British Boxing: Broadhurst Wins Commonwealth Title In Birmingham, Buckley Wins In 300th Bout

By Ricky Jones November 1st, 2008 All Boxing Results

Last night at Aston Villa Leisure Centre in Birmingham, England, Don Broadhurst, 9-0 (1), outpointed Ghanaian novice Isaac Quaye, 1-2-1 (0), over twelve rounds to win the vacant Commonwealth Super Flyweight title.

Popular local middleweight Matthew Macklin, 23-2 (16), picked up a good win by decisioning Geard Ajetovic, 16-4-1 (8), in a ten rounder while super feather Stephen Foster, 24-2-1 (16), did the same in six against journeyman Jason Nesbitt, 7-77-2 (5), while fighting at welterweight.

Boxing's most experienced fighter, Peter "The Professor" Buckley, 32-256-12 (8), finally hung up the gloves after participating in his 300th contest and capped off his career with the first win in five years by outpointing Matin Mohammed, 0-1-1 (0), in a four rounder.

39 year old Buckley has fought the top men in Britain since turning pro as a featherweight on October 4, 1989 with a draw against Alan Baldwin at the Colosseum in Stafford, England.

An unbelievably active fighter, Buckley's record stood at 10-5-3 (1), after his first full year, 18 contests over twelve months! More...

Boxing In Russia: Alexander Povetkin Wins In Chekhov

By Danny Wilson July 20th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Top heavyweight contender Alexander Povetkin, 16-0 (12), stayed busy in preparation to his likely challenge of World Champion Wladimir Klitschko later this year by overcoming America's Taurus Sykes, 25-5-1 (7), at 0:48 of the second round last night at Olimpyskiy Sports Palace in the Moscow suburb of Chekhov, Russia.

28 year old Moscow based Povetkin has impressed as a professional after capping off a sterling amateur career by winning the Gold Medal for Russia at super heavyweight during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Since joining the punch for pay rat race in 2005, Povetkin has gone through opposition at an alarming rate, participating in four or five bouts a year and in addition to Sykes, has defeated Eddie Chambers, Chris Byrd and Larry Donald over the last 13 months.

Against Sykes, Povetkin looked like the world-beater who swept through the amateur ranks in the earlier part of this decade, mixing up his punches in a fluid, combination style that had the American looking for answers from the off.

A ten year pro, Sykes has faced good to decent competition in the form of Samuel Peter, Hasim Rahman, Owen Beck, Imamu Mayfield, Sherman Williams, Derek Bryant and Friday Ahunanya but was clearly out-boxed by the Russian gunner, hitting the floor in both the second and third frames, and after taking many flush punches was stopped at 0:48 of the fourth round. Boxing In Australia: Friday Night Results

By Bruce Dingo June 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a massive night of fisticuffs last night Down Under and with so much action to choose from, it's difficult to know where to start!

But start we must and that takes us to the Sydney area where at the Catholic in Campbelltown, NSW, there was a big showdown at middleweight between IBO Champion Daniel Geale and challenger Geard Ajetovic.

Geale was coming off a masterful boxing performance last December against previously undefeated slugger Daniel "The Rock" Dawson to win the vacant IBO belt and but the Mt. Annan stylist was facing a tough challenge in this one.

Ajetovic, a native Serbian who has fought his entire career in England, had completed his last six bouts without a loss following a narrow disappointment to European Champ Christopher Canclaux in a non-title bout two years ago.

When the bout started, it was clear that Geale possessed the sharper skills and ring generalmanship, but the dangerous Ajetovic closed distance and badly the champion in the fifth round. More...
