Multi-weight former world champion Oscar De La Hoya is scheduled to make a major announcement today regarding his immediate future in the sport.
The 35 year old boxer has become one of the world's top promoters over the last five years and had previously said that he will not fight past 2008.
Most expect the "Golden Boy" to announce that he will face WBC Lightweight Champion Manny Paquiao on December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Paquiao has never fought above 134.5 lb in a career that began at 106 lb in 1995, while De La Hoya most recently scaled 150 lb, his lowest weight since 2001, during his bout with former IBF Super Feather Champ Steve Forbes in May.
But, De La Hoya may want a bigger challenge for his career ending bout and fighters such as Antonio Margarito, Winky Wright, Daniel Santos and Paul Williams could be possible opponents.
Rematches with Felix Trinidad or Floyd Mayweather could also take place on December 6.

Although everyone knew that last weekend's bout with Antonio Margarito would be very dangerous fight for Miguel Cotto, I was of opinion that Cotto’s boxing skills would prevail against the one-dimensional Margarito.
However, when i saw weight-in I was stunned to see how much Margarito appeared to be the bigger man. He was taller, with longer reach and with much bigger torso.
To me, they didn’t appear to be same weight class – even though on scales they both weighted same.
During the first six rounds of the fight, Cotto was outboxing Margarito through his lateral movements, some brilliant defensive moves, and with quick and sharp counterpunching.
In a second part of the fight, two factors that would cause Cotto’s loss, became obvious. Firstly, all the movements, and circle-running started to take its toll on Cotto’s energy levels.
Secondly, none of the punches that he threw on Margarito had much impact. Well, if you can’t hurt your opponent - you are still in fight – provided you have enough energy for all defensive and counter-punching moves to last you entire fight.
But, if you cannot neither hurt, nor outrun your opponent – at some point you will get caught, and that will be “it”. More...

After years of frustration, Antonio Margarito went out and took from Miguel Cotto the respect he was due. Neither De La Hoya nor Mayweather Jr. wanted to face this contender. On Saturday night, Cotto understood the reason why!
In what could probably be considered the Fight of the Year, a determined Margarito knocked out the champion in the 11th round. Early on in the fight, Cotto was able to use his speed to land some hard jabs on Margarito. However, the challenger kept on coming.
It was as if Margarito did not know anything else but to walk forward and pressure Cotto, even if it meant receiving some heavy counter punches. From the sixth round onward, Margarito had control of the match and the bout became a massacre. For the first time in his career, Cotto was receiving the same punishment that he had given to so many of his opponents.
As Miguel Cotto left the MGM Grand Garden arena and headed to the hospital, he told the Associated Press: “He's [Margarito] an excellent fighter. He did his job better than I did''.
With a record of 32 wins and 1 loss, Cotto will bounce back and look for a possible re-match against the new champion. As good as Cotto is as a boxer, he has never in his career faced such a hard hitting fighter.
Margarito’s record now stands at 37 victories with 5 losses. Now that this fight is over, it will be interesting to see his next challenger. More...

In one of the most anticipated showdowns of the year, the battle of supremacy in the welterweight division took place last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as Mexico's Antonio Margarito made the most of his WBA title challenge to reigning champion Miguel Cotto by stopping the Puerto Rican superstar in a brutal 11th round.
Cotto clearly had established himself as the far quicker of the two during the first half of the bout as he lashed out with sharp combinations that struck Margarito at will but the oncoming Mexican proved his incredible ability to take a punch as he simply strode through Cotto's fiery efforts.
By the sixth, Cotto had slowed down as a result of his foe's constant stalking and Margarito won his first round of the bout, finding range with crunching left hooks to the body and short uppercuts on the inside.
But Cotto regained the upper hand afterward, dancing away from much of Margarito's efforts and strafing the two-time former welterweight titlist with laser-like left hook counters to the head. More...

Tonight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada, Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, 32-0 (26), defends his WBA Welterweight Championship against Mexican Antonio Margarito, 36-5 (26), who voluntarily gave up the IBF title to face Cotto.
This 147 pound bout could go a long way to deciding who the premier welterweight is.
Cotto, the two weight world champion is making the fifth defence of the title he first won back back in February, 2006. Vulnerable at 140 pounds, Cotto has seemed stronger since moving up to the welterweight division and has certainly grown into the weight with ease.
Big names such Zab Judah and Shane Mosley have been the names amongst the five defences of Cotto, and the bout against Mosley last November particularly impressed me.
Never an easy opponent and also coming off an impressive win against Fernando Vargas, Mosley used all the tricks in his arsenal to try and dethrone Cotto, but the Puerto Rican, showing his trademark calmness under pressure, rode the storm, especially Mosley's body punches, on the way to a hard fought but clear enough unanimous decision verdict.
Cotto's opponent tonight, Antonio Margarito, at 30 is two years older than Cotto. For the last six years, Margarito has been perceived as the dangerman of the division.
Since winning the WBO title in 2003, Margarito made five successful defences before meeting the highly touted American Paul Williams in July of last year, losing the belt on a close unanimous decision verdict, but won the IBF crown by knocking out Kermit Cintron in six rounds this past April.
In between his successful welterweight title defences, Margarito dipped his toes into the 154 pound division, losing a technical decision to old foe Daniel Santos following a cut eye stoppage after 10 rounds in September, 2004. More...

On July 26, one of the biggest fights to grace the welterweight division will happen in Las Vegas. Be sure to circle the date and get ready to watch, along with Floyd Mayweather Jr, an amazing bout between two of the very best in the division.
Promoter Bob Arum is confident that this fight between two offensive minded boxers will be a huge draw for boxing fans worldwide. Arum even lobbied the Nevada State Athletic Commission to lower the limit on the 10 ounce gloves regulation to 8 ounce gloves.
When you factor all these equations together, this will be one of the most anticipated fights of the summer.
Now about the boxers: Miguel Cotto is coming off a massive victory against Alfonso Gomez in a five round massacre. Gomez was so badly beaten that it was necessary to stop the fight at the end of the fifth.
Cotto holds an undefeated record of 32 wins and no losses, with 26 knock outs. He is a skillful fighter with good speed and an aggressive mentality in the ring. His best asset as a fighter is his willingness to keep on coming and his willingness to get inside on boxers to get at the body.
He has always been a huge draw in the East Coast as his Puerto Rican fans flock into the venues to see his fights. Will he have a fair following in the West? Not likely and the reason why is Margarito.
Antonio Margarito knocked out his last opponent, Kermit Cintron. It took six rounds for Margarito to claim the victory against an ever diminishing Cintron. More...
