Boxing In Canada: Sonsona, Hernandez Draw For IBF Title, Molitor Wins

By Danny Wilson November 22nd, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Marvin Sonsona and Alejandro Hernandez fought to a draw over the vacant WBO super flyweight title.

Filipino southpaw Sonsona had won the belt from Jose Lopez in September but lost it on the scales Friday when he was 2.5 pounds over the super fly weight limit.

Mexico City based Hernandez came into the clash with the experience of having faced perhaps Argentina's top fighter, undefeated WBO flyweight champion Omar Andres Narvaez, in a big hearted but failed title bid.

The seasoned Hernandez fought Sonsona, just 19 years of age, to a standstill over the course of 12 difficult rounds and forced a 115-113, 113-115 and 114-114 draw. More...

Boxing In Canada: Lopez Loses WBO Belt, Molitor Defeats Ledesma

By Danny Wilson September 5th, 2009 All Boxing Results

There was a good fight card north of the border last night with a WBO title belt on the line as well as the continuing comeback of Canada's top boxer, Steve Molitor, at his home base of Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario.

Longtime flyweight contender Jose Lopez of Puerto Rico finally hit the jackpot in March of this year, outpointing Thailand's Pramuansak Posuwan to capture the vacant WBO super fly crown.

But making his first defense last night, the 37 year old from Trujilo Alto ran into trouble against WBO Oriental beltholder Marvin Sonsona.

The Filipino southpaw proved just too quick for the Puerto Rican vet and walked off with the WBO super fly trophy via a 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109 unanimous decision victory. More...

Boxing South Of The Border: Montiel, Soto, Lopez Win World Title Bouts

By Alejandro Tostado March 29th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at Plaza de Toros in Tijuana, Mexico, WBO Super Flyweight Champion Fernando Montiel, 39-2-1 (29), made the successful jump to bantamweight, capturing the interim WBO crown at 118 pounds by knocking out Argentina's Diego Oscar Silva, 24-2-3 (12), in the third round.

Montiel was in control the whole way, canvassing Silva in the second and at the start of the third before finishing the job at 2:24 of the third round.

In a WBC Super Feather title clash, reigning champion Humberto Soto, 47-7-2 (30), was dominant against challenger Antonio Davis, 26-5 (13), dropping the American in the first and twice in the fourth before forcing the bout to be stopped at 2:38 of the fourth frame when Davis could no longer defend himself. Boxing In Puerto Rico: Calderon Defeats Dieppa For WBO Crown

By Alejandro Tostado April 6th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There was a big card at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan last night with the headliner a hotly anticipated showdown between the top two light flyweights in Puerto Rico, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon and Nelson Dieppa. At stake was the WBO Light Flyweight title held by Calderon since jumping up from minimumweight last year.

37 year old Dieppa had held the title in the earlier part of the decade but had it removed by Mexican slugger Hugo Fidel Cazares in 2005 and failed a year later to reclaim the belt in a rematch. Since then the Vieques natives had gone 1-1 and was looking to right his flagging career with a win over Calderon.

But it was not in the cards last night for Dieppa as Calderon was on point from start to finish, beating the older man to the punch with his fast hands flowing from a southpaw stance. Utilizing cat-quick reflexes and superb footwork, Calderon never let Dieppa in the bout and cruised to a dominating 120-108 verdict on all three scorecards. More...
