Boxing In America: Taylor, Cintron, Grant, Martinez Victorious

By Richard Eberline November 16th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Good weekend in the states with former middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor making a comeback from a pair of Kelly Pavlik losses to outpoint ex-IBF titlist Jeff Lacy at super middle to headline a big show last night at Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium in Memphis, TN.

Taylor, 28-2-1 (17), controlled the action early but Lacy came back in the middle rounds to press his claim. Taylor found a way to regain momentum until Lacy, 24-2 (17), stepped it up late in the bout but it was too little, too late as Taylor wins a wide points decision.

Former IBF Light Welter titlist Lovemore N'dou, 46-11-1 (31), stepped up to 147 pounds to meet former IBF Welter Champ Kermit Cintron, 30-2 (27), in that organization's title eliminator and made a good accounting of himself but didn't have the stamina to outwork his taller, younger opponent, who won a UD on points.

Also on the card in Memphis was heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon, 24-1 (16), who stopped Adam Richards, 21-2 (14), in the eighth and final round of a classic two-way slugfest and super middle Alan Green, 27-1 (19), won against aging ex-light middle world champ Carl Daniels, 50-16-1 (32), who was retired by his corner in the seventh.

Also on Saturday, the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara, NY was the site of the continuing comeback of former world heavyweight title challenger Michael Grant, 45-3 (33), who won the NABA crown with a wide points decision over 41 year old Paul Marinaccio, 24-4-3 (11). More...

Boxing Perspective: The Biggest Letdowns Of 2008

By Robert Brizel October 17th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

Miguel Angel Cotto
32-0 welterweight champ Cotto backed away from Margarito when the punishment became severe.

Amir Khan
Popular but overhyped Khan’s 18-0 lightweight record fell to Breidis Prescott in only 54 seconds. Britain had to relive Jerry Quarry vs. Jack Bodell all over again.

Marcos Ramirez
Ramirez blew a 25-0 record against Yuriorkis Gamboa and was knocked down twice in the second round and appeared to have been ‘quick counted’ out at nine by the Germans.

Andrey Tsurkan
Tsurkan could not get out of the twelfth round in his light middleweight ‘step up’ bout against unbeaten Alfredo Angulo and took a good pasting along the way.

First Arslan
Beaten in his native Germany, Arslan lost his WBA Cruiserweight title to veteran Guillermo Jones, getting stopped in the tenth round. More...

Boxing Result: Berto Wins WBC Welter Crown In Memphis

By Richard Eberline June 22nd, 2008 All Boxing Results

Just three years and a half years since turning professional, Florida welterweight Andre Berto won the prestigious WBC title belt last night at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN but thoroughly outclassing opponent Miguel Angel Rodriguez on the way to banging out a seventh round TKO.

From the first bell, the 24 year old Berto peppered his 29 year old rival from Naucalpan, Mexico with a blazingly fast two-handed attack that Rodriguez had few answers for.

Berto forced the taller Rodriguez to fight on the inside and masterfully mixed uppercuts at short range coupled with spearing body shots before dropping back to fire off stunning lead right crosses and left hooks that rarely seemed to miss.

Rodriguez was rocked as early as the second round but the gritty Mexican never stopped trying until he was leveled by a Berto uppercut in the seventh.

It all came to an end for Rodriguez at 2:13 of the frame as he was canvassed again, prompting referee Laurence Cole to step in and call a halt to the action. More...

What better stage to highlight a New York rivalry than a live HBO telecast from Madison Square Garden? Dmitriy Salita, 28-0-1 (16), hopes to take his first step towards the boxing elite by facing cross town rival Edgar Santana, 24-5 (15), on the undercard of DiBella Entertainment’s Boxing After Dark on June 21.

“I received a call a few days ago about fighting Santana,” Salita told SaddoBoxing. “The offer was good and I accepted the fight; I really hope this fight happens for New York City and for the fans.”

According to Salita, his fight is being considered as part of a potential triple-header telecast headlined by Andre Berto, who will face Miguel Angel Rodriguez, and a heavyweight co-feature of Chazz Witherspoon against Chris Arreola. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Peter Quillin Vs. Antwun Echols

By Jim Everett April 18th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

Jed Weinstein Presents hosted the fourth annual Box-NYC charity event at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. The star studded night was highlighted with live boxing televised on ESPN’s Wednesday Night Fights, fine-dining, a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament, model and celebrity appearances as well as live and silent auctions. Over the past three years Jed Weinstein has donated $100,000 to The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation through Box-NYC.

Local favorite Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin improved to 18-0 (14) by getting the best of veteran Antwun Echols 31-8-4 (27) over ten rounds. Quillin dropped Echols in the first round and dominated the fight which could have been stopped at anytime during the last three or four rounds.

The domination of Echols and the fact that he is 0-3-3 in his last six fights not winning since 2004 will hopefully indicate to him that it may be time to retire. During the last few rounds of the fight Echols bravely showed his fighter’s spirit by refusing to go down after being on the receiving end of many unnecessary blows, but it was clear that he was out on his feet.
