Boxing Result: WBA Champ Garay Dethroned In Argentina

By Alejandro Tostado June 21st, 2009 All Boxing Results

At Sunchales in Sante Fe, Argentina last night, WBA light heavy champ Hugo Hernan Garay was upset by former Spanish light heavy titlist Gabriel Campillo, who pulled off a 12 round majority decision shocker.

Garay, of Tigre, Buenos Aires, won the vacant WBA belt last July with a decision over Yuri Barashian at Buenos Aires' famous Luna Park Stadium and was coming off a successful defense in Germany against Juergen Braehmer in November.

The native Argentine was expected to retain against Madrid based southpaw Campillo, who was coming off a narrow loss to Karo Murat for the European super middle title last September before winning the European Union 168 lb crown with a hard fought UD over Lolenga Mock in March.

Looking to take control of the bout from the start, Garay commanded the center of the ring during the early rounds and put his greater experience to good use to keep the challenger on the defensive, much to the delight of the 5,000 strong pro-Garay audience. More...

Boxing Perspective: Who Should Joe Calzaghe Fight Next?

By Danny Wilson January 8th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

After turning back most of his top level competition at super middleweight, longtime WBO Champion Joe Calzaghe left behind the 168 pound division in a much anticipated move to light heavyweight and has summarily dismissed legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones in 2008.

Standing now at 46-0 (32), the soon to be 37 year old "Welsh Wizard" is looking at a few remaining bouts before hanging up the gloves for good in the near future, possibly after making a run at Rocky Marciano's amazing 49-0 career mark.

But who should Calzaghe face in his next outing?

The top young gun in the division is undoubtedly the undefeated 26 year old southpaw Chad Dawson, but the IBF/IBO titlist is slated to meet Antonio Tarver in a rematch in March and won't be ready to step back in the ring again, assuming he gets past Tarver again, until September or October.

That could be too long for Calzaghe, who was last in action against Jones in November.

If Calzaghe continues his trend of fighting older foes, there's always Glen Johnson, the 40 year old ex-IBF titlist, but it wouldn't likely generate the kind of money that "Super Joe" is seeking in one of his final bouts. More...

Boxing In Germany: Erdei, Inkin Put WBO Belts At Risk January 10

By Hermann Helmut January 2nd, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Two WBO titlists will put their belts at risk on January 10 in Magdeburg, Germany as newly minted Dennis Inkin and longtime champ Zsolt Erdei see action on the bill.

Light heavy kingpin Erdei, 29-0 (17), has held the WBO crown for almost five years now and has successfully navigated his way through ten title defenses over that span of time.

The 34 year old "Firebird" has had a rocky reign, posting a majority decision and split decision over current WBA titlist Hugo Hernan Garay in two bouts, a split decision against Tito Mendoza and was veering very close to a loss before stopping ex-WBA titlist Mehdi Sahnoune in the final round of their contest.

Erdei has also made a lot of defenses against less that top flight competition and on January 10 will continue that tradition against Ukraine based Armenian Yuri Barashian, 25-4 (17).

29 year old southpaw Barashian is coming off a loss for the vacant WBA title challenge to cagey Argentine Garay in which he was soundly outboxed and widely outpointed.

Prior to that, Barashian won the European title by knocking out Germany's Thomas Ulrich but once past that victory, the resume of wins becomes very thin. More...

Boxing Result: Garay Retains WBA Title Over Brahmer In Rostock

By Hermann Helmut November 23rd, 2008 All Boxing Results

WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Hugo Hernan Garay came to Stad Halle in Rostock last night and took the best shots of challenger Juergen Brahmer and came back with quick combinations to outwork his German opponent via unanimous decision after 12 rounds.

Showing good stamina and accuracy, Garay, 32-3 (17), of Argentina capitalized on his speed advantage to counter Brahmer, 31-2 (25), and at times, pepper the challenger with a variety of shots from either hand in rapid succession.

Garay retains the title he won in July and is hoping to get a third bout with WBO titlist Zsolt Erdei, who was at ringside at Stad Hall, and unify the belts.

Boxing In Germany: Garay Defends WBA Crown In Rostock

By Hermann Helmut November 22nd, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at Stadhalle in Rostock, WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Hugo Hernan Garay, 31-3 (17), puts his belt at risk against Schwerin southpaw Juergen Brahmer, 31-1 (25).

Brahmer will have the home advantage against the Argentine visitor and the hard punching 30 year old rides a four bout winning streak into his first world title challenge.

While Brahmer has faced good competition during his run up to the world title, he will be taking a step up when the bell rings against 27 year old Garay, a Buenos Aires man who pushed WBO Champion Zsolt Erdei hard during a pair of title challenges in 2004 and 2005. More...

European Boxing News: Klitschko, Thompson, Baysangurov, Drews, Branco, Larsen, Erdei

By Boxing Press July 12th, 2008 All Press Releases

By Per Ake Persson

IBF, WBO and IBO Heavy Champ Wladimir Klitschko weighed in 109.3 kg / 241 lb at yesterday's chaotic weigh-in at a major shopping center in Hamburg, Germany that took place at noon.

Challenger Tony Thomnpson came in at 247.5 lb / 112.3 kg. Thompson didn´t take of his shirt, which led to some speculation that he had something to hide - but I was told that yesterday evening at 10 PM, he worked out hard and impressively in the gym at the Maritim Hotel. More...

Boxing In Argentina: Garay Leads Way On Big Week In The Land Of Silver

By Alejandro Tostado July 6th, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a massive week of fights in Argentina this weekend and the action began early as Hugo Hernan Garay met Yuri Barashian for the vacant WBA Light Heavyweight title in famed Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Australian Danny Green was scheduled to defended his WBA crown against Buenos Aires man Garay but had retired instead, vacating the crown and paving the way for the title bout against Ukrainian southpaw Barashian.

When the contest commenced, Garay displayed clear advantages in speed and ability to take the early rounds against the visitor, who studied Garay as the Ukrainian conserved energy for the long battle ahead.

By the middle rounds, Garay was throwing a shutout with a perfectly balanced attack to the head and body. It seemed if Barashian would never find his way into the fight but the southpaw was soon to make a shambles of that perception. More...

Boxing In Argentina: Garay vs. Barashian Tonight For WBA Light Heavy Title

By Alejandro Tostado July 3rd, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at the famed Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the WBA Light Heavyweight title vacated by Australia's Danny Green will be fought over by Hugo Hernan Garay and Yuri Barashian.

For Garay, 30-3 (17), this could be the breakthrough moment denied to him during narrow split and majority decision losses to WBO titlist Zsolt Erdei in Germany in 2004 and 2005. The 27 year old Buenos Aires man sees what has to be his best chance to win a world title tonight as the venue will be packed with adoring fans.

Standing in the way of Garay will be Ukrainian southpaw, Yuri Barashian, who hasn't lost in almost five years.

Barashian, 25-3 (17), is coming off the biggest win of his career in February when he knocked out Thomas Ulrich in eight rounds to capture the European title but will be facing a more difficult proposition in the form of Garay. More...
