Ringside Boxing Report: Andre Ward vs. Shelby Pudwill

By Michael Worden September 14th, 2009 All Ringside Boxing

© Cate McKeating / Saddo Boxing

In front of a standing room only crowd on Saturday night at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA, WBC super middleweight number one contender Andre Ward, 20-0 (13), showed focus and determination by blasting his way to a third round TKO victory over Shelby Pudwill, 22-4-1 (9).

Ward controlled the action from the opening bell, utilizing his superior speed and technical abilities to neutralize Pudwill are every action.

Pudwill was unable to land any effective clean shots on Ward throughout the bout, further demonstrating the Oakland native’s defensive abilities alongside his devastating speed.

By the middle of round three, Ward's dominance was apparent and Pudwill was cut under his left eye by a flurry of shots as he found himself trapped against the ropes. More...

Boxing Preview: Andre Ward vs. Shelby Pudwill

By Michael Worden September 12th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

For those who have witnessed the rise of Oakland's super middleweight Andre Ward, 19-0 (12), from Olympic Gold Medallist to world class contender, it is easy to envision greatness and the possibility of world titles.

By gradually stepping up his level of competition with each bout, Ward has managed to build both a solid reputation and fan base.

In a division as stacked as the super middleweights, Ward has managed to garner enough acclaim from ringside observers to become the youngest of the top ten fighters at 168.

However, in order to continue this rise, he must once again take the next step up the ladder.

After his most recent bout, a defeat of the rugged Edison Miranda, Ward found himself in the middle of the unprecedented Six Six tournament that will solidify the true ruler of the division.

In his first bout of the tournament, Ward will face off against the hard punching WBA champion Mikkel Kessler, by far his toughest opponent to date. More...

Ex-World Boxing Champ James Toney Weighs In His Lightest Since 2003

By Boxing Press September 12th, 2009 All Press Releases

Meanness has never been a problem for James “Lights Out” Toney in the boxing ring. Leanness, on the other hand, has caused more headaches for the former IBF Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight champ than any of the eight opponents in his ten heavyweight bouts.

That albatross may be lifted off his shoulders tomorrow night when he takes his place inside the ropes against Matthew Greer in a scheduled 10-round Special Heavyweight Attraction at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA. More...

Al Bernstein On Boxing: It’s All In The Title

By Al Bernstein July 3rd, 2009 All Boxing Articles

When an athlete or any celebrity writes a book, an all important element is the title. And over the years, many projects have had titles that did not make the final cut.

I had a book project that had an original title that I thought was inspired--“My Life As Boxing’s Sex Symbol.” For some unfathomable reason, an editor ruled it out. Go figure.

Here are some other book titles that you will never see on the front of a book jacket.

Boxing Result: Toney Defeats Oquendo In California

By Richard Eberline December 14th, 2008 All Boxing Results

40 year old James Toney showed he still has what it takes to contend for a world title with a 12 round split decision win over Fres Oquendo last night at Morongo Casino in Cabazon, CA.

Toney showed flashes of his former brilliance with crisp combinations but Oquendo looked to stay away from the former three weight world champion in the early rounds, waiting for the aging Michigan man to eventually tire.

And tire he did, allowing Oquendo the chance to work in the later rounds, but the 35 year old Puerto Rican sabotaged his chances by losing a point in the eighth frame for low blows.

In the end, it was Toney who got the victory, edging out Oquendo to win the vacant IBA and WBO NABO titles to improve to 71-6-3 (43), while Oquendo falls to 29-5 (18).

On the undercard, super middle prospect Andre Ward, 17-0 (12), impressively stopped Mexico's Esteban Camou, 23-5 (19), in the third round and heavyweight Eddie Chambers, 33-1 (18), won his third in a row by outpointing Cisse Salif, 23-12-2 (21), over eight and heavyweight prospect Malik Scott, 32-0 (11), did the same against opponent Raphael Butler, 34-8 (27).

Boxing Preview: James Toney vs. Fres Oquendo

By Danny Wilson December 13th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at the Morongo Casino and Resort in Cabazon, CA, heavyweights James Toney and Fres Oqendo tangle in the main event for the IBA belt.

Former IBF Middle, Super Middle, Crusierweight Champion Toney, 70-6-3 (43), is now 40 years old and the magic that once thrilled audiences hasn't been seen in his gloves against a competitive opponent for quite some time now.

But if the Michigan native can even turn the clock back somewhat, he should be able to outbox opponent Oquendo, 29-4 (18), himself no spring chicken at 35.

Oquendo has won his last three contests but lost another aging warrior, Evanader Holyfield, a full two years ago. If the long armed Puerto Rican can gets his punches off first and keep the cagey Toney at the end of the jab, Oquendo will likely win this one on points but he outcome really depends on what Toney has left in the skills and stamina department.

On the undercard, promising super middle Andre Ward, 16-0 (11), meets Esteban Camou, 23-4 (19), over ten rounds.

Heavyweights Eddie Chambers, 32-1 (18), and Malik Scott, 31-0 (11), are also scheduled to appear on separate bouts.

Boxing Perspective: The Biggest Letdowns Of 2008

By Robert Brizel October 17th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

Miguel Angel Cotto
32-0 welterweight champ Cotto backed away from Margarito when the punishment became severe.

Amir Khan
Popular but overhyped Khan’s 18-0 lightweight record fell to Breidis Prescott in only 54 seconds. Britain had to relive Jerry Quarry vs. Jack Bodell all over again.

Marcos Ramirez
Ramirez blew a 25-0 record against Yuriorkis Gamboa and was knocked down twice in the second round and appeared to have been ‘quick counted’ out at nine by the Germans.

Andrey Tsurkan
Tsurkan could not get out of the twelfth round in his light middleweight ‘step up’ bout against unbeaten Alfredo Angulo and took a good pasting along the way.

First Arslan
Beaten in his native Germany, Arslan lost his WBA Cruiserweight title to veteran Guillermo Jones, getting stopped in the tenth round. More...
