‘Andreas Kotelnik’

By Nick Chamberlain August 6th, 2009 All Boxing Articles
On Saturday, July 18, Amir Khan fulfilled a promise he made to himself and the nation when he beat Andreas Kotelnik over 12 rounds to become WBA Light Welterweight Champion. The journey to get there was not easy; by the same token it was not that hard either.
With his record now standing at 21-1 (15), Khan has some notable scalps on his record as Kotelnik joins the list along with Marco Antonio Barrera, Oisin Fagan, and Michael Gomez. The latter two are not exactly world class, but both hard veterans of the ring, they know their crafts very well and are good on a domestic and inter-continental level.
Barrera was well past his best when they fought in March of this year and the fight was stopped, quite controversially, after Barrera was cut in the first, which effectively blinded him in one eye.
The controversy happened when the doctor stopped it in the fifth and it went to the scorecards. Had he stopped it in any point through rounds 1-4, then it would have been deemed a No-Contest. Khan looked to be in control of this fight, but if the Barrera is saying he couldn't see, then surely it's an unfair contest.
Andreas Kotelnik was a tough, well-schooled, technical and precise counter puncher. Khan did not give him the opportunity to get his own punches off though and did a great job of covering up or using his nifty movement to skip out of the way, he did this impressively for the full 12 rounds, even when Kotelnik pushed him in the 11th and 12th rounds as he knew he had to secure the knockout.
Khan has always had his doubters and fair share of critics, who were rather pleased with themselves after a young undefeated Colombian came along by the name of Breidis Prescott, and knocked Khan out in 54 seconds of the first round at the MEN Arena in September, 2008.
After that defeat and the change of trainer and camp, Khan says it was the best thing that could have happened to him as a boxer, and you have to agree as a day before Khan took the world title belt off Kotelnik, Prescott suffered his first loss to Miguel Vazquez. More...

Last night at Stadhalle in Rostock, Germany, WBA Champions Ruslan Chagaev and Andriy Kotelnik retained their title belts at heavyweight and light welter, respectively.
Chagaev, 25-0-1 (17), technically a "champion in recess", handled the challenge of previously undefeated Costa Rican Carl Davis Drumond, 26-1 (20), well, outboxing his rival until suffering a bad cut above the left eye in the third from an accidental headbutt, which forced the bout to go to the cards after the end of round six.
While Drumond had a few good moments in the third and sixth rounds, it was another good display from Chagaev as the 30 year old Uzbek southpaw was awarded a 60-54 and 58-56 twice unanimous technical decision victory and will likely face the "other" WBA champion, Nicolai Valuev, in a rematch this summer.
33 year old Drumond suffers his first defeat after four years as a professional. More...

"See a cardiologist and then call me if you have a change of heart!"
I was told that Andreas Kotelnik would not be defending his WBA Junior Welterweight Championship against me because he injured a rib in his fight on September 13th. I then read on another website that he didn't come to fight me in Madison Square Garden because he wasn't offered enough money. Last week it was his rib, and this week it's the money...
Andreas, make up your mind which excuse will be used not to take the fight. It is obvious to me that he doesn't want to fight me. Everything that he asked for was agreed to by my promoter. The deal had been practically done before he even fought in the Ukraine, so to say the money wasn't enough doesn't make sense after the negotiations.
I am now focused on Willie Limond, 29-2, who is a tough fighter. I have geared up my preparations towards facing him on November 8th. If down the road Andreas sees his cardiologist and has a change of heart, call Square Ring and make the fight happen.

It took Andreas Kotelnik almost eight years to win a world title and the 30 year old showed that he isn't ready to part with it yet, outpointing southpaw challenger and longtime Japanese Light Welter titlist Norio Kimura in dominating fashion at the Sportspalace in Lviv, Ukraine last night.
Hometoen hero Kotelnik won on wide margins 119-109 twice and 118-110 to retain the WBA Light Welter trophy he won in March of this year against Gavin Rees.
Kotelnik improves to 30-2-1 (13), and may next defend in November against Dmitriy Salita at Madison Square Garden in New York. Kimura saw a 17 bout win streak snapped and goes to 34-6-2 (18).
Heavyweight Dieter Roth, 19-0 (12), also saw action, posting an eight round decision over Edgar Kelnars, 17-15 (9).

Saturday night saw Welshman Gavin Reesʽs first defence of his WBA World Light Welterweight title against Ukranian Andreas Kotelnik at Cardiff International Arena, Wales in a Sports Network promoted Fightnight.
Kotelnik, based in Hamburg, Germany, entered the ring ahead of a relaxed Gavin ʽThe Rockʼ Rees. The undefeated Rees won the title from Souleymane MʽBaye in July 2007 by unanimous points decision.
It was a good first few rounds from Rees, but he dips during the mid-rounds and in the seventh, he is inspected by the doctor for damage to the left eye area. He looks to be doing well to hang on in the closing seconds of the frame as he takes a number of punches from the Ukrianian.
It was a close contest but the quality punches have come from Kotelnik and both men sense this final round could be the decider. Rees forgets his defence and looks for the big punch but he is clearly exhausted.
With 50 seconds of round 12 to go, a left followed by a big right comes from Kotelnik and seconds later Rees falls to the canvas. The referee signals it is a slip and he helps the Welshman to his feet, but Rees looks dazed and moments later the referee calls a stop to the contest in the last half minute of the twelfth and final round, with Rees judged unfit to continue.
