It was war in the ring last night at Seidensticker Halle in Bielefeld as the European Cruiserweight Championship was waged with great ferocity between defending titlist Jean Marc Monrose and former world title challenger Marco Huck for twelve rounds.
Monrose sought to take away the challenger's height advantage by turning the bout into a phone booth clash and it worked to a degree, putting Huck onto the backfoot and on the defensive early.
But Huck learned a great deal in his failed bid to unseat IBF Champion Steve Cunningham last year and the 23 year old Bielefeld resident focused on not getting hit and patiently waited for opportunities.
And the free-swinging European Champion gave away those opportunities as he came in and was picked off time and time again by flush shots from Huck but the challenger wasn't able to dent the Frenchman's impressive chin until the twelfth and final round when the action was called to a halt at 1:17 of the frame.
Huck improves to 22-1 (17) and becomes the new European Cruiserweight Champion while Monrose drops to 24-2 (15). More...

Seidensticker Hall in Bielefeld tonight sees a big show with two European title fights on tap for the cruiserweight and super middle crowns up for grabs.
Former IBF Youth and French titlist Jean Marc Monrose, 24-1 (15), makes the first defense of the European belt that he won by stopping previously undefeated Johny Jensen in the first round back in May but will face experienced Yugoslav born local man Marco Huck, 21-1 (16), a former European Union title holder.
Huck had blasted his way through respectable European competition and earned a title shot against IBF Champion Steve Cunningham in December of last year. Despite an edge in youth and perhaps strength, Huck was no match for the highly mobile and fast-handed champion as Cunningham won by a 12th and final round stoppage.
European Super Middle Champ Karo Murat, 17-0 (11), will also be making his maiden voyage as a Continental titlist, having taken the trophy from seasoned Italian southpaw Cristian Sanavia in a hotly contested bout this past April.
Challenging Murat will be left-handed stylist Gabriel Campillo, 16-1 (6), a former Spanish Light Heavyweight titlist who comes to Bielefeld riding a four bout win streak.
On the undercard, European Union Light Middleweight kingpin Christophe Canclaux, 36-2 (22), of France faces Estonia's Albert Starikov, 11-9 (4), over eight rounds in a non-title bout and cruiserweight prospect Geoffrey Batello, 16-0 (13), meets Walter Palacios, 19-15-2 (11), over the same distance.

I'm amazed. After Wladimir Klitschko’s KO victory over Tony Thompson in Hamburg, Germany, a week ago, he should have risen in the esteem of boxing fans.
Thompson was a credible threat whose only other loss occurred eight years ago. In a bout where Klitschko showed his ability to control an opponent, dictate a pace and reaffirm his punching power against said threat, he seems to have even eroded even further down the pound-for-pound list.
Perhaps fans are overly critical of him because of the “state” the division is in. Heavyweights aren’t as exciting as they’ve been in the past and compare weakly with their welterweight or super middleweight counterparts. But how much of that is fair?
Two years ago, no one was talking about the super middleweights, just the thimbleful of names who were in it. With fighters like Jermain Taylor moving up, Mikkel Kessler becoming known in the US and Kelly Pavlik straddling the fence between the super middleweight and middleweight divisions, it has spelled instant excitement whenever there is mention of anything at 168 pounds.
The welterweight division has always kept a rotating stable of elite fighters and quite frankly, is a lot deeper than heavyweight, and logic follows reason that it would have more elite fighters because it has more fighters.
But what are people not seeing when they see Klitschko fight? He has an 83% KO percentage, an amazing ratio at any weight when the fighter has over fifty fights. If you just consider his last ten fights, the percentage drops to 60.
Lennox Lewis only had a 72% KO percentage, Evander Holyfield 50%, Mike Tyson 75% and George Foreman 83%. And a weak division is a poor excuse. Mike Tyson didn’t fight the really elite fighters until the decline of his career. During his original reign as champion, there were no fighters like Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield on his résumé. The 90's were only marginally better than the 80's and if Holyfield had remained at cruiserweight, there would have been no wars with Bowe, Lewis or Tyson. More...

Tonight in Hamburg, Germany, Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko defends his WBO and IBF Heavyweight titles against Tony Thompson.
In this one, Klitschko, for a change, will be facing an opponent almost equal to him in height. The American challenger from Washington DC stands 6 foot 5 inches tall and has a respectable record of 31 fights with only 1 defeat. He hold wins over divisional contenders Dominick Guinn, Timor Ibragimov and Luan Krasniqi.
Klitschko, the champion, now holds a record of 50 wins with only 3 defeats and for me, is still the best of the bunch at heavyweight currently. Although in an era where marquee heavyweight opponents are sadly lacking, Klitschko is doing the right thing by keeping himself busy and attempting to build a legacy that way.
While Thompson is a respected challenger, I feel his style will play straight into the champion's hands. The southpaw delivery of Thompson could be tricky for most opponents, but this time it could be the American's undoing as he will be vulnerable to the Ukranian's booming right hands when throwing his own left.
The Klitschko of 2008 is a more cautious fighter, but I feel after starting the bout behind his jab, he will begin to connect with his right hand to end the fight on a TKO around the midway mark.

The “Black Panther” is back in town! After returning to Hamburg on Monday Juan Carlos Gomez, 43-1 (35), currently no. 2 in the WBC world ratings, is full of self-confidence for his upcoming WBC Eliminator against no. 1 rated Vladimir Virchis, 24-1 (20).
“Coming back to Hamburg always feels like coming home”, states Gomez. “I have only one goal: 'The Black Panther' is going big-game hunting. I promise all of my fans: I will be world heavyweight champion soon!”

The luck of Wladimir Sidorenko finally ran out last night at Burg-Waechter Castello in Dusseldorf as the WBA Bantamweight Champion was outpointed by Panama's Anselmo Moreno after twelve rounds.
Moreno, 22-1-1 (8), leveraged a sizable height advantage and southpaw stance to keep the normally hyper-busy Sidorenko, 21-1-2 (7), off his game and take a shocking 116-113 and 116-112 (twice) unanimous decision to annex the WBA 118 lb title that Sidorenko has held since early 2005.
The top Women's featherweight in the world had no such problems as Ina Menzer, 21-0 (9), stayed perfect in defense of her WIBF and WBC titles by planting the first career loss on the resume of American import Stacey Reile, 8-1 (3), via fourth round TKO.
English upset specialist Michael Sprott, 30-12 (15), attempted to derail the 11 fight victory train of heavyweight Taras Bidenko, 26-2 (11), but the former British, Commonwealth and European Union Champion fell short after ten rounds, losing a 97-93 (twice), 97-94 decision.
Heavy-handed cruiserweight Alexander Alexeev, 15-0 (14), won the biggest fight of his career thus far by crushing former world title challenger Louis Azille, 19-6-2 (15), of America in the second round.

Tonight at the Burg-Waechter Castello in Dusseldorf, Germany, WBA Bantam ruler Wladimir Sidorenko puts his title on the line against Panamanian southpaw Anselmo Moreno on the top of a very big bill.
Sidorenko, 21-0-2 (7), won the WBA belt in early 2005 with a unanimous decision over Mexico's Julio Zarate and to date has retained the title seven times in a row.
This will be the first trip back to Germany for Sidorenko since March of last year as the 31 year old Ukrainian native won his last two contests in France and Japan.
Tonight, Sidorenko will carry his high work rate style into the ring against Anselmo Moreno, a young and hungry challenger from El Martillo, Panama.
The 22 year old southpaw is the reigning WBA Fedecentro titlist and won a WBA title eliminator last August by crushing longtime former NABF beltholder Ricardo "Chapo" Vargas in just one round. More...

World class cruiserweight Marco Huck won his second bout in a row following his failed bid to unseat IBF Champion Steve Cunningham last December with a ninth round stoppage of big punching Slovakian International Champion Frantisek Kasanic, 12-3 (12), at the Oberfrankenhalle in Bayreuth.
Former European Union titlist Huck, 21-1 (16), is looking to get back onto the world stage but is likely still a few more wins away from those kind of opportunities.
Also on the card, Alexander Frankel, 15-0 (11), KO'd Cory Phelps, 12-4-1 (7), in the first round to capture the vacant IBF Youth Cruiserweight title while Italian southpaw Francesco Pianeta, 16-0 (10), stopped highly rated American Mike Marrone, 18-1 (13), for the WBC World Youth Heavyweight title.
Ex-European Super Middleweight titlist Vitali Tsypko, 22-2 (12), won his third straight bout with a third round finishing of Marcin Piatkowski, 19-12-2 (6). More...

Last night at the Freiberger Arena in Dresden, Germany, WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Zsolt Erdei put on a boxing clinic against challenger DeAndrey Abron, posting a wide points decision over the ambitious American and WBO Light Middle boss Sergiy Dzinziruk managed a hard fought majority decision over Lukas Konecny after twelve rounds.
Erdei, 29-0 (17), needed a rebuilding fight after almost losing his belt to Tito Mendoza last November and got exactly as he patiently dodged the big punching efforts of Abron and picked off his fellow competitor with stinging counters all night long.
It wasn't until the twelfth and final frame that Erdei finally went after Abron, who showed a great deal of heart and toughness in weathering the heaviest shots that the champion could throw to finish the bout on his feet.
"The Firebird" of Budapest won all three scorecards by margins of 119-109, retaining his WBO belt for the tenth time and is looking for a unification bout with IBF/IBO titlist Antonio Tarver. More...

Last night at Bordelandhalle in Magdeburg, Germany, middleweight sensation Sebastian Zbik kept his undefeated record with a convincing twelve round win over stocky warrior Marco Schultze to retian the WBO Intercontinental belt for the third time.
The taller Zbik, 22-0 (8), controlled the pace of the bout and largely avoided the incursions of Schultze, 25-4-1 (13), to post a 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111.
Zbik should be ready to step up to begin challenging the top class in Europe later this year and is one of the most promising 160 lb fighters on the Continental scene.
On the undercard, middleweight contender Koren Gevor, 29-3 (15), won his second in a row following an unsuccessful bid to unseat IBF Champion Arthur Abraham last summer by posting a wide points decision over Brazilian import Samir Dos Santos Barbosa, 18-4-3 (14), after ten rounds. More...
