Last night at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, NV, Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko waged a thrilling battle for the IBF bantamweight title in a bout that will unfortunately be remembered as a foul-fest.
Challenger Mares spent the first two rounds attacking the champion in an effective two-handed assault that put Agbeko back on his heels.
The scintillating performance was marred, however, by the first instances of what was to be numerous low blows from Mares that, aside from a few motions to keep the blows up, went largely un-addressed by referee Russell Mora.
Another refereeing mis-step occurred in the first frame when Agbeko hit the canvas after wheeling out of control from missing a wild hook but was counted for a knockdown. More...

Light middleweight Paul Williams posted a debatable majority decision last night over highly touted prospect Erislandy Lara last night in the main event of a big show at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
Williams was coming off a crushing second round KO in a rematch with WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez while Lara was stepping up in class after being held to a draw by upset specialist Carlos Molina.
The first frame illustrated Lara's edge in quickness and balance as the prospect had no problem landing left hands on Williams, who came forward, throwing more punches with less accuracy.
Williams used the jab more in the second, making his pressure more effective against Lara, who was still landing at a high percentage but wasn't active enough to take advantage of this.
Lara started clinching anytime Williams got in close, making for an ugly, tangled third round. Williams let loose in the fourth, throwing everything but not connecting with much while Lara began to land bracing left power hands between bouts of wrestling in the clinches.
In a change of tactics, Lara tried to fight Williams on the inside rather than clinching in the fifth and got hit with a lot of body shots and hooks for his trouble. Lara still accurate when he did throw but was outworked by a much busier opponent.
After a few unintentional head clashes, Williams was cut on the left eyelid while Lara developed an ever growing knot of swelling to his left temple. More...

Not all fights predicted to be barnburners actually live up to that billing but last night at Home Depot Center in Carson, California, WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios and challenger Urbano Antillon produced a short but thrilling war of non-stop action.
Both combatants had made their careers on forcing opponents to fight backing up and each had vowed going into last evening's clash that they would not take a backward step.
The first round saw those promises kept as Rios and Antillon continued the animosity displayed during the pre-fight media buildup, immediately going head to head and crashing in big shots from the first bell.
Antillon looked to have the faster hands but the more compact style of Rios seemed to leave the champion less open to the numerous punches that were flying all over the place.
By the midway point of the first, Rios seemed the stronger man and was landing the more telling shots, setting up the challenger with a hard jab before whipping in a rain of hurtful right hands and uppercuts that rattled Antillon. More...

Aside from some one-on-one, in-your-face jawing during a face-off for photographers, both Brandon “Bam Bam’’ Rios and Urbano Antillon were well-behaved and civil to each other during Wednesday’s final press conference for their highly anticipated world title fight this Saturday, July 9, live on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast.
Rios and Antillon had spent weeks jawing, and at one point the heated verbal exchanges nearly caused them to come to blows, but Wednesday at Wilshire Grand Los Angeles their focus solo was on Saturday when Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., defends his WBA lightweight championship against Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., in the main event on Showtime Championship Boxing. IBF light middle champ Cory Spinks returns to the ring this Saturday as the slick southpaw squares off with challenger Carlos Molina at Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas, NV on the undercard of the Joseph Agbeko vs. Yhonny Perez IBF bantam title clash.
Spinks, 37-5 (11), a former unified welterweight champion, recaptured the IBF 154 pound crown in April by winning a tough split decision against younger crosstown rival Deandre Lattimore.
At 31, Spinks may have lost a step but should still have it together enough to get past the challenge posed by Molina.
However, Molina is fresher at age 26 and has been much more active than the champion, with this being the sixth bout he's performed in since December of last year. More...
