Al Bernstein On Boxing: Perception vs. Reality

By Al Bernstein May 26th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

SaddoBoxing has the honor of introducing Al Bernstein and his new exclusive column, "Al Bernstein On Boxing"!

Al is unquestionably the top television analyst in the sport today, appearing on Showtime since 2003 along with stints at ESPN and NBC and currently hosts the Internet's premier boxing channel on iBN Sports.

A winner of the Sam Taub Award for excellence in boxing broadcast journalism, Al is also a recording artist and has appeared on the stages of major casinos and resorts across the U.S.

In addition, Al authored the book "Boxing For Beginners", has written for The Ring and Boxing Illustrated and held the position of Managing Editor for Lerner Newspapers in Chicago.

We now live in a world where perception is much more powerful than reality. We see it in the political arena where spin doctoring by those in office and bias driven reporting by the media often colors public opinion more than actual facts…if we can still ascertain actual facts in that arena.

In America, many years ago there was a television police drama called Dragnet. In just about every episode the chief investigator Sgt. Joe Friday would interrupt a meandering witness by saying to them, “Just the facts.” Anyone who is truly involved with the sport of boxing, as a fan, a person who covers it, or someone working in the industry, would probably like to scream that Sgt. Friday phrase at the top of their lungs, to try and make some people actually care about the facts. More...

Boxing Result: Spinks Defeats Latimore To Win Back IBF Title In St. Louis

By Richard Eberline April 25th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Former unified welter and IBF 154 pound champ Cory Spinks clashed with local upstart Deandre Latimore in a battle of southpaws for the vacant IBF Light Middleweight title on a good Don King card in font of 9,000 fans at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MO.

Latimore had parlayed an upset of Sechew Powell last June into the clash with Spinks and the hard-punching 23 year old made the most of his opportunity last night.

Spinks was canvassed when he walked into a right hook in the first frame but beat the count and saw out the round through his long big-fight experience.

Latimore found the quicksilver Spinks a difficult target to hit cleanly with more than a smattering of shots over the next few rounds while the former champion snuck in good counter shots to both head and body at times. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Sechew Powell Vs Deandre Latimore

By Jim Everett June 13th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

**With Slideshow**

© Jim Everett / Saddo Boxing

Deandre Latimore “rocked the house” in an upset victory by scoring a seventh round technical knockout over Sechew Powell at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square, New York City on this week’s ESPN Wednesday Night Fights promoted in association with Warriors Boxing and Gotham Boxing.

Not that I want to get in the “too much information” category, but before the night of boxing began I was using the restroom and one of the St. Louis natives came in yelling “It’s gonna be an upset tonight, we didn’t come all the way from St. Louie to lose!” At this point I just smiled as I washed my hands and he continued, “You’re smilin’ but you wait and see its Latimore’s night!” I guess he knew what he was talking about.

The St. Louis native Latimore 19-1 (16) built up his record in just over two years, fighting seemingly lower level competition eleven times in 2006 and eight times in 2007, with the combined records of his opponents at 95-158-8.

From the opening bell it seemed Latimore was better than anticipated as he was able to trade with Powell from the beginning of the fight. Each fighter was able to land hard blows and made each round close. More...
