Despite an eight month hiatus from the ring following the loss of his IBF Light Heavyweight title to Antonio Tarver last year, Clinton Woods came roaring back to life last night at Hotel de France in Jersey on the Channel Islands, handling opponent Elvir Muriqi over 12 one sided rounds.
With the victory, Woods becomes the mandatory challenger for the IBF title.
The 36 year Englishman proved to be the far sharper man in the ring with Muriqi, who many thought could have the advantage in this contest due to a better showing against Tarver during a disputed majority decision loss in 2007.
The much shorter American based visitor tried to come forward against Woods but Muriqi found a wall of leather for his troubles as the Sheffield native picked off Muriqi repeatedly. More...

The domestic 154 pound weight class is really looking like it can have the potential to have some great match ups in the coming years. The talent is beaming from this division and I think it can't be ignored. As a fan of British boxing, I believe this has to be one of our strongest weight classes.
Jamie Moore, 30-3 (21), who is from Salford, looks like he's on the make or break point of his career. He looks as if he's entering the world level and he needs that push to get him out of the domestic scene. At 29 years old, Jamie offers a lot at the 154 world level and having only gone the distance twice in nearly six years shows he has power.
His most noticeable victories were over Matthew Macklin, which could have been Fight of the Year and was memorable to anybody who follows British boxing. How Moore and Macklin continued to fight at that high of a work rate was beyond me.
A former British and Commonwealth Champion, Moore also has a great victory over Sebastian Andres Lujan, who recently handed the great Jose Luis Castillo a one sided drubbing. Although 2008, in terms of opposition, has been disappointing for Moore, I believe 2009 is going to be where he really pushes his career.
Another exciting 154 pound prospect is the experienced British Champion Ryan Rhodes 40-4 (27). I believe Rhodes has found his best weight class if he wants to succeed in his remaining years. He's 31 years old, but he's coming off two great victories, against Gary Woolcombe and Jamie Coyle.
The Woolcombe fight showed that Rhodes is going to be around causing all sorts of problems for the British 154 weight class, and his age certainly doesn't show that he will have problems with the other domestic level fighters. Rhodes, like Moore, is as at the make or break part of his career and with his next fight against top ranked light middleweight Vincent Vuma, it shows that he cant afford to lose anything at this later stage of his career.
The Vuma fight is for the WBC international belt and if Rhodes can win this, it will certainly boost his WBC ratings and he may get a world title shot if he can get some good wins in 2009.
A fighter who has really impressed me over the last few years has to be Bradley Pryce, 27-6 (17). Seven straight victories after his close defeat to world ranked Mick Jennings shows that Pryce is on the warpath to fight the best at 154. More...

This evening, Bobby Rimmer informed SaddoBoxing that sadly, he and Michael Gomez have parted company. “It’s all very amicable,” Rimmer says, “and I wish Mike all the best - I really do”.
Irish-born Gomez, a two-time British Super Featherweight Champion, has been with Rimmer for 12 months and the two had struck up a good friendship. Always the character - Gomez has never been short on words. I saw him at Wigan last week when he was there to support stable-mate Jack Arnfield and Mike, as always, enjoyed a bit of banter with the media in attendance. For me - he is a ’likable rogue’.
In June of this year, Gomez was stopped in the fifth by Amir Khan when they fought for the Commonwealth Lightweight title but before being stopped, Gomez managed to ‘rattle’ the Bolton boxer. More...

Friday night at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England also saw an exciting and entertaining undercard.
Former IBO Champion Brian Magee of Belfast faced Simeon Cover of Worksop in a six round super middleweight contest. Cover, of the Ingle's stable, has the trademark ‘fencing style’, but after a steady start by both men, Cover went down on the canvas after a right to the body.
A big left punch from Magee in the opening seconds of round four sends Cover to the floor again. Getting up, Cover takes an onslaught from Magee and he almost ends up through the ropes. Seconds later, Cover falls back again and - shaking his head at his corner - is stopped by the referee.
Magee wins by TKO round four to improve to 31-3-1 (21) while Cover drops to 16-41-2 (4). More...

Newly crowned British Lightweight Champion John Murray could be making his first defence against Martin Gethin after Gethin waged a very exciting fight against Ingle Camp boxer Nadeem Siddique on the undercard of Murray vs. Lee Meager on Friday night at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England.
ʽGolden Boyʼ Siddique, is the taller switch-hitter training out of the Ingle's stable in Sheffield, while Gethin - a tough boxer - hails from Errol Johnsonsʼ gym in Wednesbury.
It proved to be an action-packed eight round lightweight contest between these two unbeaten fighters. More...

The Everton Park Sports Centre in Liverpool, England also played host to a cracking undercard on Friday night in a Matchroom Sports promoted fight night which was headlined by British Light Welterweight Champion David Barnes’s unanimous points win over Scottish boxer and former titlist Barry Morrison.
The second main fight of the evening was the eight round light welterweight contest between former European Champion 'Dangerous' Ted Bami of Brixton, London, and Stuart Elwell of Darlaston, West Midlands.
A former Commando in the Royal Marines, Elwell got off to a great start against Bami. Managing to ‘smother’ Bami’s work on the inside - the West Midlands man looks focussed in the first couple of rounds but Bami settles in around the third frame delivering a couple of good body-shots. More...

It was a noisy atmosphere last night at the Everton Park Sports Centre in Liverpool, England, where David Barnes made his first defence of the British Light Welterweight title against former champion Barry Morrison.
In a Matchroom Sports promoted fight night, Scot Barry Morrison was looking to ʽwin back the beltʼ.
ʽBarnesyʼ, fighting out of Bob Shannonʼs Gym, had a ʽnightmareʼ weigh-in on Thursday when he failed to make the weight initially, but there were no signs of problems when he came out for the first round. Looking ʽsnappyʼ - southpaw Barnes ʽwhipped-outʼ his long-reaching right punch to the face of Morrison.
ʽThe Businessʼ Morrison has the tighter-looking defence as he holds his gloves up high to practically cover his face - but Barnes still gets through. Barnes looking the more ʽpolishedʼ boxer against Morrison. More...

Yesterday at 'Touchbase' in the Premier Inn on Albert Dock in Liverpool, England, Matchroom Sports held the weigh-in for tonight's fightnight at the Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool. Headlining the 'bill' is David Barnes' defence of the British Light Welterweight title against former titleist, the Scotsman Barry Morrison.

But it was a nerve-racking time for Barnesy as he arrived late for the weigh-in and then scaled 14 ounces over the limit! Stripping off his underwear - Barnes took to the scales again to see how much he needed to lose. The second weight revealed an 11 ounce loss was needed and he had just one hour to shed the weight.

Morrison, who had weighed in 2 ounces under the target, was forced to wait it out for an hour. More...

Elcock ʽSnatchedʼ it!
It was a disappointing night for Dudley body-snatcher Darren McDermott last evening as a bad cut forced a second round stoppage against Britain's top middleweight Wayne ʽMad Dogʼ Elcock at Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England on a Hennessy Sports promotion.
Elcock, coming back from a loss to IBF Champion Arthur Abraham in December, was defending his British Middleweight title against the undefeated Dudley man.
It was a fantastic ʽrowdyʼ atmosphere that packed the ʽhallʼ and the fight got off to a good start as both men settled in. But, a clash of heads in round two caused a terrible gaping cut to the left cheek of McDermott and a small cut above - just below the brow. More...

Promoter Mick Hennessy must be suffering the worst headache right now as his ‘Battle of the Midlands’ fight-night tomorrow night sees another change of venue. Having already been re-scheduled for the SkyDome in Coventry - the event will now take place at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
Top of the bill features Birmingham Champion - “Mad Dog” Wayne Elcock, who makes his first defence of the British Middleweight Title against mandatory challenger “The Dudley Body-Snatcher” Darren McDermott.
McDermott must be thrilled that he will now be fighting virtually in his own back yard !
But, despite what must have been an ‘organisational nightmare’ for Mick Hennessy, the fight-night, in association with 1st Team Promotions and GoldenPalace, boasts a ‘Midlands Area Welterweight Contest’ and a further ten under-card bouts on what promises to be an action-packed night of boxing.
