‘Juan Carlos Gomez’

Last night at Hans Martin Schleyer Halle in Stuttgart, WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko retained his crown with a win over former WBC Cruiserweight titlist.
This was a messy bout, from start to finish, marred by many clinches, collisions, missed punches, and plain old awkwardness on the part of both fighters that just multiplied as they tried to put on a fight.
Gomez tried to back Klitschko up in the first and got in a shot or two but the big Ukrainian was the one doing the advancing by round's end. Gomez switched tactics in the second and became a bit more selective with his offense but still had trouble getting in more than a few punches.
Klitschko began to figure out Gomez and started hitting the target with long right hands and the lead left hook. Gomez became more aggressive at the start of the third until Klitschko put the Cuban on the defensive by coming forward. When Klitschko backed off, Gomez tried to push the pace again but the challenger was having trouble with the size and strength of Klitschko. More...

In only 10 days, WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko and no. 1 contender Juan Carlos Gomez will finally meet at Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany.
Gomez’ promoter Ahmet Öner thinks that this fight will help bringing heavyweight boxing back into the focus of public interest.
Question: Mr. Öner, what do you think about the upcoming fight?
Ahmet Öner: “It will be the best heavyweight fight in a long time. Finally one of the big champions, Vitali Klitschko, faces a real challenge in former cruiserweight titlist Juan Carlos Gomez. This will be no walk in the park for Vitali like his so called fight against [Sam] Peter. More...

11 days before facing WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in Stuttgart, “The Black Panther”, Juan Carlos Gomez, is very confident regarding his chances for the fight.
“I have never been this well prepared and this fired up for a fight”, states Gomez. “Vitali will be surprised to see what I am capable of. He thinks he can beat me up? I say it will be the other way around. I will destroy the legend of Vitali Klitschko.”
Asked why he will be victorious although all odds are against him at the moment, Gomez replies: “I am a natural born boxer. I have been in the ring since I was eight years old. I have been world cruiserweight champion for four years.
"I am more experienced than Vitali though I am younger and faster than him. And I know exactly what to do in the ring. I will be too fast and too much to handle for the robot. Of course, I know that he can punch – but he will not even see me and you cannot hit what you cannot see.” More...

Jeff Lampkin - IBF
22nd March 1990 - 27th July 1991
Jeff Lampkin won the IBF cruiserweight title when he stopped Glenn McCrory with a heavy left to the body in the third round when they met at the Leisure Centre in Gateshead on the 22nd March 1990.
Lampkin defended his title four months later at the Hilton Hotel in Saint Petersburg, Florida against South African Siza Makathini. The fight lasted eight rounds before Makathini was sent to the canvas by Lampkin’s now infamous left hook to the body and was unable to continue.
The IBF stripped Lampkin of the title in 1991. During my research the most stated reason for Lampkin being stripped of the title was his participation in an IBF bout in South Africa and that prompted the WBA and WBC to also withhold recognition of his title due to sporting sanctions against the country. However in all my research the only date I can find that he fought in South Africa was two years later, in 1993, against England’s Herbie Hide for the WBC heavyweight title. I can only surmise that the actual reason Lampkin was stripped of the title was that he fought a South African, not fought in South Africa as reports stated.
Magne Havnaa - WBO
17th May 1990 - 1st May 1992
After winning the WBO belt on the 17th May 1990 from Boone Pultz after a fifth round stoppage at the Nordjysk Messecenter in Aars, Denmark, Havnaa defended the title twice. The first, on the 8th December 1990 at the Aalborg Hallen in Aalborg, Denmark, he convincingly beat Argentine national champion Daniel Eduardo Neto to retain his crown.
Just two months later he beat Florida’s own NABF champion Tyrone Booze by a very close split decision.
Havnaa vacated the WBO title in 1992. More...

After many years as a nearly man, Panama's Guillermo Jones finally fulfilled his promise as he ripped the WBA Cruiserweight title from reigning champion Firat Arslan at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
Arslan began the bout applying the kind of pressure that had won him the title against Virgil Hill almost a year ago but the challenger used his long experience to minimize the impact of the champion's strategy.
Jones then began to masterfully outbox the German, hammering Arslan from angles and punishing the champion when Arslan did throw back return fire.
Arslan showed tremendous heart and toughness to keep going in the face of the heavy shelling and had success in spots but couldn't deal with the speed and accuracy of the much taller, long armed challenger, suffering cuts in the seventh.
By the tenth frame, Arslan had very little left while Jones seemed fresh and still in full command of his arsenal, forcing a stoppage at 2:33 of the frame More...

Two world title bouts and a world title eliminator are on tap tonight at Hamburg's Color Line Arena in one of the year's biggest German shows.
Top of the bill is WBA Cruiserweight Champion Firat Arslan's defense against slick challenger Guillermo Jones in what could very well turn out to be the most difficult fight of the champion's career.
37 year old southpaw Arslan will be giving away almost five inches in height to the six foot four inch challenger but the Suessen based pressure artist has sent the quartet of Darnell Wilson, Virgil Hill, Valery Brudov and Gregory Drozd all packing over the last two years and has proven to be a very motivated fighter in the clutch.
At 36, Jones, 35-3-2 (27), is not exactly young himself but the native Panamanian could very well be the best fighter over the last ten years not to have won a world title.
In a career that started in 1993 as a welterweight, Jones won regional Latin American belts until he earned a shot at reigning WBA Light Middleweight titlist Laurent Boudani in 1998. The bout was declared a draw and they did it again three months later with Boudani retaining by split decision.
Over the next three years, Jones fought at super middle and light heavy before going up to cruiserweight and challenging WBO Champion Johnny Nelson in 2002. Again a draw was declared and Jones took a year and a half off. More...
