A lot of action took place south of the border this weekend, mostly in Argentina and we kick this report off in The Land of Silver with a massive show at Club Atletico Newell's Old Boys in Rosario on Saturday.
South America's top welterweight, Sebastian Andres Lujan, 31-5-2 (20), headlined the card but was pushed hard by Venezuela's Charlie Jose Navarro, 17-3 (12), who lost a hard fought majority decision to Lujan.
One of the best light welter prospects in the world was also in action at Rosario as Lucas Martin Matthysse, 24-0 (22), knocked out Luis Ernesto Jose, 29-6-2 (24), in the second round, while super feather Carlos Ricardo Rodriguez, 20-2 (11), knocked out Alberto Leopoldo Santillan, 15-2 (4), in the sixth. At Club Once Unidos in Mar del Plata, Argentina last night, multiple world title challenger Luis Alberto Lazarte won the South American Light Flyweight title by outpointing San Miguel's Gustavo Adrian Rodriguez, 14-9 (3), over twelve rounds in the third bout between the pair.
37 year old Mar del Plata man Lazarte, 42-9-1 (17), has held numerous regional belts and challenged for world titles at flyweight, light flyweight and minimumweight.
"El Mosquito" has only been stopped one in his career, by WBC Flyweight Champ Pongasaklek Wonjongkam in 2001, while four losses have been by split or majority decision but a full four losses have been by disqualification.
Also on the bill, 6 foot 6 inch tall Gonzalo Omar Basile, 39-4 (18), had to climb off the canvas in the second to drop and stop chinny banger Daniel Frank, 20-13-1 (20), of Brazil in the third to retain the WBO Latino Heavyweight crown. More...

Former WBC Lightweight Champion Jose Luis Castillo was back in action on Saturday, stopping James Wayka in the second round of a scheduled ten at Palenque del Fex in Mexicali, Mexico.
The 35 year old Castillo, 57-9-1 (49), now campaigns as a welterweight and was coming off a loss to Argentina's Sebastian Andres Lujan in July. American visitor Wayka drops to 16-8 (8).
Also on the card, lightweight Ricardo Dominquez, 26-4-2 (15), won an eight round majority draw against former Mexican Super Feather titlist Guadalupe Rosales, 27-4 (15).
At the Polideportivo Municipal in Monte Hermoso, Buenos Aires, Argentina, former WBA Fedelatin Welter Champ Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez, 33-2-1 (12), took home the vacant WBC Mundo Hispano title at welterweight by posting a split decision over former South American titlist Raul Eduardo Bejarano, 25-17-4 (12), after twelve rounds of close combat. There was a smattering of action below the Rio Grande this weekend and we start off in Mexico where there was a battle for the IBF Minimumweight crown at Loreto in Baja California Sur last night.
Local man Raul Garcia, 25-0-1 (16), walked into the arena as reigning champion and after twelve rounds of combat with challenger Jose Luis Varela, 15-6 (7), of Colombia, still held the title, outpointing the former WBA Fedebol kingpin by wide margins in a rematch.
The two originally squared off in September with Garcia also winning that bout and "Rayito" has now retained the IBF belt on two occasions. Varela has lost his last three bouts, each in world title challenges.
Chief support on the bill was provided by San Antonio, Texas based lightweight Juan Castaneda, 15-1 (12), who dropped Los Mochis battler Abel Berrelleza, 19-10-2 (10), three times enroute to posting a first round KO.
Mexico City super feather Alejandro Sanabria, 19-0 (15), kept on track with a third round KO of 39 year old journeyman Jorge Romero, 8-40-1 (4), and David Gaspar, 8-0-1 (5), captured the vacant WBA Fedecaribe Super Flyweight belt with a majority decision against Francisco Reyes, 4-9-2 (3). More...

On Saturday at Polideportivo Municipal in La Pampa, light welterweight Martin Antonio Coggi took a big step up in class to knock off Carlos Wilfredo Vilches via unanimous decision and capture the South American title.
25 year old Buenos Aires southpaw Coggi, 21-2-1 (11), had largely mixed with a lesser grade of opposition and was just eight months from a tenth and final round stoppage loss at the hands of veteran Diego Martin Alzugaray when he met Vilches in the ring.
Vilches, 54-9-2 (32), has swapped punches with some of the top light welters in the world but if a fourth round KO loss to former world champion Juan Urango during a IBF title eliminator in April was a sign that the 32 year old from Sante Rosa had slipped a bit, the loss to domestic level operator Coggi confirmed the notion.
There was a battery of action in the Land of Silver on Friday with the hotspot being Buenos Aires.
At Club Ferro Carril Oeste, the vacant South American Light Heavyweight Championship was sorted when Julio Cesar Dominquez, 19-4-1 (13), dropped former Argentine Super Middle titlist Martin Abel Bruer, 19-4 (1), in the second before KO'ing his crosstown local rival in the fifth round. More...

It was a big weekend in The Land of Silver and we start off last night in Rio Negro where South American Lightweight Champion Aldo Nazareno Rios, 45-4 (11), enjoyed a rare knockout win by crushing Sergio Daniel Ledesma, 23-14-1 (9), in the first round during a non-title fight at Polideportivo Municipal Stadium Number 2.
Rios, a former IBO Lightweight Champion, has enjoyed a tremendous career, falling short only to world champions Stevie Johnston, Artur Grigorian, Ricky Hatton, Isaac Hlatswayo since turning pro in 1995.
On the undercard, middleweight Billi "El Nino" Godoy, 11-0 (6), stayed perfect by knocking out Adrian Marcelo Nieva, 8-9-2 (3), in the third round.
At Club Tomas De Rocamora in Entre Rios, Argentine Light Welter titlist Cesar Rene Cuenca, 33-0 (1), stayed on track for a world title shot by posting a unanimous decision over Marcelo Martin Miranda, 11-11-3 (3), in a ten round non-title bout. More...
