Boxing In America: Friday Night Results

By Richard Eberline April 4th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at Pepsi Pavilion in Memphis, TN, ex-WBO Light Welter Champion Randall Bailey, 39-6 (35), won an IBF 140 lb title eliminator in emphatic fashion by knocking out Frankie Figueroa, 20-3 (13), in the fourth round.

34 year old Bailey won the WBO crown in 1999 and made two defenses before losing it on a split decision to Ener Julio a year later.

Bailey bounced back to win the Interim WBA crown in 2002 but was KO'd in seven by Diobelys Hurtado for the full WBA title one bout later. In 2003, Bailey had a shot at his old WBO strap but was outboxed by DeMarcus Corley over twelve.

Another WBO title shot came in 2004 but Bailey was stopped on cuts in six rounds by Miguel Cotto. The Miami resident nearly made it back to the big time in 2007 but lost an IBF eliminator to Herman Ngoudjo via split decision. More...

Boxing Result: Joe Calzaghe Defeats Roy Jones At Madison Square Garden

By Richard Eberline November 9th, 2008 All Boxing Results

In a battle of two of the most decorated fighters of the past two decades, Joe Calzaghe climbed off the canvas to hand Roy Jones a twelve round unanimous decision defeat at Madison Square Garden in New York last night.

Calzaghe was winning the first round off the southpaw jab when he crouched on the inside and was caught by a uppercut he never saw coming from Jones, falling to the canvas.

But the Welshman beat the count and resumed his pressure of Jones, who tried to maintain distance and catch Calzaghe coming in.

As the rounds wore on, Calzaghe's pressure forced Jones to become more and more defensive, content to cover up on the ropes and let the younger man rattle him with a two handed assault to the head and body.

It was clearly not the Roy Jones of his prime but the 39 year old Floridian did catch Calzaghe on occasion with a hard right uppercut or right cross, which the "Welsh Wizard" simply laughed off, either making faces at the former four weight world champion or improvising a fake "hurt fighter" shimmy that seemed to anger Jones.
