Former Heavyweight Boxing Champ Ruiz Calls Out Arreola

By Boxing Press July 1st, 2009 All Press Releases

It didn’t take two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) very long to respond to comments made by unbeaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola and his promoter, Dan Goossen, at a press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Arreola was quoted as saying, “There are a lot of old guys and former champs sitting around there that we need to take care of. Their time is up. They need to go.” More...

Exclusive Boxing Interview: Mark “The Dominator” De Mori

By Jim Everett June 17th, 2009 All Boxing Interviews

© Mark De Mori

The heavyweights were once the glamour division of boxing but in recent years has come under harsh criticism for lack of talent, excitement and a true unified champion. Eastern European heavyweights currently dominate the division and the U.S. are pushing their best candidates forward with Eddie Chambers and Chris Arreola hoping they can get a piece of the alphabet titles.

The heavyweight division is in desperate need of new talent, a young fighter that can come up the ranks and be entertaining to watch. Enter Mark “The Dominator” De Mori from Perth , Australia . He’s a 27 years old orthodox fighter, 6’2”, 233 lbs and at first glance looks more like a body builder than a boxer, but don’t let his muscles fool you because in addition to his dominating right he can box well and is able to get very low as he bobs and weaves his way forward.

Admittedly De Mori was a one dimensional fighter early in the pro ranks, dominating his opponents most by knockout, but after suffering a knockout loss he took some time off to become a more complete fighter. The time off and on the job training has worked well for “The Dominator” as he improved his record to 15-1-2 (13).

SaddoBoxing had the privilege to get an exclusive interview with De Mori to get a closer look at this up and coming heavyweight. More...

Boxing In America: Weekend Results

By Richard Eberline November 30th, 2008 All Boxing Results

WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams stepped up to light middle and caged the vacant WBO belt by stopping former three time 154 pound world titlist Verno Phillips in the eighth round at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, CA in the highest profile bout in America this weekend.

Williams overcame a bad cut from a headclash early on and used his massive height and reach advantage to good effect, keeping the much older Phillips at bay with hard shots to the body and head.

It was the constant body shots which seemed to take their toll on the former champion as he began to slow down later in the bout but Phillips also didn't have the power to trouble his far taller opponent despite not having much difficulty in hitting Williams when he did throw punches.

By the eighth round, Phillips was getting hurt and the bout was called to a halt before the ninth frame could begin to keep the 39 year old from further damage.

Williams wins the WBO Light Middle title, improving to 36-1 (27), while Phillips drops to 42-11-1 (21) after a brave performance in what could be the last big fight of his long career. More...

Boxing Result: Williams, Arreola Stop Foes At Soboba Casino

By Richard Eberline September 26th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There were fireworks on tap last night at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA as WBO Welter Champ Paul Williams, 35-1 (26), made short work of Andy Kolle, 17-2 (12), stopping the Minnesota native in the first round of a non-title bout fought at middleweight.

Despite being a natural middleweight, Kolle was ill-prepared to deal with the power of Williams and was floored by a single shot within a very short time after the contest started.

Heavyweight Chris Arreola, 25-0 (22), needed only three rounds to achieve the same result against opponent Israel Carlos Garcia, 19-2 (11). 38 year old Garcia had never faced the level of competition that Arreola presented and was unable to keep the Californian off, resulting in the early stoppage.

Boxing Preview: Paul Williams, Chris Arreola In Action Tonight In California

By Richard Eberline September 25th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA, WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams keeps busy in a scheduled ten round non-title battle of the southpaws against middleweight Andy Kolle and undefeated heavyweight hopeful Chris Arreola looks to stay on track for a title shot by meeting Israel Carlos Garcia, also over ten rounds.

Williams, 34-1 (25), of Augusta, GA, was carefully groomed for seven years leading up to his WBO title shot against reigning champion Antonio Margarito last July and "The Punisher" didn't disappoint, posting a tough UD over the battle hardened Mexican to annex the belt.

But it all went pear-shaped in a first defense against Carlos Quintana in February as Williams lost by points to the power-punching Puerto Rican challenger. The lanky Georgian got his revenge however, destroying Quintana in a single round just four months later to regain the WBO crown.

Facing Williams tonight at the Soboba Casino is 26 year old Minnesota based middleweight prospect Andy Kolle, 17-1 (12), who's only loss came in 2006 when fighting current WBO NABO Super Middle titlist Andre Ward.

Despite jumping up two weight classes for this evening's bout, the towering Williams is stiller taller than his opponent and it should be interesting to see if the naturally heavier Kolle can parlay that advantage to offset Williams' sizable edge in talent.

Coming off a third round DQ win over previously undefeated prospect Chazz Witherspoon, machine of destruction Chris Arreola, 24-0 (21), meets 38 year old Israel Carlos "King Kong" Garcia, 19-1 (11), in what may be one of Arreola's final preparatory bouts before challenging for a major belt. By Boxing Press July 3rd, 2008 All Press Releases

Boxing Result: Berto Wins WBC Welter Crown In Memphis

By Richard Eberline June 22nd, 2008 All Boxing Results

Just three years and a half years since turning professional, Florida welterweight Andre Berto won the prestigious WBC title belt last night at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN but thoroughly outclassing opponent Miguel Angel Rodriguez on the way to banging out a seventh round TKO.

From the first bell, the 24 year old Berto peppered his 29 year old rival from Naucalpan, Mexico with a blazingly fast two-handed attack that Rodriguez had few answers for.

Berto forced the taller Rodriguez to fight on the inside and masterfully mixed uppercuts at short range coupled with spearing body shots before dropping back to fire off stunning lead right crosses and left hooks that rarely seemed to miss.

Rodriguez was rocked as early as the second round but the gritty Mexican never stopped trying until he was leveled by a Berto uppercut in the seventh.

It all came to an end for Rodriguez at 2:13 of the frame as he was canvassed again, prompting referee Laurence Cole to step in and call a halt to the action. More...

With an 11 fight knockout streak dating back to 2005, Chris Arreola has truly been a “Nightmare” for opponents.
