One of the most anticipated matchups in the lightweight division takes place tonight as Juan Manuel Marquez clashes with Juan Diaz for the WBA, WBO and IBO title belts at Houston's Toyota Center with WBA Featherweight Champion Chris John making his first American appearance on the undercard as the Indonesian faces local challenger Rocky Juarez.
Marquez, 49-4-1 (36), and Diaz, 34-1 (17), both made weight yesterday, coming in at 134.24 and 143.5 pounds respectively with John, 42-0-1 (22) tipping the scales at 125.25 pounds and Juarez, 28-4 (20), at 125.5 pounds.
At 35 years of age and a natural featherweight, Mexico's Marquez is risking a great deal in this contest with Diaz, who fought his first year as a pro at light welter and is ten years younger than Marquez.
Also, Diaz is immensely popular in his hometown of Houston and on his side he'll have a bigger portion of the large crowd expected to pack out the cavernous Toyota Center. More...

By Jim Everett February 18th, 2009 All Boxing Interviews
This past weekend, SaddoBoxing had the opportunity to speak with Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz in an exclusive interview as he completes his preparation to face the Ring Lightweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez on February 28 at the Toyota Center in his hometown of Houston, Texas.
In 2008, Diaz, 34-1 (17), suffered his first loss, losing the WBA, WBO and IBF Lightweight titles via split decision to Nate Campbell. Consequently in his first title defense, Cambell lost the belts this past weekend, not in the ring but on the scales, unable to make the 135 pound weight limit.
The bout with Campbell was the Houston native’s last contractual fight with promoter Don King, who also promoted Nate Campbell.
After signing with Golden Boy Promotions, the "Baby Bull" charged back from his first loss refusing to take an “easy” comeback fight, winning a split decision victory against hard-hitting Michael Katsidis last September.
Although Diaz’s upcoming fight with Ring Lightweight Champion Marquez, 49-4-1 (36), is against the biggest name he has faced in his career, Diaz doesn’t seem to be phased. He is able to work harder than ever before, still take his college courses and is scheduled to graduate in May. More...

It was a four title fight night at the Emperor's Palace in Kempton Park last evening with two IBO and two South African crowns on the line.
It was hard to call the action between IBO Super Flyweight Champ Masibulele "Hawk" Makepula, 28-5 (18), of East London and his local rival, Zolile "Bonecrusher" Mbityi, 32-13-3 (11), who is the reigning South African Champ at 115 lb.
By the time the 12th round came to a close, 37 year old Mbityi was declared the winner and new IBO titlist by split decision scores of 116-113, 115-113 and 115-116.
A former IBO and South African Champ at flyweight, Mbityi has now won four in a row while Makepula was coming off a loss to Jorge Arce of Mexico in a WBC Super Flyweight title eliminator.
One of the best bantamweights in the world, Silence Mabuza, 22-2 (18), made an appearance at Emperor's Palace and "African Spice" pounded out a fifth round stoppage of Argentine visitor Damian David Marchiano, 15-4-1 (15), of Buenos Aires. More...

Friday night Down Under saw two important contests, the first of which took place at the Croatian Club in the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl and featured IBO Welterweight Champion Isaac "The Angel" Hlatswayo defeat challenger Robert Medley for the second time in less than six months.
The pair fought their initial bout last October In Penrith and Hlatswayo put on a clinic, dropping the previously unbeaten former Australian Light Middle titlist in the fifth before coasting to a wide points verdict, retaining the IBO belt for the first time.
This time the action was only slightly more competitive as the six foot tall Medley seemed to have improved but still was unable to solve Hlatswayo's edge in speed and aggression, despite a four inch height advantage.
Medley hit the canvas in the very first frame but battled back to impose his will at times afterward. The champion however, would not be denied and from the midway point on, Hlatswayo put the pedal to the metal and raked Medley with combinations, forcing a stoppage at 1:49 of the tenth frame. More...
