In a battle of former Mexican champions, Jesus Jimenez captured the WBC Latino Flyweight title by stopping Salvador Montes in four rounds last night at Foro Scotiabank in Mexico City.
The combatants were no strangers in the ring as Guadalajara southpaw Jimenez had knocked out Tepic native Montes twice before but the stakes were never as high as last night.
The much shorter Montes tried to land a big shot from the opening bell but was punished for his efforts with a scathing body attack from Jimenez, who never took his foot off the gas.
By the fourth, the big-hearted Montes was getting hammered from all directions, forcing a referee stoppage at 2:42 of the round.
Jimenez, 21-5 (14), has now won ten straight since suffering a stoppage at the hands of Francisco Arce in 2006 and at just 24 years of age, the Jalisco based slugger could be in line for high profile bouts against the like of Cristian Mijares, Luis Maldonado or perhaps a rematch with Arce.
Montes loses his third in a row to fall to 5-6 (2).

Confounding the predictions of the vast majority of media experts, Australia's Vic Darchinyan dominated sharp boxing Cristian Mijares before knocking out the southpaw stylist in the ninth round to add the WBC and WBA titles to his own IBF belt at super flyweight.
After having seen off dangerous fellow Mexican Jorge Arce with ease last year, Mijares was expected to avoid the winging shots of the Aussie bomber, who was stopped by Nonito Donaire 15 months ago but that's not what transpired in this battle of southpaws.
Darchinyan's normally wide punching style was replaced with a tightly controlled manner but the native born Armenian still punched with authority and Mijares was floored in the first from an uppercut.
The Gomez Palacio man beat the count but was surprisingly outboxed over the balance of the fight, caught repeatedly with the left hand of Darchinyan.
Mijares did have some success catching Darchinyan on the way in, but "The Raging Bull" simply walked through the efforts of Mijares and imposed his will upon the WBC/WBA Champion, pounding away until Mijares was felled for good by a perfect left cross and the bout was stopped at the end of the ninth. Both WBA and WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares and IBF 115-pound kingpin Vic Darchinyan will look to add to their belt collection when they square off in a highly anticipated world title unification fight in the main event this Saturday, Nov. 1, live on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast.
So who is going to triumph? The experts think Mijares is too skilled a boxer to let the power-punching Darchinyan beat him. Of the 32 boxing media members who participated in a Showtime Prediction Poll, 26 picked Mijares and six liked Darchinyan.
Here’s how they see the Mijares-Darchinyan world title unification fight
Daxx Kahn, Saddoboxing.com ((Mijares): “In his bout with Nonito Donaire, Darchinyan was exposed on his ability to deal with a clever boxer that has solid whiskers. While Mijares is not a big puncher, he has a solid chin and counters well. Look for Mijares to fight smart and land counter punches, using Darchinyan's jerky style to his advantage. Mijares wins a unanimous decision.” More...

There was a big show at The Arena in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon last night with WBC/WBA Super Flyweight Champion Cristian Mijares retaining his belts against challenger Chatchai Sasakul in dominating fashion.
26 year old southpaw Mijares, 36-3-2 (15), who hasn't lost a bout since July, 2002 and held a twelve year advantage in youth against Sasakul, 64-4 (39), beat his Thai opponent to the punch throughout the first two rounds.
By the third frame, the 38 year old ex-WBC Flyweight titlist was getting banged around badly and was stopped at 1:05 of the round after going to the canvas for the second time.
Sasakul had gone 31-1 since losing the WBC Flyweight title to Manny Pacquiao in 1998.
In other bouts on the card, big punching Mexican Middleweight Champ Ruben "Cloroformo" Padilla, 16-2-1 (15), stopped Nicaragua's Wilmer Gonzalez, 16-8-1 (10), in the eleventh of a scheduled twelve round non-title contest.
Undefeated flyweight Koki Kameda, 19-0 (12), posted a twelve round unanimous decision over Salvador Montes, 5-5 (2), to annex the vacant WBA Intercontinental title while former WBC Female Super Flyweight Champ Ana Marie Torres, 16-3-2 (10), came closer to regaining her title by winning the WBC Interim crown against Esmeralda Moreno, 9-4 (3), by ten round UD.

There were two very big boxing bills last night south of the border with shows in Gomez Palacio and Auguascalientes.

On the undercard, Flyweight Julio Cesar Miranda, 26-3-1 (19), put the first loss on the resume of prospect Omar Salado, 19-1-2 (11), after producing a fifth round stoppage.
