By Jane Warburton July 21st, 2009 All Ringside Boxing

Saturday night at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, Hennessy Sports promoted a fight night headlined by the British Light Heavyweight title clash between Commonwealth Champion Nathan Cleverly and English Champion Danny McIntosh.

Cleverly of Cefn Forest, Wales, enters the ring first, clearly enjoying the atmosphere of the York Hall.

Confident McIntosh jumps over the top rope and in to the ring, striding over to Cleverly before being stopped by referee Howard Foster.

Obviously very ‘fired-up’, McIntosh goads "Clev" from his corner position until trainer Brendan Ingle steps in front of him to keep him back. More...

Boxing In Britain: Clevery Stops McIntosh For British Title

By Ricky Jones July 19th, 2009 All Boxing Results

A big light heavyweight showdown took place tonight at London's York Hall with Nathan Cleverly emerging as the new British champion after defeating Danny McIntosh.

Already the Commonwealth titlist, Cleverly had one last obstacle to clear in the form of English belt holder McIntosh in order to begin the long climb to the world stage.

And clear it he did, but not without an argument from the Norwich based brawler.

Cleverly immediately looked the classier fighter once the bell rang as he was quicker than McIntosh and took advantage of the almost non existent defense of his rival. More...

Boxing Preview: Nathan Cleverly vs. Danny McIntosh

By Ricky Jones July 18th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Former IBF champion Clinton Woods still sits atop the light heavyweight division in the UK but two up and coming young guns clash tonight at historic York Hall in London for the vacant British belt and the Commonwealth crown as well.

Welshman Nathan Cleverly, 16-0 (6), has been hailed as the "next Joe Calzaghe" due to his prowess in the ring and at just 22 years of age, could be the face of the future in the British Isles.

Standing nearly 6'4, Cleverly has surprising quickness to go along with the very long reach and since defeating the very experienced Tony Oakey for the Commonwealth title last October has defended the belt with three straight stoppages.

All of this could be bad news for English titlist Danny McIntosh, 10-0 (4), but the 29 year old from Norwich hasn't been the least bit impressed with Cleverly during the media build up to this greatly anticipated contest. More...

Boxing Result: Jon Thaxton Loses European Title In Norwich

By Jane Warburton March 1st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich, England, Hennessy Sports promoted a fight night which was headlined by Jonathan Thaxton's defence of the European Lightweight title against Anthony Mezaache of France.

The fight starts but with 40 seconds of the first round remaining, Thaxton landed a right hook which seemed to land in slow-motion to the side of the Frenchman's head behind the ear and he falls slowly to the canvas.

He gets up for the count but his legs are like jelly! As Thaxton approaches, Mezaache then spits out the gumshield, walking unsteadily to his corner to retrieve it.

The referee deducts a point from the Frenchman and fighting continues, with Mezaache obviously well recovered from the knockdown. It’s a good round three from Mezaache but he’s untidy in round four and his mouth is gaping. Thaxton has a little nick under the left eye.

Thaxton seems to be missing a lot and is getting caught. A big right uppercut from Mezaache in the fifth causes Thaxton's knees to dip, but he didn’t touch the canvas. More...

Boxing In Britain: Weekend Results

By Ricky Jones March 1st, 2009 All Boxing Results

There was a good card at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England last night that saw a big upset on the domestic heavyweight scene along with a Commonwealth title fight, an English title scrap and the professional debut of three Olympic boxers.

At the rather advanced age of 42 years, Bedford brawler Matt Skelton, 22-3 (19), had risen through the ranks to stand atop the heavyweight division in England and came into his Commonwealth title defense with Belfast's Martin Rogan, 12-0 (6), on the strength of a European title winning effort against Italy's Paolo Vidoz in December.

Rogan, no spring chicken himself at 37, came into his bout with Skelton as the far less experienced man and despite a good 2008 that saw him win the heavyweight "Prizefighter" tournament and narrowly outpoint Audley Harrison, was not expected to defeat Skelton.

But the Irishman proved to not only be able to take the punishment and bullying of Skelton but had the ability to give it back like no one else at domestic level has done so to date. More...
