‘Joe Calzaghe’

Joe Calzaghe Knocked Out: Strictly Come Dancing

By Jane Warburton October 19th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

Sad news I’m afraid. Joe Calzaghe will no longer be gracing our screens on Saturday nights.

This weekend, the ‘Pride of Wales’ was ultimately voted off the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ show by the panel of judges, in fact it was a unanimous decision!

This weeks dance was the ‘Jive’ and - wearing bright red, shiny, satin shirt and dark trousers - Calzaghe kicked along to the up-tempo sounds of ‘Rock This Town’ alongside partner Kristina.

Grinning - he looked to be enjoying himself out on the dance floor. Bruce Forsyth congratulated them but thought they should have got Joe a boxing ring to dance in. “It might have helped,” Bruce offered. More...

British Boxing: Joe Calzaghe Fights On In “Strictly Come Dancing”

By Jane Warburton October 11th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

Joe Calzaghe has once again shunned defeat in the dancing stakes.

In the first episode of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, the former boxing champion and his lovely dance partner Kristina Rihanoff failed to impress the judging panel and were bottom of the leader board.

Last week, the dazzling duo were again at the bottom and guess what? Yes, this week they were still hugging the bottom of the board despite a marginal improvement.

Last week, Judge Craig sneered, “It had a lot more movement than a dead man dancing!” Undeterred - Joe was happy with his ’improvement,’ scoring 19 out of a possible 40, which is 3 up from last week!

This week, Joe's father and boxing coach, Enzo, stopped by to give his son some tips and words of encouragement during training, but couldn’t resist doing a little pad-work in between! More...

Boxing Great Joe Calzaghe On The Ropes In “Strictly Come Dancing”!

By Jane Warburton September 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Articles

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Joe Calzaghe may have retired the undefeated super middleweight and light heavyweight champion but it seems that his footwork on the dance floor doesn’t match up to that in the ring.

This weekend saw the start of BBC‘s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and Joe made his debut alongside professional dancer and blonde beauty Kristina Rihanoff.

“I never really danced before,” stated the Welsh Boxer, “so I was pretty nervous taking this up - probably more nervous than when I step in to the ring for a fight! More...

Boxing Perspective: British Fighters Turning Promoter

By Nick Chamberlain August 24th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

When Oscar De La Hoya walked away from the sport of boxing in April, 2009, he only walked away as a fighter, and in doing so left his own individual legacy he had forged over 17 years.

17 world champions had fallen before him, he had won 10 world titles in six different weight classes and had earned a huge - and I mean astronomical - amount of money; pay per view alone figures are reportedly estimated around $696 million.

Yes, it is safe to say that Oscar did all right for himself; in fact, it is fair to say he has probably generated more money than any other boxer in the history of the sport.

With the Golden Boy name still ringing out after all these years, we still think of Oscar whenever we hear it.

When you hear it now though, it could be because you are watching one of the fighters Golden Boy owns, from the super famous and well respected i.e. Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez; to the up and coming prospects i.e. Victor Ortiz, Danny Garcia or Erislandy Lara.

It could be because you are sat at a MMA event that Golden Boy collaborated on, or an article you might be reading in The Ring magazine or one of the many publications that Golden Boy own.

What Oscar has done has transcended way beyond the realms of boxer turned promoter. At one point, he was boxer and promoter, for his own fights, which always stuck me as humorous as no one stepped forward during the Oscar vs. Manny Pacquiao fight to stop it…well, that was everyone's boss in there…would you have wanted to? Boxing In Britain: Friday Night Results

By Ricky Jones August 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

There were two fight cards in the UK last night with former world champions Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe as promoters.

Hatton's bill took place at the Velodrome in his hometown of Manchester and featured a brace of six and four rounders.

The big name on the bill was that of ex-European, Commonwealth and British super bantam champion Michael Brodie, 35-3-2 (23), who had been out of the ring since losing a WBO

Returning as a super feather, the 35 year old local hero felt the ring rust acutely as he was dropped by opponent Mark Alexander, 8-4 (0), of London in the first and third frames before finding his rhythm to stop Alexander at 1:25 of the fourth after landing a perfect right hand. More...

Al Bernstein On Boxing: All Hail The King

By Al Bernstein July 8th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

A week and a half ago, I finally got a chance to see "King" Arthur Abraham fight in front of his loyal subjects in Germany.

It was a fun and exhilarating experience, but I realized while watching King Arthur beat a better than advertised Mahir Oral that the venue is not the deciding factor in Abraham’s success.

He might be unbeatable at this point in his career, and it’s not because of the “friendly” officiating by both judges and referees when working an Abraham fight in Germany.

Now, I fully understand that friendly officiating may have had a lot to do with his win over Edison Miranda a few years back in Germany. But, really, he fashioned that win because of his iron chin and iron will. Abraham’s jaw was broken early in the fight and round after round, the power punching Miranda was teeing off on Abraham’s jaw.

It was a grotesque sight. Somehow Abraham survived and won a decision primarily because a bucket of points were deducted from Miranda for low blows. Some deductions were warranted some not.

But, I also saw Abraham come to Florida to fight Miranda in Edison's home arena at the Hard Rock Casino, and watched him dismantle Miranda. He did it the same way he beat Oral a week and a half ago.

And this unique game plan he has is what makes him a potentially impossible opponent for…well, for everybody. More...

Boxing Perspective: Who Next For ‘The Cobra’?

By Paul Downey June 23rd, 2009 All Boxing Articles

Here we look at potential opponents for WBC Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch, assessing the box office potential and career enhancements that 'The Cobra' could gain from certain adversaries.

Bernard Hopkins: Light Heavyweight (49-5-1-1)

Possibly the biggest draw box office wise, also seems to be hardest to negotiate with money-wise for Froch so far, with Hopkins supposedly playing hard ball over the purse split.

This clash would also mean a step up in weight to 175lbs, but rumours in the press suggest 'The Executioner' is set to retire after not finding a suitable opponent since schooling Kelly Pavlik last October.

Chad Dawson: Light Heavyweight (28-0)

A real long shot again at light heavy, could attract some US television coverage after 'Bad' Chad's two victories over Antonio Tarver. Possibly not the fighter to capture the imagination of British audiences because of his technical style either.

An unlikely match-up, with Froch looking to unify the super middleweight division before looking at moving up in weight. More...

Boxing In Europe: Weekend Results

By Hermann Helmut February 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

There were two domestic title fights at Hall Omnisport in Herstal, Belgium on Saturday, with a pair of prospects rolling on to Belgian title victories.

Jean Pierre "Junior" Bauwens, 11-0 (7), of Ghent faced his first opponent with a winning record, Brussels based Tunisian Saber Gasmi, 8-6 (3), and made the best of it, forcing Gasmi to quit in the seventh to win the Belgian Lightweight title.

Liege bantamweight Stephane Jamoye, 11-0 (4), had a tougher assignment in the form of Israeli Elion Kedem, 9-2-3 (7), but pulled out a ten round unanimous decision to capture the vacant Belgian belt.

Jamoye will step up in competition again in May when he faces undefeated Thai WBC World Youth titlist Pungluang Sor Singyu. More...

Chad Dawson Applauds Retirement Of Boxing Legend Joe Calzaghe

By Boxing Press February 7th, 2009 All Press Releases

Undefeated two-time world light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson took time out of training for his world title defense rematch against Antonio Tarver to comment on the retirement of undefeated two-division world champion Joe Calzaghe of Wales.

“I applaud Joe’s decision," said Dawson." It’s obvious he and his family gave it a lot of thought. Timing is everything and to leave center stage at his peak is rare and certainly comparable to the retirements of Rocky Marciano and Jim Brown. Joe left on his own terms. What could be better? Boxing Perspective: Who Should Joe Calzaghe Fight Next?

By Danny Wilson January 8th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

After turning back most of his top level competition at super middleweight, longtime WBO Champion Joe Calzaghe left behind the 168 pound division in a much anticipated move to light heavyweight and has summarily dismissed legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones in 2008.

Standing now at 46-0 (32), the soon to be 37 year old "Welsh Wizard" is looking at a few remaining bouts before hanging up the gloves for good in the near future, possibly after making a run at Rocky Marciano's amazing 49-0 career mark.

But who should Calzaghe face in his next outing?

The top young gun in the division is undoubtedly the undefeated 26 year old southpaw Chad Dawson, but the IBF/IBO titlist is slated to meet Antonio Tarver in a rematch in March and won't be ready to step back in the ring again, assuming he gets past Tarver again, until September or October.

That could be too long for Calzaghe, who was last in action against Jones in November.

If Calzaghe continues his trend of fighting older foes, there's always Glen Johnson, the 40 year old ex-IBF titlist, but it wouldn't likely generate the kind of money that "Super Joe" is seeking in one of his final bouts. More...

Boxing In Germany: Erdei, Inkin Put WBO Belts At Risk January 10

By Hermann Helmut January 2nd, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Two WBO titlists will put their belts at risk on January 10 in Magdeburg, Germany as newly minted Dennis Inkin and longtime champ Zsolt Erdei see action on the bill.

Light heavy kingpin Erdei, 29-0 (17), has held the WBO crown for almost five years now and has successfully navigated his way through ten title defenses over that span of time.

The 34 year old "Firebird" has had a rocky reign, posting a majority decision and split decision over current WBA titlist Hugo Hernan Garay in two bouts, a split decision against Tito Mendoza and was veering very close to a loss before stopping ex-WBA titlist Mehdi Sahnoune in the final round of their contest.

Erdei has also made a lot of defenses against less that top flight competition and on January 10 will continue that tradition against Ukraine based Armenian Yuri Barashian, 25-4 (17).

29 year old southpaw Barashian is coming off a loss for the vacant WBA title challenge to cagey Argentine Garay in which he was soundly outboxed and widely outpointed.

Prior to that, Barashian won the European title by knocking out Germany's Thomas Ulrich but once past that victory, the resume of wins becomes very thin. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr

By Jim Everett November 11th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

© Jim Everett / Saddo Boxing

On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Joe Calzaghe kept his undefeated record intact by putting on a dominating performance against Roy Jones Jr.

Calzaghe, 46-0 (32), rose from the canvas in the first round and not only recovered but won every other round against Jones, 52-5 (38), in front of 14,000 fans by scores of 118-109 on all three of the judge's scorecards.

Before getting into the fight, I would like to paint an atmosphere picture for the readers to get an idea of the British presence in New York City. As I approached Madison Square Garden, walking down 33rd street and passing by a string of a few different bars and pubs, I could see that not only were most of them filled, but also people spilling into the streets, laughing, having fun and talking about how Calzaghe was going to win a victory against Jones. Boxing Result: Joe Calzaghe Defeats Roy Jones At Madison Square Garden

By Richard Eberline November 9th, 2008 All Boxing Results

In a battle of two of the most decorated fighters of the past two decades, Joe Calzaghe climbed off the canvas to hand Roy Jones a twelve round unanimous decision defeat at Madison Square Garden in New York last night.

Calzaghe was winning the first round off the southpaw jab when he crouched on the inside and was caught by a uppercut he never saw coming from Jones, falling to the canvas.

But the Welshman beat the count and resumed his pressure of Jones, who tried to maintain distance and catch Calzaghe coming in.

As the rounds wore on, Calzaghe's pressure forced Jones to become more and more defensive, content to cover up on the ropes and let the younger man rattle him with a two handed assault to the head and body.

It was clearly not the Roy Jones of his prime but the 39 year old Floridian did catch Calzaghe on occasion with a hard right uppercut or right cross, which the "Welsh Wizard" simply laughed off, either making faces at the former four weight world champion or improvising a fake "hurt fighter" shimmy that seemed to anger Jones. Boxing Spotlight: Roy Jones vs. Joe Calzaghe

By Ginamarie Russo November 8th, 2008 All Boxing Interviews

© Jim Everett / Saddo Boxing

Last week during the conference call hosted by Roy Jones Jr, I had asked him if he were to compare his upcoming fight with Joe Calzaghe to the Roman Coliseum, who would he be? The exotic animal or the gladiator and why?

"I am the gladiator in this fight," Jones stated, "I am the gladiator because the gladiator is the underdog, and people doubt me."

Wednesday, at the final presser in Manhattan, I had followed that up with Joe Calzaghe. I asked him "Joe, I asked Roy last week who he would be considered in this fight if it was during the Roman Coliseum days; the exotic animal or the gladiator - who would you be?"

Calzaghe stated, "I am the gladiator, " to which I replied, "No, Roy said he is the gladiator." Calzaghe laughed and shot back "Hey that's not fair, you gave him a choice, and I am stuck being the animal?" More...
