Boxing In Mexico: Sosa Retains WBC Light Fly Crown In Capital

By Alejandro Tostado June 21st, 2009 All Boxing Results

The world's top light flyweight was in action last night as Edgar Sosa thrilled a packed hometown Arena Revolucion in Mexico City with the 9th defense of his WBC title.

Seasoned Panamanian Carlos Melo came into the bout with the reputation as an iron-chinned stylist but the former WBA minimumweight title challenger was in over his head from the start against the magnificent Sosa.

By the third frame the quick but heavily outgunned Melo was on the canvas from the champion's two-handed assault but beat the count and soldiered on.

Melo bravely soaked up the onslaught in the fourth but a shattering left hand to the liver took the legs out from under the challenger in the fifth. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Fernando Montiel Retains WBO Title

By Alejandro Tostado June 1st, 2008 All Boxing Results

WBO Super Flyweight kingpin Fernando Montiel, 37-2-1 (28), led the way on a good bill from Plaza De Toros in San Luis Potosi with a third round put-out of Jalisco slugger Luis Maldonado, 37-3-1 (28).

The skills of Montiel, who has only ever lost in world title fights, proved more than Maldonado, who has also only ever come up short in world title fights, could handle but it was the unheralded power of the Los Mochis based champion that proved to be the deciding factor in the bout.

Ex-WBC Lightweight Champion Cesar Bazan, 47-10-1 (30), returned from two losses and got back on the horse by picking up a ten round decision over novice Juan Jesus Rivera, 3-1 (1).

The sons of former world champions were also in action as super middle southpaw Hector Camacho Jr, 46-3-1 (26), stayed busy with a one round KO of overmatched Roel Salinas, 4-4 (1), while light welter prospect Jorge Paez Jr, 20-1 (12), had a no-contest with Francisco Villanueva, 4-16-1 (2).
