David Barnes is ready to resurect his boxing career after a hand injury nearly forced him out of the sport.
Barnes, 28, is one of eight British fighters aiming to win £32,000 by winning next week's Prizefighter Light-Welterweights. A former British Champion at both welterweight and light-welterweight, Barnes has not been in the ring since injury forced him to relinquish his light-welterweight title last winter.
"I broke my hand in my title victory over Barry Morrison but two weeks before my next defence (against Colin Lynes) I broke it again," said Barnes. "I've lost my belt out of the ring twice and it's been so frustrating as I'm undefeated as a British Champion.
"It was a very bad injury and the doctors told me I hadn't rested it enough when it happened again. That's why I've not been in a rush to get back in the ring otherwise it would've gone again. More...

There were two fight cards in the UK last night with former world champions Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe as promoters.
Hatton's bill took place at the Velodrome in his hometown of Manchester and featured a brace of six and four rounders.
The big name on the bill was that of ex-European, Commonwealth and British super bantam champion Michael Brodie, 35-3-2 (23), who had been out of the ring since losing a WBO
Returning as a super feather, the 35 year old local hero felt the ring rust acutely as he was dropped by opponent Mark Alexander, 8-4 (0), of London in the first and third frames before finding his rhythm to stop Alexander at 1:25 of the fourth after landing a perfect right hand. More...

In a battle of two of the most decorated fighters of the past two decades, Joe Calzaghe climbed off the canvas to hand Roy Jones a twelve round unanimous decision defeat at Madison Square Garden in New York last night.
Calzaghe was winning the first round off the southpaw jab when he crouched on the inside and was caught by a uppercut he never saw coming from Jones, falling to the canvas.
But the Welshman beat the count and resumed his pressure of Jones, who tried to maintain distance and catch Calzaghe coming in.
As the rounds wore on, Calzaghe's pressure forced Jones to become more and more defensive, content to cover up on the ropes and let the younger man rattle him with a two handed assault to the head and body.
It was clearly not the Roy Jones of his prime but the 39 year old Floridian did catch Calzaghe on occasion with a hard right uppercut or right cross, which the "Welsh Wizard" simply laughed off, either making faces at the former four weight world champion or improvising a fake "hurt fighter" shimmy that seemed to anger Jones. On Saturday, November 8, 2008, two of boxing’s best will step into the ring at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the “Mecca of Boxing”, in an HBO PPV event dubbed “Battle of the Superpowers”.
Undefeated Light Heavyweight Champion Joe “Super” Calzaghe, 45-0 (32), will face eight-time world champion “Superman” Roy Jones Jr., 52-4 (38), in the twelve round main event for the Ring Light Heavyweight Championship.
In addition to the 24/7 coverage that has been running on HBO, the fighters had a busy week with a media workout on Monday and a final press conference at BB King’s Blues Club in New York City yesterday, where many of the attendees were still buzzing over the victory of President-elect Barack Obama.
Jones’ trainer Alton Merkerson said, “I would like to say that I think everyone is pleased that the campaign for the Commander in Chief is over. It was a long campaign. It is time to try to bring this nation back to where it is supposed to be. More...

Saturday night saw Welshman Gavin Reesʽs first defence of his WBA World Light Welterweight title against Ukranian Andreas Kotelnik at Cardiff International Arena, Wales in a Sports Network promoted Fightnight.
Kotelnik, based in Hamburg, Germany, entered the ring ahead of a relaxed Gavin ʽThe Rockʼ Rees. The undefeated Rees won the title from Souleymane MʽBaye in July 2007 by unanimous points decision.
It was a good first few rounds from Rees, but he dips during the mid-rounds and in the seventh, he is inspected by the doctor for damage to the left eye area. He looks to be doing well to hang on in the closing seconds of the frame as he takes a number of punches from the Ukrianian.
It was a close contest but the quality punches have come from Kotelnik and both men sense this final round could be the decider. Rees forgets his defence and looks for the big punch but he is clearly exhausted.
With 50 seconds of round 12 to go, a left followed by a big right comes from Kotelnik and seconds later Rees falls to the canvas. The referee signals it is a slip and he helps the Welshman to his feet, but Rees looks dazed and moments later the referee calls a stop to the contest in the last half minute of the twelfth and final round, with Rees judged unfit to continue.
