Boxing In Mexico: Sosa Retains WBC Crown In Tamaulipas

By Alejandro Tostado April 5th, 2009 All Press Releases

Last night at Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas, Mexico, WBC Light Flyweight Champion Edgar Sosa continued his reign with a fourth round TKO of challenger Pornsawan Porpramook.

Longtime PABA minimumweight champion and two-time world title challenger Porpramook had never been stopped before but the 30 year old Thai could not withstand the punishment doled out by the hard charging Mexico City resident Sosa.

Sosa sees his record to 35-5 (19), retaining the WBC belt for the eighth time and could be in line to face IBF Champion Ulises Solis, who holds two razor thin wins over Sosa in 2000 and 2003, should Solis defeat Sosa victim Brian Viloria later this month. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Saturday Night Preview

By Alejandro Tostado April 4th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Two good fight cards in Mexico tonight with the top bill taking place at Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas where Edgar Sosa will defend his WBC Light Flyweight crown.

Sosa, 34-5 (18), has been on fire since 2003, winning 22 straight contests and picking up the WBC belt against Brian Viloria two years ago by majority decision.

The Mexico City man has retained the title seven times and tonight will face off with longtime former PABA Minimumweight beltholder Pornsawan Porpramook, 21-2 (16), who has also fought under the name Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym.

Porpramook, of Sa Kaeo, Thailand, has only come up short when failing to unseat WBO Minimumweight Champ Donnie Nietes in 2007 and WBC King Oleydong Sithsamerchai last year. More...

Boxing Result: Soto Wins WBC Title Over Lorenzo In Cozumel

By Alejandro Tostado December 21st, 2008 All Boxing Results

Six months after their well-documented first bout ended in a fiasco, super featherweights Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo went at it again, this time for the vacant WBC title, at Parque Andres Quintana Roo in Cozumel, Mexico.

The much shorter Lorenzo came out strong, backing up Soto and enjoying a few good moments in the first frame, landing overhand rights but was also clipped with sharp counters from Soto for his efforts.

With each successive round, Soto became more effective at picking off the oncoming Lorenzo but the Mexican allowed his Dominican opponent to stay in the bout by slugging it out rather than using his height and reach advantage to good effect by boxing.

Soto fought Lorenzo's fight and the action wasn't pretty. Lorenzo found the target plenty of times to be sure but was decked and hurt on more than one occasion and didn't help his cause in losing two points for infractions.

But the outcome was really never in doubt as Soto outclassed his opponent to win the vacant WBC title by scores of 118-108 and 117-109 twice, improving to 46-7-2 (29). Lorenzo falls to 33-5 (14) after mounting a far better performance than during the first bout with Soto. More...
