Ringside Boxing Report: Martin Murray vs. Thomas Awinbono

Last night, at the Sutton Sports Centre in St. Helens, Merseyside, England, Oliver Harrison promoted a fight-night which would see nine all-action contests.

The headliner would see popular Martin Murray of St. Helens face Ghanaian boxer Thomas Awinbono in an eight round middleweight contest, his first since splitting with Steve Wood of VIP Promotions.

Looking in great physical shape - as ever - confident Murray entered the ring to huge support from the St. Helens fans. Murray dominated from the start, keeping centre of ring, he forced Awinbono to ‘edge’ around the ropes.

Landing some clubbing left punches to the head in the early rounds, Murray looks for the shots. Awinbono manages to land some decent shots of his own as he sneaks the right jab through the middle of Murray's guard.

Round three sees Murray sinking in some punishing body-shots that had his opponent cringing, sucking in air after each blow. It seems as if he can’t possibly take any more of the body-shots but he soaks them up and carries on - albeit tentatively at times. More...

Last night at the Doncaster Dome in Doncaster, England, Denis Hobson of Fight Academy hosted a night of boxing billed as "Demolition at the Dome2 - headlined by Graeme "Dezzie" Higginson's second defence of the British Masters Light Welterweight title against Stefy Bull. The event included a meal and was well-attended.

Supersonic Bull entered the ring first, with English Super Feather titlist Femi Fehintola holding one of Bull's two belts aloft. Dezzie Higginson approached the ring to big support from the crowds despite the fact he was from Blackburn and Bull was the homeboy!

A hard-fought contest with Bull getting off to a good start with long-reaching left and right shots. It gets a bit messy as both men do some holding-on and Referee Mickey Vann calls time to get the two fighters to clean it up.

A close-run contest in the early rounds but Bull looked to tire towards the end and Higginson piles on the pressure with Bull against the ropes. Higginson lands some solid body-punches which must sap the energy of the local man. More...

On Thursday night, PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson of First Team Promotions hosted their last ʽshowʼ of the season at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in West Midlands, England.

Popular West Bromwich boxer Young Mutley, headlined the show but there was a full undercard which made for another entertaining night of boxing.

Martin Gordon (Dudley) vs. Chris Thompson (Leeds)
4 x 2 Welterweight Contest

Despite landing a number of straight lefts and, sometimes - wild swinging left shots - the Dudley man had a tough contest against the taller Thompson and it seemed fair that it ended in a draw. At the end of the bout, the Leeds man asked that the contest be dedicated to his late grandparents. More...
