On Friday night at the Velodrome in Manchester, England, Hatton Promotions hosted their first televised fight-night. Billed as ‘Euro Glory’, the fight-card was headlined by the European title clash between Matthew Macklin and Amin Asikainen.

Matthew Macklin (Birmingham) v Amin Asikainen (Finland)
12 x 3 Vacant European Middleweight Contest

It was a very ‘stiff’ Asikainen that came out to face Macklin. Macklin looks focussed - switching between head and body shots - before landing a huge left hook which lands bang-on the face of the Finnish man and he falls back heavily on the canvas in the first round.

Struggling to get up for the count - Asikainen looks unsteady but continues with the fight. Looking dazed - he tries to get away from Macklin but the Brummie goes after him! Seconds later, Asikainen is almost bundled over and it’s a no-knockdown. More...

Saturday night, at the Eaton Hotel in Edgbaston, England, the Midlands Area Council for the British Boxing Board of Control hosted their Annual Boxing Awards Dinner.

The event has been running for 20 years but the Midlands are still the only region to host such an occasion.

Guests stood for the traditional ten-bell tribute in honour of three losses to the boxing community: Willie Wilson (Nottingham), Chris Elliott (Leicester) and the ’Voice’ of boxing - Reg Gutteridge.

This was followed by a lovely three course meal.

I shared a table with Bob Plant and female boxer Lyndsey Scragg of the Wednesbury Boxing Academy, her family and PC Andrew Whitehall and his wife. I think I was on the best table because I laughed quite a lot!

Once the meal was over, there was an auction of boxing memorabilia before it was time for the presentation of awards. More...

There was some great support action at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, England on the Frank Maloney promotion headlined by Lee Haskins' British super flyweight title defense against Ross Burkinshaw on Friday.

On the undercard, local man Trevor Crewe faced Bulgarian-born Danny Dontchev in a four round welterweight contest. Enjoying big crowd support, Crewe gets straight to work and Dontchev is down inside the opening minute of the first round from a left-right to the head.

Moments later, Crewe lands an uppercut which sees Dontchev's legs wobble. He lands on the canvas but from a bundling over and was not counted.

With just over a minute of the first round remaining, Crewe lands a number of left and right shots which starts with a left hook to the face and finished with a right - bang on the nose of Dontchev - who's head flops backwards and he falls to the canvas. More...

Last night at Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England, Oliver Harrison hosted a fight night billed as ‘Saints & Sinners: The Best of St. Helens!’ which was headlined by boxers Craig Lyon and Rob Beech from the nearby town of St. Helens. Unfortunately, Lyon’s opponent, Cobina Johnson of Ghana, came in overweight and the bout was called off at the last minute.

But the show thankfully went on and first up, we see the light welterweight clash between Chris Goodwin of Chester and Daniel Thorpe of Sheffield.

It's good contest with Goodwin having to work hard to get the win over a tough Thorpe. Goodwin wins on points 59-56 and improves to 9 wins 1 loss and 1 draw. Veteran Thorpe notched up his 101st fight!

Heavyweight Martin ‘Grid’ Grainger of Heywood faced Jason Callum of Coventry in a four round contest. More...

Held at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre in Sheffield, England, it was ‘The Ryan Rhodes Show’, headlined Ryan Rhodes’s defence of the British Light Middleweight title against Scottish boxer Jamie Coyle.

Before the main event, there were a couple of other fights which ‘whetted the appetite’ of the Sheffield crowd.

Former professional footballer - Curtis Woodhouse of Driffield, Yorkshire, faced Walsall’s Jimmy Beech in a four round welterweight contest. Round one starts messy with both fighters warned for holding and to ‘watch the head’ in the opening half minute. More...

As well as the main bout between Danny Williams and John McDermott at Dagenham last night, there was also a full bill of undercard contests.

Featherweight Akaash ʽKash the Bashʼ Bhatia, 12-0 (3), of Harrow scored a third round stoppage over Somerset's John Vanemmenis, 1-4-1 (0), in a quick-paced fight.

Delivering a combination of shots which sent his opponent toppling unsteadily off balance, Bhatia notched up his twelfth win keeping his perfect record.

South African bantamweight Tshifhiwa Munyai lost his unbeaten record when he was defeated by Edmonton based Ghanaian southpaw Osumanu Akava, 11-4 (8), at featherweight. More...

Boxing In Britain: Appleby Upsets Simpson To Win British Title

By Ricky Jones June 8th, 2008 All Boxing Results

The action on Friday night in Scotland was at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall where Paul Appleby shed his prospect status by taking the British Featherweight title from John Simpson via a very close 12 round unanimous decision.

Appleby, 12-0 (8), employed superior boxing skills to pull ahead early, dropping his fellow Scotsman Simpson in the fifth to take a decided edge.

But Simpson, 17-6 (6), wasn't going away and fought a hard-nosed effort in this see-saw battle all the way through the final bell only to lose a decision on the cards 115-113 and 115-114 twice.

There may very well be a rematch ordered by the British Board as the crucial knockdown in the fifth will certainly be disputed by Team Simpson.

On the undercard, lightweight Ryan Brawley, 9-0 (1), stopped former British Featherweight Champion Jamie McKeever, 18-9-1 (6), in seven.

McKeever, of Birkenhead near Liverpool, has now lost four on the bounce while Scottish southpaw Brawley won his first contest of 2008. More...
