‘Angel McKenzie’

British Featherweight Marianne Marston Added To Rooney’s Gym Staff

By Boxing Press October 26th, 2009 All Press Releases

Women’s boxing has justifiably been receiving a lot of attention recently, firstly with the announcement that it will be included in the London Olympics in 2012 and then the first live broadcast of an all female professional bout, between Big Brother star Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie and Lana Cooper, on British network television.

In some ways it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Boxing gyms up and down the country are suddenly beginning to take female participation in the sport seriously.

What may surprise some though is that there is a gym in London that not only has actively supported women’s boxing but has also been training female fighters for a number of years.

The gym in question, Rooney’s Boxing Gym, formerly Gleason’s London, has had many of the best known female boxers, including five time World Champion, the late, great Gisselle Salandy, Laura Saperstein, Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie, Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston etc, train at their world class facility close to the famous London landmark, Tower Bridge. Boxing In Britain: Friday Night Results

By Ricky Jones September 19th, 2009 All Boxing Results

It was a good Friday night at the fights all across Britain and we kick things off at historic York Hall in London's Bethnal Green.

Light welters Lenny Daws and Barry Morrison tangled in a rematch for the vacant British title and Daws managed to reverse his 2007 loss to the Scot.

Last time out Morrison squeaked out a split decision to lift the British crown but this time Daws took it away from the judges and knocked out his rival at 1:30 of the tenth frame to capture the vacant domestic belt.

Daws wins his fifth bout on the bounce to go to 20-1-1 (8), while Morrison drops to 17-4-1 (7), suffering the first stoppage loss of his career. More...

Saturday night at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, Hennessy Sports promoted a fight night headlined by the British Light Heavyweight title clash between Commonwealth Champion Nathan Cleverly and English Champion Danny McIntosh.

Cleverly of Cefn Forest, Wales, enters the ring first, clearly enjoying the atmosphere of the York Hall.

Confident McIntosh jumps over the top rope and in to the ring, striding over to Cleverly before being stopped by referee Howard Foster.

Obviously very ‘fired-up’, McIntosh goads "Clev" from his corner position until trainer Brendan Ingle steps in front of him to keep him back. More...

Boxing In Britain: Clevery Stops McIntosh For British Title

By Ricky Jones July 19th, 2009 All Boxing Results

A big light heavyweight showdown took place tonight at London's York Hall with Nathan Cleverly emerging as the new British champion after defeating Danny McIntosh.

Already the Commonwealth titlist, Cleverly had one last obstacle to clear in the form of English belt holder McIntosh in order to begin the long climb to the world stage.

And clear it he did, but not without an argument from the Norwich based brawler.

Cleverly immediately looked the classier fighter once the bell rang as he was quicker than McIntosh and took advantage of the almost non existent defense of his rival. More...

Big Brother’s Angel returns to the ring

By Boxing Press July 2nd, 2009 All Press Releases

Big Brother star Angel McKenzie is ready to resume her boxing career after her eviction from the Big Brother house last week. The Russian born Londoner says her stint on the hit show has renewed her enthusiasm for her professional boxing career and she’s wasted no time in lining up her next fight with a bout at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on July 18th.

McKenzie will have her eighteenth professional fight on the undercard of the Danny McIntosh – Nathan Cleverly British Light Heavyweight title fight with the Hennessy Sports event live on ITV4.

The 31-year-old has revealed that the pressure of being inside the Big Brother house is nothing compared to the pressure of being in the ring. “The pressure if far greater when you are a boxer,” said McKenzie. “In boxing the main muscle you need is your heart because when you are in the ring with another boxer then you really know what pressure is all about. The Big Brother house was nothing compared to that.” More...

Big Brother Boxer Angel McKenzie

By Jane Warburton June 5th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

I’m not a fan of the TV show "Big Brother", but I do like to watch the launch night to see what sort of a ‘mottley crew’ are going in. So imagine my shock last night when I saw female boxer Angel 'The Artist' McKenzie going into the famous house!

I was ringside when Russian-born McKenzie fought Sara Davies at Derby in November on a Clifton Mitchell Promotion. Davies won the fight - while McKenzie provided the entertainment, dancing her way in to the ring and singing loudly to ‘I Kissed a Girl‘, doing her best to whip up the crowds.

Then, after fighting finished, she took the mike to address the crowd, thanking them for attending and mumbling that 'life’s too short' and 'boxing is the best thing'. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Juliette Winter vs. Zsofia Bedo

There was a good crowd at the Heritage Hotel in Derby, England on Sunday as Clifton Mitchell hosted an afternoon of boxing billed as '50/50'.

Originally an all-ladies boxing event - the usual difficulties in getting ‘match-ups’ in the UK meant that there would now be three female boxing contests and three male, hence, the 50/50 till.

Ringside supporters included Jonny Nelson, Scott Haywood and Lyndsey Scragg. Scragg has been sparring with the Derby ladies and is recently back from fighting in Canada.

First up was Cardiff's Lana Cooper as she faced local lady Sue Helmsley making her debut in pro boxing at super featherweight. More...

Boxing In France: Weekend Results

By Ricky Jones June 30th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There were two good cards in République française over the weekend and we start on Saturday's action at Salle L'Albanais in Rumilly where local man Sebastien Madani upset reigning French Light Middleweight Champion Alban Mothie over twelve rounds.

Madani followed up his WBC Mediterranean title winning effort in December with his 18th consecutive victory in front of a raging hometown crowd in this mountainous town in the French Alps, just 50 miles from Geneva, Switzerland.

Turning up in fantastic physical shape, Madani never let the champion into fight as he pressed Mothie and kept the Châtellerault man on the defensive for the entire bout despite Mothie's best efforts to reverse the tide.

After a cautious first round, the early part of the contest saw Madani force Mothie onto the backfoot behind a torrent of hooks and while the champion managed to slip most of the shots, there were a good many that found the mark.

The sixth frame saw Madani swarm over Mothie and hurt the champion, who had to draw upon his long experience to survive before backing off the challenger by round's end. More...
