Ringside Boxing: Brian Magee Vs Stevie McGuire - Lee Purdy Vs. Peter McDonagh

By Jane Warburton December 16th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

There were two other ʽtitleʼ fights on Saturday night at the Brentwood Centre, Essex, as Brian Magee faced Stevie McGuire for the vacant British Super Middleweight belt and Lee Purdy met Peter McDonagh for the British Southern Area Light Welterweight crown.

Irish-born ʽConnemara Kidʼ McDonough - now residing in Bermondsey, London, has a 12-13 (2) record coming into the bout while his younger opponent, Lee ʽLights Outʼ Purdy, hails from Colchester and is undefeated - boasting an 8-0-1 (5) CV.

In round one, McDonagh circles his opponent, whipping out the left straight while Purdy looks on, seemingly waiting to counter with a big punch. McDonagh is accurate as he picks away at the face of Purdy - while the Colchester man is a little off-target, but starts to settle in towards the latter half of the first frame. More...

Boxing Info: Stevie McGuire - Brian Magee

By Boxing Press December 10th, 2008 All Press Releases

Stevie McGuire believes Brian Magee is ready for the taking in Saturday’s Vacant British Super-Middleweight Title showdown at the Brentwood Centre.

McGuire (Glenrothes, Scotland) might be the underdog for the fight against Magee (Belfast, Northern Ireland) but he is not lacking confidence after a two-week training camp in Cyprus to get ready for the biggest fight of his life.

Magee will be trying to become British champion at the third attempt after being stopped for the same belt by new WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch in 2006 and then held to a controversial draw with Tony Oakey for the British light-heavyweight belt last year.

But McGuire is confident of improving his 15-fight unbeaten record on the Hennessy Sports show that will be shown live on ITV4 from 8.40pm. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Albert Sosnowski vs. Danny Williams

By Jane Warburton November 11th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Saturday night at the famous York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London, Hennessy Promotions hosted a fight night which would headline the heavyweight clash between Danny Williams, of Brixton, London, and Albert Sosnowski of Brentwood, Essex.

British Champion Williams was scheduled to meet John McDermott in a rematch but McDermott pulled out with an injury a few weeks ago. Now Williams faced last-minute substitute, the Polish-born Sosnowski aka "The Dragon" in a non-title contest.

Round one gets off to a good start with Sosnowski looking surprisingly "nifty" for a heavyweight. Williams - the slower of the two - takes time to size-up his opponent. But keen to impress, Williams throws a big left rather too enthusiastically and it causes him to spin around on the spot.

In the first half minute of round two, Williams lands an uppercut and Sosnowski feels it. Backed up on the ropes, Williams increases the pressure and the Polish man hangs on. Williams is warned for punching back of head and the fight continues. The referee calls time while he reprimands Sosnowski's cornerman who, despite warnings, has continued to shout instruction to his charge in Polish. More...

British Boxing: Williams, Witter In Action Tonight At York Hall

By Ricky Jones November 8th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

The long and winding career of British Heavyweight Champ Danny Williams takes another twist tonight at London's York Hall as the 35 year old "Brixton Bomber" faces Essex based Pole Albert Sosnowski in a ten round non-title affair.

Williams, 40-6 (31), has had many ups and downs since turning pro 13 years ago and won and lost the British and Commonwealth titles numerous times but never winning the big one as failures to capture the European or a world title illustrate.

Scheduled to rematch John McDermott following their very close Brit title clash in July, Williams will instead face Sosnowski, a 29 year old campaigner originally from Warsaw who has fought the majority of his career in Great Britain.

Sosnowski, 43-2 (26), has an impressive numerical won-loss record on paper but the reality of his opposition hasn't been much to write home about. The best wins of "The Dragon" have been against Lawrence Tuasa, Michael Holden, Colin Kenna, Miguel Alberto Pucheta and a 40 year old Orlin Norris.

Stepped up a bit at last in his most recent bout, Sosnowski lost all eight rounds against 38 year old American journeyman Zuri Lawrence in Brooklyn, NY this past August.

With Williams, it's difficult to tell which Danny will show up but if the motivated slugger who hammered Scott Gammer last year comes to fight tonight at York Hall, Sosnowski will have a very difficult time. More...

Boxing Result: Marsh Upsets Pickering To Take British Title

By Jane Warburton June 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Last night at the characterful York Hall, Bethnal Green in London, England, Esham Pickering and Matthew Marsh slugged it out for the British Super Bantamweight title on a Hennessy Sports promoted fight night.

The champion Pickering was looking to win the Lonsdale Belt outright as he defended it a second time - this time to younger, less experienced opponent in the 25 year old Marsh.

On home-ground, Marsh, from West Ham, was wearing his usual claret and blue trunks. ‘Brown Sugar’ Pickering was sporting a skin-head haircut bearing a bleached blonde raised logo of "Jordan".

The contest gets off to a fast start and Marsh is keen to impress - getting straight to work on Pickering and looks to have taken the first round.

Pickering is under pressure in the opening minute of round two as Marsh unloads a number of shots backing, the champion onto the ropes. Using combinations and body-punches, Marsh looks to over-power Pickering, who sees out the end of the tough round.

Pickering leaves himself wide-open in round three, getting caught with more shots from his younger opponent. Marsh keeps focussed while adopting a ‘tight’ defence. There’s a ‘nick’ under the left eye of Pickering. More...
