Friday night at the Bolton Arena in Bolton, England, Frank Maloney promoted a fight night headlined by three title bouts, billed as ‘War of the Roses’.
Salford boxer Jamie Moore faced Ryan Rhodes of Sheffield for the European light middleweight title, St.Helens boxer Gary Davies made the first defence of his British bantamweight title against Londoner Ian Napa and Stoke‘s Chris Edwards made his second defence of the British flyweight title against Mongolian-born Shinny Bayaar.
Jamie Moore (Salford) v Ryan Rhodes (Sheffield)
12 x 3 European Light Middleweight Title
Reigning European champion Moore starts off busy from the first bell, keeping former two-time British light middleweight champion Rhodes on the back foot. Rhodes - having the shorter reach - just misses his target a few times with sweeping shots.
Moore dominates from centre of ring, while Rhodes struggles to settle in to this first round. The Sheffield man goes for the body of ‘Mooresy’ but Moore looks determined, ploughing through with more punches - landing a hard shot which rocks Rhodes’ head from side to side. More...

It was the rare domestic bout with far reaching and possibly world level implications last night at Bolton Arena in Bolton, England and the European light middle title clash between champion Jamie Moore and Ryan Rhodes lived up to all expectations.
Southpaw Moore took the initiative in the early going, advancing on his older opponent and scoring with single shots that caught the normally fleet-footed switch-hitter.
Rhodes handled the pressure and punches well as he began to get the timing of Moore's efforts and answer back with return fire.
As the first few rounds began to develop into the middle frames, the action began to heat up with both men enjoying success but Moore continued to control the action, adding energy sapping body shots to his mix of offense. More...

On Friday night, at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, England, Jason ‘2Smooth’ Booth made his second defence of the British super bantamweight title, which he won in April this year. The event - promoted by Frank Maloney - featured 12 contests.
Jason Booth (Nottingham) v Michael Hunter (Hartlepool)
12 x 3 British Super Bantamweight Title
Hunter takes centre of ring straight away keeping Booth edging around the perimeter, but Booth gets through the middle of Hunter's high guard within seconds.
Hunter tries for the body but Booth lets loose a decent left hook which lands to Hunter's right cheek. Hunter gets busy at the end of the round with uppercuts and hooks to the head. A good right lands but many are hitting the gloves and arms of Booth. More...

British super bantamweight champion Jason Booth put together yet another sterling performance in turning back the comeback hopes of Michael Hunter last night at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, England on a Frank Maloney promotion.
31 year old southpaw Hunter was attempting to recapture the glory days of 2004-2006, over which he held the British, Commonwealth and European titles before losing a vacant IBF title bid to sharp Canadian Steve Molitor.
The Hartlepool man started strong once the bell rang, pressuring Nottingham based Booth, also 31, with a high work rate and had some success when the champion was put upon the ropes. More...

Hayemaker Boxing put on a great ‘all-action’ bill last night at the smart Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.
Billed as ‘Mersey Beatdown’ - the fight night was headlined by the vacant British Super Middleweight title clash between Liverpudlians Tony Quigley and Tony Dodson.
Dodson was scheduled to fight Brian Magee, who had to pull out with a back injury although he was ringside for the fight.
Quigley entered the ring to the sounds of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ as the Liverpool fans stood with arms held high - swaying and singing to the song made famous by Liverpool's own Gerry and the Pacemaker’. More...

Despite the disappointment of Team Great Britain's Khalid Yafai’s defeat yesterday at the hands of Cuba's flyweight Andris Lafitta by a score of 9-3, James DeGale put in a great effort as he faced US ‘favourite’ Shawn Estrada in the second round of the Middleweight division.
Neither man scored in the first frame, but DeGale went up 3-1 against the American in round two. A bit of a messy contest with the two men looking clumsy.
DeGale improves to 3 up over Estrada as the third finishes at 6-3, then relaxes in the second half of the fourth and final round, affording himself a bit of ‘showboating’. DeGale wins 11-5 and secures his place in the quarter-finals.
Afterward, DeGale said “I didn’t box my best again...it was nerve-racking in there” but added that he “can’t wait for Wednesday”.
DeGale now faces tough Kazakhstani opponent -Bakhtiyar Artayev, who was third at the World Championships in Chicago last year. DeGale has fought Artayev twice before - winning against him in Sheffield recently.
DeGale is the third Brit to make it to the quarter-finals after team-mates David Price at super heavyweight and Tony Jeffries at light heavyweight were also successful.

Yesterday, Captain of the British boxing squad, David Price, caused the shock of the competition so far by stopping Russian favourite Islam Timurziev in the second frame of their first round super heavyweight contest.
Prior to the fight, Price - the eldest of the team - said how ʼhonouredʼ he was to have been chosen as Captain by the other team members and although he was ʽconfident of his own abilitiesʼ - knew that he was up against the man rated as ʽnumber one in the worldʼ.
As he entered the ring at the Workers Stadium, Beijing, the six feet eight inch Liverpudlian stepped over the top rope and into the ring!
After a steady round one, Timurziev was ahead by 2-0, but with a couple of shots from Price going un-scored.
But a right from Price in the opening seconds of the second frame forces an 8 count after the Russian goes to one knee. Moments later, Timurziev drops to his knee again after a left shot through the middle from Price.
Again, the referee administers the 8 count, but as he gets to 8, the Russian doesnʼt look to be focussed and the referee calls off the contest to the disbelief of the ʽfavouriteʼ.
David Price is jubilant, having beaten the man expected to win Gold in Beijing.
Today, Billy Joe Saunders and Bradley Saunders have their second round contests with light heavyweight Tony Jeffries fighting for the first time in this competition.

Despite the disappointment that Olympic Medal contender and current world lightweight champion Frankie Gavin was sent home for being three pounds overweight in Beijing, the remaining ‘Boxing Brits’ have gotten off to great start.
The first to box was middleweight James DeGale. The 22 year old DeGale had declared that ‘a medal would be lovely’ but that this was ‘all preparation for 2012’.
DeGale faced Egyptian Mohamed Hikal and after a tough start- losing the first round 3-2 to his opponent - DeGale settled in and dominated the second round to score 5-3 at the half-way point.
Gaining in confidence, DeGale looked to be enjoying the second half of the contest as he relaxed into the fight, finally winning by 13-4 after four rounds.
DeGale is now scheduled to fight American boxer Shawn Estrada.

As British hopefuls prepare for the boxing in Beijing this weekend, today it seems that ʼfavouriteʼ Frankie Gavin is struggling to make the lightweight limit and may not get his olympic-shot at a medal. The Birmingham man has 106 wins to his name out of 127 bouts and was considered a leading candidate for a Gold Medal in Beijing.
Other medal contenders include Joe Murray - brother of John Murray, the recently crowned British Lightweight Champion. Joe - a tall boxer for a bantamweight, has plenty of experience but knows this will be a tough test for him.
Khalid Saeed Yafai, another Birmingham man, appears confident at ʽFlyweightʼ. Stockton-on-Tees boxer Bradley Saunders knows the competition is high in his weight division, but with 146 bouts under his belt - the light welterweight remains calm and focussed.
Youngest of the bunch - Billy Joe Saunders - has bags of confidence. Seeking perfection, this young welterweight will have his sights set on a Gold.
Middleweight James DeGale is looking to prove himself to the UK audience. Tony Jeffries of Sunderland is the light heavyweight contender and David Price of Liverpool, the eldest of the eight Olympic contenders, fights at super heavyweight.
The opening ceremony was last night and the boxing begins today.
