jabs, which mostly missed, sometimes wildly. Peterson kept on the move, maintaining distance with his jab. In the closing seconds, the Washington DC native slowed down for just a second and was caught with sharp right at the bell. More...

In a vicious two-way slugfest, Guillermo Jones regained his WBA cruiserweight crown tonight by knocking out reigning champion Denis Lebedev in the 11th round of their contest at Crocus City Hall, Moscow.
Having lost his WBA belt due to inactivity, the 41 year old Guillermo Jones, of Panama, came into Moscow determined to get it back from 33 year old Lebedev, of Chekhov, Russia, and the bout was laced with action starting in the first round.
The 6'4 Jones towered over the 5'11 Lebedev, using his heavy jab to keep the smaller man at bay but all too often Jones decided to slug it out, giving up his height.
On many occasions, Jones reached for Lebedev, over-extending himself and going off balance when he missed. Lebedev took advantage of such opportunities and planted heavy shots point blank on Jones but the Panamanian showed an iron chin in taking the punches well.
The jab of Guillermo Jones produced damage to Lebedev's eye early on and the taller man focused successfully on worsening the laceration for the entire bout. More...

Howard Goldberg: The next few months in the World Boxing Federation's calendar are chaotic in a good way. Just watch the Schedule section on our website: There are fights scheduled in Mexico, Morocco, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and a few more countries to be finalized rather soon and of course we are extremely excited to be holding our convention in Saarbruecken, Germany in September where we hope to meet up with old friends and naturally make many new friends.
Having lived my whole life in South Africa, I witnessed the ugliness and horror of apartheid, where the masses were ruled by a small minority and where democracy simply did not exist. The minority ruled with great force and often intimidated the masses with torture and victimization.
It was a sad time in South Africa's history, but the release of Nelson Mandela, arguably the greatest man in the world, coupled with free and democratic elections enabled South Africa to become a free and great country. The bottom line is that inevitably democracy and freedom will always triumph over bullying and intimidation. Nowhere in the world should such a horror similar to apartheid be allowed to resurface.
