Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado March 1st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Two massive fight cards took place on Saturday night in Mexico and first, we'll examine what took place at Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca as there were three world titles on the line.

Mexico City's Erik Ramirez, 25-6-1 (19), stepped up to challenge WBO Minimumweight Champion Donnie Nietes but the WBO Latino titlist was canvassed in the first, fifth, ninth and twelfth frames yet somehow managed to finish the fight on his feet, only to lose a 116-108, 115-109 and 113-111 points decision.

Nietes, of Bacolod City, Philippines, improves to 24-1-3 (14) by winning his 11th straight and retaining the WBO belt for the second time since defeating previously unbeaten Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym for the crown in September, 2007. More...

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado November 30th, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a good weekend for the fights in Central and South America. The highlight of Friday night was Jorge Linares' WBA Super Feather title win in Panama City, already reported upon, but there were also two major title fights on Saturday in Mexico.

WBC Light Flyweight Chamion Edgar Sosa had a good challenge on his hands from tough Filipino southpaw Juanito Rubilar as the pair stood toe to toe and took turns lashing the other to head and body for six contentious rounds at Arena Mexico in Mexico City.

Neither man took a backward step in the dogfight but it wasn't until Sosa caught Rubilar in the seventh round with double left hook to the head then body that the challenger began to crack.

Rubilar withstood the followup blitz but by the end of the round he was getting hammered in the corner by the champion, prompting a referee stoppage at 2:54 of the frame.

Sosa solidifies his position as the top light flyweight in the world, improving to 34-5 (18), winning his 22nd consecutive bout and retaining his WBC title for the seventh time.

Rubilar drops to 46-11-7 (22), failing in his third bid for a full world title and sees a seven bout winning streak come to a close. More...

Boxing In South And Central America: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado July 20th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There weren't any big shows this weekend but there was a good bit of action strung out across Central and South America and going alphabetically, we begin in Argentina.

On Saturday at Club Atletico Adelante in Sante Fe, Alejandro Daniel Gomez, 9-16-3 (2), reversed last December's loss to crosstown local rival Oscar Jesus Pereyra, 14-1 (10), in a big upset to capture Pereyra's WBA Fedelatin Lightweight title.

31 year old Gomez was ceding eight years of age to the previously undefeated prospect but the iron chin and long experience of "El Pato" eventually won the day.

Another upset took place on the bill when Chubut super flyweight Sebastian Eladio Ferreyra, 5-7-2 (3), took South American Flyweight Champion Santiago Ivan Acosta, 15-1-2 (7), the distance and forced a draw in a six round non-title bout.

Friday night at Club Atletico Penarol in Buenos Aires saw local man Gustavo Javier Kapusi, 19-12-3 (7), return from an IBF Pan Pacific Super Middleweight title fight loss to Sakio Bika in April by posting a six round points victory over Julian Alcides Pino, 6-7-1 (2), at cruiserweight.

Next up, Brazil, where on Saturday night at Centro Universitario Italo-Brasileiro in Sao Paulo, former world title challenger Giovanni Andrade, 58-11 (48), won two small regional belts at super bantam by stopping Argentina's Jorge Antonio Paredes, 20-14-3 (5), in the seventh frame.

On Friday in Sao Paulo, heavyweight Raphael Zumbano, 15-3-1 (14), forced a retirement of 43 year old former Brazilian titlist Carlos Barcelete, 20-16-2 (10), after five rounds of action to retain the WBC Mundo Hispano title at Companhia Athletica Brooklyn. More...
