Boxing In Japan: Cazares, Nashiro Draw In WBA Title Fight

By Danny Wilson September 30th, 2009 All Boxing Results

A battle for the WBA super flyweight belt was waged today at The Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka, Japan.

Local hero Nobuo Nashiro was making the second title defense of his second WBA reign and faced Mexico's Hugo Fidel Cazares over twelve rounds.

Ex-WBO light flyweight kingpin Cazares was the more experienced man and brought a three bout win streak to Osaka following his hard fought but failed bid to unseat Ivan Calderon for the Los Mochis man's former title.

Once the bell rang, Cazares pressed the champion in an effort to take the result out of the judges' hands but after 12 rounds of give and take action, the fighters were too close to be separated on the cards, resulting in a 116-112, 114-114 and 112-116 draw.

Nashiro keeps his WBA title and goes to 13-1-1 (8), while Cazares returns to Mexico empty handed after a huge effort with his record now standing at 30-6-2 (22).

There was a good bill last night at Centro Banamex in Mexico City with Juan Palacios, 26-2 (21), stopping Eric Ramirez, 26-7-1 (19), in the tenth frame to retain the Interim WBC minimumweight title.

Hard punching Nicaraguan Palacios has lived up to his "El Exterminador" nickname by posting his fifth straight stoppage in addition to his 15th consecutive win.

Super flyweight Ana Maria Torres, 18-3-2 (11), outpointed Usanakorn Kokietgym, 4-1 (4), over ten for the WBC Female crown and Gerson Guerrero, 34-8 (26), stopped Enrique Quevedo, 8-3 (5), in the ninth to capture the vacant NABF super flyweight belt. More...

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado March 1st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Two massive fight cards took place on Saturday night in Mexico and first, we'll examine what took place at Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca as there were three world titles on the line.

Mexico City's Erik Ramirez, 25-6-1 (19), stepped up to challenge WBO Minimumweight Champion Donnie Nietes but the WBO Latino titlist was canvassed in the first, fifth, ninth and twelfth frames yet somehow managed to finish the fight on his feet, only to lose a 116-108, 115-109 and 113-111 points decision.

Nietes, of Bacolod City, Philippines, improves to 24-1-3 (14) by winning his 11th straight and retaining the WBO belt for the second time since defeating previously unbeaten Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym for the crown in September, 2007. More...

Boxing In Puerto Rico: WBO Champ Calderon Leads The Way On Big Show In Bayamon

By Alejandro Tostado August 31st, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was an epic card last night at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon as there were a full four title fights, headlined by a WBO Light Flyweight championship defense by Ivan Calderon.

The 33 year old southpaw took on the man he won the WBO belt from, Mexico's Hugo Fidel Cazares, in a rematch to last year's bout in which Calderon had to climb off the floor in the eighth in order to pull out a split decision.

This time, Calderon was on his way to outboxing Cazares in a close, competitive bout until an accidental head clash produced a deep laceration on the forehead of the Puerto Rican icon and the bout was declared a technical decision in favor of Calderon at 1:58 of the seventh.

Calderon, who won twelve WBO minimumweight title fights, stays undefeated at 32-0 (6)while Cazares loses only his second bout in eight years, both to Calderon.

On the undercard, super feather Roman Martinez, 20-0-1 (12), stayed perfect with a sixth round TKO over Santos Benavides, 14-2-1 (12), to retain the WBO NABO crown.

Bantamweight Eric Morel, 39-2 (20), a former WBA Flyweight Champ, continued his comeback from a three year hiatus by winning his fourth contest on the bounce, posting a twelve round UD over veteran Heriberto Ruiz, 39-7-2 (23), who was down in the third.

Welter Euri Gonzalez, 17-0-1 (12), chinned Edwin Vasquez, 22-13-2 (8), in the second session to annex the vacant WBO Latino trophy.

Boxing In Puerto Rico: Calderon Defeats Dieppa For WBO Crown

By Alejandro Tostado April 6th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There was a big card at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan last night with the headliner a hotly anticipated showdown between the top two light flyweights in Puerto Rico, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon and Nelson Dieppa. At stake was the WBO Light Flyweight title held by Calderon since jumping up from minimumweight last year.

37 year old Dieppa had held the title in the earlier part of the decade but had it removed by Mexican slugger Hugo Fidel Cazares in 2005 and failed a year later to reclaim the belt in a rematch. Since then the Vieques natives had gone 1-1 and was looking to right his flagging career with a win over Calderon.

But it was not in the cards last night for Dieppa as Calderon was on point from start to finish, beating the older man to the punch with his fast hands flowing from a southpaw stance. Utilizing cat-quick reflexes and superb footwork, Calderon never let Dieppa in the bout and cruised to a dominating 120-108 verdict on all three scorecards. More...
