Gary Shaw Signs Boxing Prospect Archie Ray Marquez

Promoter Gary Shaw announced the signing of junior lightweight sensation Archie Ray Marquez to a long-term exclusive contract with Gary Shaw Productions. Marquez, 4-0 (4), from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was an amateur standout with a 115-15 amateur record.

“I am so happy to be part of the GSP family,” said Marquez. “My manager has been chasing Gary for a long time to get him to look at me and he finally gave me a shot on the Tarver-Dawson undercard a few weeks ago. I’m glad I passed the audition! (Marquez knocked out Sam Morales with one crushing right to the body in the fourth round on October 11.) I’m so happy knowing I’ll be active and have the opportunity to fight on TV in the future.”

“Archie has the potential to be a star with his good looks, hometown following, and fan-friendly fighting style,” said Shaw. “Archie can be a cross-over star, and I believe if he continues to work hard in the gym he will be a world champion at several weight classes. He’s only 20, and he can accomplish so much over the next 10 years.”

“Archie is a great all-around fighter who loves what he’s doing and is a marvelous student of the game,” said Sergio Chavez, who has been training Marquez for over one year at L.A. Boxing in Albuquerque. ”

You can call Archie a boxer-puncher, but he’s more than that. How many fighters with only four professional fights can claim a knockout victory with a jab or another knockout victory with a single body shot? He comes into a fight with so many different looks and weapons, there’s no way to prepare for him.

“He had a very successful amateur career but he was born with a professional style. He hits hard. He has real speed. I’ve trained Danny Romero and Johhny Tapia, and he’s showing a style and maturity way beyond his years. Heck, he just turned 20!”

“We are thrilled to be with Gary,” said Jacob Maes, Marquez’s co-manager along with Marquez’s grandfather, Archie.. “What attracted us to Gary was the family atmosphere he fosters within his company and with his other fighters. He’s straight-forward and candid and above all, a man of his word. I know we’ll make a good team.”

Marquez, who is married and the proud father of two sons, will make his GSP debut against Luis Cervantes (7-3-3, 2 KOs), from Cathedral City, Calif., November 1 on the undercard of the Cristian Mijares-Vic Darchinyan world super flyweight championship fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
