Yonnhy Perez made the most of his first world title fight by knocking off reigning IBF bantam titlist tonight at Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
The underdog coming into the challenge, Perez had previously pulled off an upset over Silence Mabuzza in South Africa earlier this year while Agbeko was coming off a stunning victory over heavily favored Vic Darchinyan.
The clash between Agbeko and Perez was expected to produce fireworks and the pair didn't disappoint as the artillery began to fly from the opening bell. More...

At Club Once Unidos in Mar del Plata, Argentina last night, multiple world title challenger Luis Alberto Lazarte won the South American Light Flyweight title by outpointing San Miguel's Gustavo Adrian Rodriguez, 14-9 (3), over twelve rounds in the third bout between the pair.
37 year old Mar del Plata man Lazarte, 42-9-1 (17), has held numerous regional belts and challenged for world titles at flyweight, light flyweight and minimumweight.
"El Mosquito" has only been stopped one in his career, by WBC Flyweight Champ Pongasaklek Wonjongkam in 2001, while four losses have been by split or majority decision but a full four losses have been by disqualification.
Also on the bill, 6 foot 6 inch tall Gonzalo Omar Basile, 39-4 (18), had to climb off the canvas in the second to drop and stop chinny banger Daniel Frank, 20-13-1 (20), of Brazil in the third to retain the WBO Latino Heavyweight crown. More...

The only genuine action this past weekend took place in Asia and we crack open the first results report of 2009 with a quick trip to the Pacifico in Yokahama, Japan where there were two world title fights on Saturday night.
Yusuke Kobori put his WBA Lightweight crown at risk for the first time since winning the belt with a third round stoppage of Jose Alfaro in May, but the Tokyo man wasn't ready for what challenger Paulus Moses brought to the table.
The 30 year old Namibian earned his stripes by winning the WBA Pan African and Intercontinental titles in 2006 but truly earned his "Hitman" nickname on Saturday by generally beating the champion to the punch over twelve tough rounds.
When the dust had settled, Moses took the WBA title by scores of 119-109 and 115-113 twice, keeping his perfect record intact to climb to 24-0 (17).
Former Japanese and OPBF Super Feather kingpin Kobori saw a 15 fight no loss streak go up in flames and the 27 year old sees his record drop to 23-3-1 (12).
In other action on the bill, another Tokyo resident fared better as Toshiaki Nishioka saw his status as WBC Interim Super Bantam Champ improve to the full WBC Champion with a dramatic 12th and final round stoppage of Mexico's Genaro Garcia. More...

It was a good weekend for the fights in Central and South America. The highlight of Friday night was Jorge Linares' WBA Super Feather title win in Panama City, already reported upon, but there were also two major title fights on Saturday in Mexico.
WBC Light Flyweight Chamion Edgar Sosa had a good challenge on his hands from tough Filipino southpaw Juanito Rubilar as the pair stood toe to toe and took turns lashing the other to head and body for six contentious rounds at Arena Mexico in Mexico City.
Neither man took a backward step in the dogfight but it wasn't until Sosa caught Rubilar in the seventh round with double left hook to the head then body that the challenger began to crack.
Rubilar withstood the followup blitz but by the end of the round he was getting hammered in the corner by the champion, prompting a referee stoppage at 2:54 of the frame.
Sosa solidifies his position as the top light flyweight in the world, improving to 34-5 (18), winning his 22nd consecutive bout and retaining his WBC title for the seventh time.
Rubilar drops to 46-11-7 (22), failing in his third bid for a full world title and sees a seven bout winning streak come to a close. More...

On June 18, in Tokyo, it was categorically confirmed that there will be two female boxing world championships on the same stage and on the same day, precisely on August 11, at Korakuen Hall of Tokyo, the mecca of Japanese Boxing since 1962, with capacity for over two thousand spectators.
This is the first championship of this sort in Japan sanctioned by the Japanese Boxing Commission (JBC), the organization that ended up approving female boxing recently in 2008. Last May 9, at Korakuen Hall, the historical first female boxing card was held, sanctioned by the JBC, with Fujin Raika defeating American fighter Natalie Brown by majority decision, 58-56, 58-57 and 58-58 in the six round main event. Yesterday at Differ Ariake in Tokyo Japan, championship boxing headlined the card as Jose “Quiebra Jicara” Alfaro 20-4 (18) made the first defense of his WBA Lightweight Title against Japanese native Yusuke Kobori 23-2-1 (12). The title defense had the feel of a coming out party for the newly crowned champion who had just won the vacant belt in Germany this past December via split decision over Thailand’s Prawet Singwancha.
Alfaro who was making only his third appearance outside of his native Nicaragua and his second outside of South America felt confident defending his WBA strap on the road leading up to this fight. After all, the 24 year-old had won the belt in Germany five months earlier and had beaten tough veteran DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley just a year earlier giving him little reason not to be confident.
Kobori the reigning Japanese Super Featherweight Champion who was on a 14 bout win streak and had never stepped inside a professional ring away from home in his 25 fight career had different plans for the Nicaraguan titlist.
As the fight began champion Jose Alfaro seemed to have things under control with a fairly good first round. In round two all seemed over but the celebrating when Alfaro dropped Kobori to the canvas for an eight count, the challenger, down but not out made it back to his feet and survived ready to fight on.
During round three the tables turned suddenly when Kobori landed a brutal left hook sending Alfaro back to the ropes stunned and defenseless. The referee soon stepped in, wisely saving the champion from any further punishment at 2:08 of round three. More...
