European Boxing Union Investigates Corsican Incident Of June 1

ByBoxing Press 13/06/200713/06/2007

By Per Ake Persson

The General Assembly of the EBU was held this past weekend in Kiev, Ukraine. The Council meeting the day before began with a heated discussion on the incidents in Ajaccio June 1 where the officials were attacked by the crowd and members of the promoters´ entourage.

It appears that the French Federation tried to play the card that nothing had happend and amazingly got support from other members of the Council. What especially seems to have upset some members was that vice-President and Council member Peter Stucki had written the French Ministre of Sports and not just the French Federation and the EBU and it was claimed that this had damaged the image of professional boxing.

At the end it was decided that the French Federation have until September to conduct an investigation on what took place in Ajaccio. That something really had happend was clear when mr Stucki was able to produce medical documents on the injuries to Swiss referee and judge Beate Hausemann, there were also reports from British supervisor Charles Giles and Swedish official Mikael Hook along with French newspaper reports.

All in all the EBU handling of the the affair this far leaves boxing with another black eye it certainly doesn’t need. Peter Stucki is qouted in this week´s edition of Boxing News: “I´m not doing this to damage boxing, but for the good of it. If referees and judges are not allowed to be neutral, then what have we all come to?”

Boxing News also bring up the football game between Denmark and Sweden June 2. A crazy and drunk man tried to hit the referee and barely touched him but the officials walked out and called off the game. In Corsica the show continued.

The Marcel Cerdan Heritage have launched a set of boxing equipment. Check out marcelcerdanheritage.com for more into. Behind it you´ll find Marcel Cerdan, Jr, himself a decent pro during the 1960´s, and his son Nicolas.

“We will see a new Sinan Samil Sam against Oliver McCall” says new trainer Manny Masson. True or not, a win for Sam is likely and he will then be in a position to challenge the winner of Maskaev vs Peter.

Russian cruiser prospect Aleksander Alekseev fights Argentinian Hector Alfredo Avila for the vacant WBO I/C title on the undercard to Erdei vs Blades June 15 in Budapest. Jr welter Andreas Kotelnik square off against Hungarian Laszlo Komjathi while supermiddle Dmitri Sartison is in against Italian Emanuel Zuanel.

German cruiser veteran Rudiger May continues his comeback against George Reichert on the undercard to Klitschko vs Brewster July 7 in Cologne. Jr light Bihes Barakat is also on the show.

Swedish heavy Aldo Colliander have been forced to pull out of a planned IBF Int´l titlefight against Russian Alexey Solovyev June 23 due to a handinjury. Colliander will still go through with sparring in Karlstad this weekend against Mikael Lindblad and might still be able to fight July 6 in Hamburg on Arena Box Promotion´s gymshow.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
