Boxing In South America: Saturday Night Results

By Alejandro Tostado August 9th, 2009 All Boxing Results

The big action last night in The Land of Silver took place Polideportivo Carlos Cerutti in Cordoba, Argentina as former WBO super feather champ Jorge Barrios made the jump to the lightweight division with great success.

"La Hiena" tangled with experienced Panamanian Moises Castro over 12 scheduled rounds for the vacant Interim WBO Latino belt in front of a pro-Barrios crowd of over 3,000.

Castro proved difficult to land flush against as "La Cobrita" went defensive and gave tough angles from a southpaw stance, frustrating Barrios for rounds at a time.

But the world class experience of Barrios shone through as the 33 year old from Tigre controlled the pace of the bout and simply outworked Castro enroute to posting a 120-110, 119-108 and 119-112 unanimous decision victory. More...

Boxing Preview: Jorge Barrios, Saul Alvarez In Action Tonight

By Alejandro Tostado August 8th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Ex-WBO super feather champion Jorge Rodrigo Barrios makes the move up to lightweight tonight when he faces Moises Castro for the Interim WBO crown at Polideportivo Carlos Cerutti in Cordoba, Argentina.

Barrios, 47-4-1 (34), fought everyone at super feather and now wants the world's hardest puncher at any weight, WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero, but first, "La Hiena" has to take care of Panamanian foe Castro, 27-11-4 (13).

The Tigre based Argentine hero has only lost in hard fought affairs to Acelino Freitas, Joan Guzman and Rocky Juarez over the last 12 years and the 33 year old has definitely traded in much more experienced company than has Castro.

11 year pro Castro started at super flyweight and came up the hard way in Managua, battling it out up through successive divisions in relative obscurity but the tall southpaw is coming off a good performance during a 10 round loss to former WBA lightweight champ Jose Alfaro and "La Cobrita" could definitely make things difficult for Barrios or even cause an upset.

The undercard sees lightweight Israel Hector Enrique Perez, 22-2 (13), square off with Alberto Leopoldo Santillan, 15-2 (4), over ten rounds. More...

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado March 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

A lot of action took place south of the border this weekend, mostly in Argentina and we kick this report off in The Land of Silver with a massive show at Club Atletico Newell's Old Boys in Rosario on Saturday.

South America's top welterweight, Sebastian Andres Lujan, 31-5-2 (20), headlined the card but was pushed hard by Venezuela's Charlie Jose Navarro, 17-3 (12), who lost a hard fought majority decision to Lujan.

One of the best light welter prospects in the world was also in action at Rosario as Lucas Martin Matthysse, 24-0 (22), knocked out Luis Ernesto Jose, 29-6-2 (24), in the second round, while super feather Carlos Ricardo Rodriguez, 20-2 (11), knocked out Alberto Leopoldo Santillan, 15-2 (4), in the sixth. Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado December 7th, 2008 All Boxing Results

The biggest boxing card this weekend was actually on Thursday at the famed Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where three title fights took place.

The South American and WBO Latino Cruiserweight titles were fought over by Victor Emilio Ramirez, 13-1 (11), and Hector Ricardo Sotelo, 18-10-2 (6), with the 24 year old local man Ramirez, aka "El Tyson de Abasto", stopping crosstown rival and former Argentine Light Heavy Champ Sotelo in the second round.

There was a big unification showdown as well with local legend, WBA Female Super Bantam Marcela Eliana "El Tigresa" Acuna, 31-5 (16), winning her twelfth straight contest to rip the WBC belt away from Cordoba's Alejandra Marina Oliveras, 12-1-2 (4), in a hard fought ten round unanimous decision.

Yesica Yolanda Bopp, 7-0 (3), continued the Buenos Aires victory parade as she dropped Venezuelan visitor Ana Fernandez, 8-3 (5), in the third enroute to posting a wide points verdict after ten frames to secure the vacant WBA Female Light Flyweight title.

There was also action on Friday in Argentina with South American Light Middle Champ Javier Alberto Mamani, 35-7-1 (19), delighting his hometown fans with a ten round points win in a non-title bout against Cordoba man Valentin Antonio Ochoa, 19-10-1 (8), at General Guemes in Salta. More...
