Boxing Perspective: Sebastien Demers

By Jose Espinoza August 6th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

Who is Miranda? It was five days before Demers was scheduled to fight Fulgencio Zuniga last Thursday that the Colombian boxer declined to fight due to health issues.

It was then that Dionisio Miranda was contacted to take Zuniga’s place. On July 27, Demers was told that his new opponent would be another Colombian who has a respectable record of 19-2-2.

Demers had no choice, he had to fight on August 1 no matter who the opponent. ESPN, as well as other big network broadcast companies, had scheduled Demers on their programming. This was quite an opportunity for promoter Groupe Yvon Michel to headline their talented boxer and let him shine in the spotlight.

How did Demers fall to an opponent who was supposed to be practice for the Canadian fighter?

For two months, Demers had been hard at work training to face Zuniga in an eliminator bout to determine the opponent for IBF Midleweight Champion Arthur Abraham. The anticipation of the fight had attracted the attention of many in the news media, as well as the spectators who packed La Gare Windsor in order to see Demers.

Even with Zuniga sick, the Groupe Yvon Michel had to find an opponent for Demers who was scheduled to fight in an international stage for ESPN.

How did it feel to loose the IBF international belt and the NABA title in front of such important media outlets? That was the question that was most asked to the Canadian boxer. More...

Boxing In Canada: Demers Shocked In Montreal

By Danny Wilson August 2nd, 2008 All Boxing Results

Middleweight Sebastien Demers was scheduled to be on his way to a return match with IBF Champion Arthur Abraham later this year but last night at the Gare Windsor Salle des Pas Perdus in Montreal, Colombian slugger Dionisio Miranda altered those plans with a shocking split decision upset of the hometown hero.

Late replacement Miranda was coming off a hard fought loss to American prospect Peter Quillan less than two months before but the South American import showed no signs of wear and tear as he pressed Demers mercilessly and forced the action.

In the early going, it was the boxing ability of Demers which allowed the 28 year old to keep pace with the South American import but the power of Miranda began to tell as Demers was hurt in the fourth frame.

The Montreal man showed more caution in the middle rounds but Miranda closed distance by the ninth and dropped Demers after landing a hurtful barrage. Demers beat the count skilfully managed to keep Miranda off the rest of the way, but came up short in the ringside scoring after the 12th round, losing a split decision via a razor thin margin of 95-94 (twice) and 94-95.

Miranda wins the IBF International Middleweight title and also the vacant NABA strap, improving to 20-2-2 (18), while Demers falls to 25-2 (9).

On the undercard, super middle Adonis Stevenson, 12-0 (9), stayed perfect with a first round stoppage of Anthony "Bullet" Bonsante, 31-10-3 (18). Southpaw Stevenson dropped the American veteran, who appeared knocked out, and referee Gerry Bolen stopped his count early at 0:46 of the first frame before the furious Bonsante could rise and continue the contest.

Ringside Boxing Report: Sechew Powell Vs Deandre Latimore

By Jim Everett June 13th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

Deandre Latimore “rocked the house” in an upset victory by scoring a seventh round technical knockout over Sechew Powell at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square, New York City on this week’s ESPN Wednesday Night Fights promoted in association with Warriors Boxing and Gotham Boxing.

Not that I want to get in the “too much information” category, but before the night of boxing began I was using the restroom and one of the St. Louis natives came in yelling “It’s gonna be an upset tonight, we didn’t come all the way from St. Louie to lose!” At this point I just smiled as I washed my hands and he continued, “You’re smilin’ but you wait and see its Latimore’s night!” I guess he knew what he was talking about.

The St. Louis native Latimore 19-1 (16) built up his record in just over two years, fighting seemingly lower level competition eleven times in 2006 and eight times in 2007, with the combined records of his opponents at 95-158-8.

From the opening bell it seemed Latimore was better than anticipated as he was able to trade with Powell from the beginning of the fight. Each fighter was able to land hard blows and made each round close. More...
