‘Clinton Woods’

IBF light welter champ Juan Urango retained his belt while light heavy contender Tarvoris Cloud outpointed former champ Clinton Woods to capture the vacant IBF belt last night at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL.
After a slow start, southpaw Urango, 22-2-1 (17), got down to business after getting nailed by a full-blooded right hand from challenger and former WBO titlist Randall Bailey, 39-7 (35), the biggest puncher in the division, in the sixth frame.
Urango was floored heavily but beat the count and went straight after Bailey for the remainder of the bout.
The champion burrowed his way into close quarters and went to work, absorbing some of Bailey's heavy artillery on the way in, until he hit the bulls eye in the ninth, downing the challenger with a sharp counter left.
Bailey regained his feet but was canvassed again during Urango's follow up assault. Bailey beat the count again but by the 11th, all Urango's tenderizing earlier came into force as the challenger was finished off by a body shot at 1:51 of the round. More...

Big show tonight at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL with two IBF belts up for grabs.
Colombian hard man Juan Urango, 21-2-1 (16), makes the first defense of his second reign as IBF light welter ruler when he takes on big punching veteran Randall Bailey, 39-6 (35).
It's hard to believe that Bailey is only 34 as he's been around a long, long time and this will be his fourth attempt to gain back a world title after losing the WBO 140 pound strap to Ener Julio in 2000.
Bailey is going in there to do one thing and one thing only, KO the opponent, but he'll be hard pressed to produce that result against probably the strongest light welter in the world, Juan Urango.
Urango is coming off a points loss to WBC welter titlist Andre Berto after testing the 147 pound waters in May and "Iron Twin" will have to make sure he gets to Bailey first if he wants to walk out of the Hard Rock still a world champ. More...

Despite an eight month hiatus from the ring following the loss of his IBF Light Heavyweight title to Antonio Tarver last year, Clinton Woods came roaring back to life last night at Hotel de France in Jersey on the Channel Islands, handling opponent Elvir Muriqi over 12 one sided rounds.
With the victory, Woods becomes the mandatory challenger for the IBF title.
The 36 year Englishman proved to be the far sharper man in the ring with Muriqi, who many thought could have the advantage in this contest due to a better showing against Tarver during a disputed majority decision loss in 2007.
The much shorter American based visitor tried to come forward against Woods but Muriqi found a wall of leather for his troubles as the Sheffield native picked off Muriqi repeatedly. More...

Dennis Hobson puts on a boxing bill tonight in Jersey on the Channel Islands, a British Crown Dependency 14 miles off the coast of northern France. Headlining is former IBF Light Heavyweight Champion Clinton Woods, who meets America's Elvir Muriqi in a 12 rounder.
36 year old Woods, 41-4-1 (24), of Sheffield, England is coming off a disappointing loss to IBO titlist Antonio Tarver in Florida ten months ago and for the ex-European titlist, this is a must win bout if he is to once again fight for world honors.
Muriqi, 35-4 (22), a Kosovo native now residing in New York, is coming off a KO win of Jameel Wilson a year ago but the stocky 29 year old produced a far better performance against Tarver than Woods, pushing the veteran hard before losing a very close and controversial majority decision in 2007.
Both combatants will have to shake off the ring rust due to inactivity but it should be a good contest as the willful Muriqi will undoubtedly come forward and tangle with the taller and more skilled Woods in a bout that should go the distance.
It's a crossroads battle to be sure with the winner going onto a likely world title bid while the loser will be back at square one.

After turning back most of his top level competition at super middleweight, longtime WBO Champion Joe Calzaghe left behind the 168 pound division in a much anticipated move to light heavyweight and has summarily dismissed legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones in 2008.
Standing now at 46-0 (32), the soon to be 37 year old "Welsh Wizard" is looking at a few remaining bouts before hanging up the gloves for good in the near future, possibly after making a run at Rocky Marciano's amazing 49-0 career mark.
But who should Calzaghe face in his next outing?
The top young gun in the division is undoubtedly the undefeated 26 year old southpaw Chad Dawson, but the IBF/IBO titlist is slated to meet Antonio Tarver in a rematch in March and won't be ready to step back in the ring again, assuming he gets past Tarver again, until September or October.
That could be too long for Calzaghe, who was last in action against Jones in November.
If Calzaghe continues his trend of fighting older foes, there's always Glen Johnson, the 40 year old ex-IBF titlist, but it wouldn't likely generate the kind of money that "Super Joe" is seeking in one of his final bouts. More...

On 7 November, 2002, Clinton Woods was to have his first taste of the water from across the other side of the pond. It wasnʼt good. Dismantled in six rounds by the great Roy Jones Jr, it took the Sheffield man almost six years to go back again. The water was no nicer.
After 12 rounds of uninspiring boxing last weekend from Woods, a unanimous decision loss to Antonio Tarver crushed any hope of a British super fight with Joe Calzaghe this autumn. Woods will be left with a feeling of missed opportunity and wondering if father time has finally got his number at 35 years old.
I had previously said that ʽTarver is a slick southpaw who has more natural talent and should comfortably outbox woods on the night to a 12 round decision.ʼ This was the opinion of many, however with Tarver's lacklustre recent bouts, the bookies and many people couldnʼt split the pair.
Despite Tarver visibly gasping for breath in between the later rounds, it was Woods who found age the defeating factor as he was unable to get into any sort of rhythm and had very little work rate. Some things just donʼt do what they used to do anymore; it appeared that way last weekend for Woods, and to some extent, Tarver.
Where to go after such a defeat?
No chance of a rematch with Tarver, who will use his remaining two or three fights to make as much money as possible. No chance of the super fight with Calzaghe, even if Joe loses to Bernard Hopkins, unless Calzaghe's performance mirrors that of Wood's last night. More...

On Saturday night, Sheffield Boxer Clinton Woods, put his IBF Light Heavyweight title at risk against ‘Magic Man’ Antonio Tarver in Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately for Woods, Tarver was indeed ‘Magic’ and Woods - having struggled to settle in to the fight from the first bell - lost his title after 12 rounds of passion-less boxing.
The slow start to the contest continued throughout. Woods realised that Tarver did not like the body-shots, so he tries to concentrate on them but the action was lacking. In the closing seconds of round three, the travelling British fans cheered as Woods strikes a straight left to the face of Tarver, who tilts off balance.
A couple of left jabs rock back the head of Woods mid-way through round four and, finding it difficult to settle in, he switches from southpaw to orthodox.
Throughout the fight, Tarver used a variety of shots but his most notable was the uppercut. More...

A week before the big Calzaghe vs. Hopkins light heavyweight showdown, Sheffield's Clinton Woods defends his IBF title against Antonio Tarver in Tampa, Florida.
For Woods, this is his well deserved spot in the big league, topping an American bill as champion. A pro since 1994, Woods has won titles at domestic, Commonwealth and European level at super middleweight and light heavyweight.
In his first tilt at world honours, Woods had the misfortune to run into Undisputed World Light Heavyweight Champion Roy Jones Jr, then at the peak of his powers, losing in six rounds in September 2002. After a draw and a points loss verdict to veteran Glencoffe Johnson, Woods finally made it fourth time lucky, stopping American Rico Hoye in five in March 2005, wining the vacant IBF title. More...

Some fighters like to tell the world of their ring prowess and professional achievements, while others prefer to stay quiet and carefully build their reputation with solid performances. This weekendʼs IBF/IBO Light Heavyweight unification clash in Tampa, Florida features two boxers who perfectly epitomise those two very different moulds of men.
Sheffieldʼs IBF champion Clinton Woods is the quiet, unassuming type who would rather holiday in his caravan in Skegness than lavish himself with the finer things in life. He is the type of champion that is respectful and only shows his more frightful side in the ring.
Antonio "Iʼm prettier than a girl" Tarver is Woodʼs exact antithesis. Bold, brass and mouthy, listening to Tarver speak, you could easily be fooled into thinking that this man was the greatest to ever don trunks and gloves.
"If anyone has any doubt whoʼs the best light heavyweight, I will show them once again on Saturday nigh," Tarver said at this week's press conference. "I am delighted that Woods is here and sounds ready to fight, but like so many that fought me before him, his dreams and hopes will be dashed. There is only one true light heavyweight champion and thatʼs me." More...
