Boxing In Argentina: Maidana, Barrios, Matthysse Victorious

By Alejandro Tostado November 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

It was a big Saturday night in The Land of Silver with two good fight cards, one of which featured a world title bout.

That took place at Club Deportivo Libertad in Sunchales as one of the top light welters on the planet, Marcos Rene Maidana, was on his trademark brutal form.

The 26 year old retained his Interim WBA crown with a crushing rub-out of experienced Panamanian William Gonzalez, 22-6-1 (7), at 2:20 of the third round.

Maidana improves to 27-1 (26) and could meet the winner of the upcoming Amir Khan vs. Dmitriy Salita WBA title clash next month.

There was another devastating KO on the undercard as big punching lightweight Daniel Alberto Dorrego, 28-2 (20), gunned down previously undefeated Daniel Eduardo Brizuela, 17-1-1 (6), in the very first round. More...

Boxing In Argentina: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado September 21st, 2008 All Boxing Results

The biggest card this weekend in the Land of Silver took place last night at the Nuevo Palacio Aurinegro in Puerto Madryn where southpaw Omar Andres Narvaez continued his mastery of the WBO Flyweight title, outboxing WBC Cabofe titlist Alejandro Hernandez over twelve rounds of action.

"El Huracan" put impressive skills on display and introduced the 22 year old Mexican visitor to the style of fighting that has won Narvaez an amazing fourteen consecutive defenses since winning the WBO gem against Adonis Rivas over six years ago.

The 33 year old Narvaez improves to 28-02 (17), and has equaled the Argentine world record defense mark of all-time great middleweight Carlos Monzon, cementing his status as a national hero.

Hernandez loses for only the second time since 2005 and drops to 20-6-1 (9).

Also on the card was super bantam veteran Jose Pedro Ramon Saez, 16-7-2 (8), who had to climb off the canvas twice in a war with previously undefeated prospect Mauricio Javier "Chucky" Munoz, 15-1 (8), who was also floored, before he could pull out an upset unanimous decision win and take the vacant interim WBO Latino belt. Boxing In Latin America: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado August 3rd, 2008 All Boxing Results

There was a lot of action this weekend below the Rio Grande and we kick off the proceedings with the return of former WBC Super Bantam Champion Oscar Larios, 62-6-1 (39), who rocked the house on Saturday with a seventh round KO of Nicaragua's Marlon Aguilar to retain the Interim WBC Featherweight crown at Auditorio Benito Juarez in the Guadalajara suburb of Zapopan, Mexico.

On the undercard, 18 year old welterweight Saul Alvarez, 20-1-1 (15), posted a unanimous decision over Argentine visitor Carlos Adan Jerez, 27-10-3 (14), for the WBA Fedecentro title although neither combatant made the welterweight limit at the weigh-in.

At Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana, local hero Julio Cesar Felix, 9-0 (3), stayed on track with a ten round unanimous decision against Nicaraguan flyweight Milton Marin, 5-3-1 (1), to win the WBC World Youth Minimumweight title.

Also on the bill, Ensenada slugger Oscar Gonzales, 5-0 (4), crushed more experienced Nicaraguan opponent Michael Isaac Carrera, 8-2-1 (4), in the second round with a well-timed body shot.

Across the Caribbean, hard punching Nicaraguan Juan "El Exterminador" Palacios, 24-2 (19), enjoyed better fortune than his countrymen had experienced in Mexico as he won his 13th consecutive bout by KO'ing local man Omar Soto, 13-3-1 (6), in the tenth round to cage the Interim WBC Minimumweight title at Auditorio Juan Pachin Vicens in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Heading into Argentina, the drive of Daniel Alberto Dorrego, 23-1 (15), to face fellow countryman and top lightweight in South America, Aldo Rios, hit a snag as "Metralleta" was held to a second round no decision by crosstown southpaw rival Sergio Eduardo "El Tigre" Gonzalez, 22-11-4 (9), at Gimnasio Municipal in Buenos Aires.
