Boxing Perspective: Observations On Hatton vs. Lazcano

By Jane Warburton June 5th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

Before the Hatton-Lazcano fight, I watched Lazcanoʼs previous two fights to gain an ʽideaʼ of Hattonʼs opponent. Those two fights suggested to me that Lazcano was a ʽslow-starterʼ with a good solid right punch, used the left-uppercut, threw few body-punches, but did include a couple of low ones, and clearly didnʼt like being on the receiving end of a body-punch!

But, he only ever suffered one knock-out, out of five losses, so he was obviously a durable guy, but even so I personally was expecting a quick end to the Hatton-Lazcano fight.

I met Lazcano in the pre-fight run-up and admitted I was disappointed to find that I really liked the guy! In fact, Iʼd watched a short ʼyoutubeʼ video footage from a few years back and noted how much he seemed to have changed since then.

The guy with the seemingly ʼin your faceʼ attitude was replaced by a very ʼthoughtful, spiritualʼ man - clearly ʼat peaceʼ with himself and very pleasant to be around. This, I think, continued right to the point of the fight. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Hatton v Lazcano

By Jane Warburton May 26th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

Saturday night, at a packed City of Manchester Stadium, Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton successfully defeated tough Mexican-American, “The Chosen-Juan” Lazcano in a twelve-round IBO Light Welterweight Title fight.

Lazcano enters the ring wearing bright red ‘matador-style’ clothing and a large red sombrero hat, walking alongside trainer Ronnie Shields.

Michael Buffer then introduces Hatton as “The Pride of Manchester “ and before the usual ‘Blue Moon’ entrance song, Rick had his own ‘special’ version of ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ which referred to his ‘Fatton’ Days! “They say he’s never seen a salad… he likes his pies and pasties… Hi Ho Ricky Hatton,” the crowd laughed at the lyrics. Then as the traditional ‘Blue Moon’ rings out - Hatton appears looking rather ‘bigger’ than usual, dressed in a padded suit - as ‘Fatman’. More...

Following the conclusion of the “Homecoming” fight between the victorious Ricky Hatton and challenger Juan Lazcano the media gathered for an official post-fight press conference.

First to answer questions from the press were the combatants from the co-feature title bout, Lovemore N’dou and Paulie Malignaggi. Speculation is that Malignaggi could be Ricky Hatton's next opponent having successfully defeated N’dou by split decision. More...

Another fight on the card that interested Ricky Hatton for more then one reason was the rematch between IBF title holder Paul “The Magic Man” Malignaggi 25-1 (5) and former titlist Lovemore “The Black Panther” N’Dou 46-10-1 (31). Malignaggi who won the title from Lovemore in June of 2007 was ordered to give N’Dou his mandated rematch after allowing him to defend the belt against Herman Ngoudjo in January of this year. Boxing Press Conference: “Homecoming” Hatton v Lazcano

Yesterday the City of Manchester Stadium, England, played host to the official press conference ahead of Saturday’s ‘Homecoming’ fight night.

Entering the stadium, I stopped by to see how the ‘pitch’ was progressing in preparation for the fight and with just two days to go, the huge structure and canopy that will protect the ring looks near completion. There are more red seats now on the floor area and not a blade of grass is visible under the protective boarding. It is indeed a fantastic sight!

Once inside the boardroom suite, media representatives gathered to await the arrival of boxers, trainers and promoters. On the top table sat Lovemore N’dou, Robert Diaz (Golden Boy), Matthew Hatton, Billy Graham, Ray Hatton, Frank Maloney, Ricky Hatton, Richard Schaeffer (Golden Boy), Juan Lazcano, Ronnie Shields, Paulie Malignaggi, Lou DiBella, Craig Watson and Joe Pennington. Ricky Hatton’s “Homecoming”

By Jane Warburton May 21st, 2008 All Boxing Articles

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

This Saturday, at the City of Manchester Stadium, England, Ricky “Hitman” Hatton returns to the ring after suffering his first ever defeat to Floyd Mayweather. “How or the way you bounce back from a defeat – that’s what matters,” said the Hitman. He was clearly upset for the disappointed fans that travelled to Las Vegas to see him and also for the thousands that couldn’t afford the trip across to America and had to watch at home.

Hatton is having what he calls his ‘Homecoming’ here at Manchester - keen to ‘put on a great show’ for the fans he adores. Even his entrance on the night is rumoured to be a ‘show-stopper!’ Fans have been speculating as to his entrance after rumours of a fun-element. “I reckon he might dress up as Elvis!” one fan suggested (knowing that the Hitman is a big Elvis fan). He’s sure to have a number of Elvis items having spent time in Vegas. “I think he’ll come in as Delroy Trotter!” another fan laughed.

Fighting at his beloved City of Manchester Stadium is a dream come true for Hatton, but one thing‘s for sure, it won’t matter what football team you support - there will be 55,000 singing ‘Blue Moon’ on Saturday night.

City of Manchester Stadium Prepares for “Homecoming”

Today, SaddoBoxing went to the City of Manchester Stadium, England, to see the progress of preparations for Saturday’s 'Homecoming' fight night between Ricky “Hitman” Hatton and Juan Lazcano - promoted by Frank Maloney in association with Punch Promotions and Golden Boy.

There's no denying - it is indeed a beautiful stadium. The pitch, now covered by the protective white boarding, was host to an 'army' of workmen building the huge steel structure and canopy that takes centre stage on Saturday night.

Ray Hatton could be seen gazing up at the 'structure'. Obviously delighted with the progress - he mentioned that it was 'something like 30 metres high' and that the canopy had been brought in from abroad - one of the biggest you can get. Workmen could be seen abseiling from the canopy as they checked over the steel columns. More...

Juan Lazcano: Audio Interview And Boxing Press Conference

In a build up to Saturday’s “Homecoming” featuring Ricky “Hitman” Hatton against Juan Lazcano, Frank Maloney hosted a meeting with the press to speak with Lazcano at the Smart ‘Village Hotel’, Ashton Moss, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester.

Having arrived into Manchester over the weekend, the Mexican (residing in California) looked to have ‘settled in’ as he chatted to the media in attendance. Relaxed and smiling, Lazcano came across as a very friendly and likeable guy.

“I have a great relationship with God,” Lazcano said thoughtfully and talked of his delight that this year his birthday fell on Easter. He feels ‘blessed for his opportunities in life’ and said he felt at peace. “I’ve already been a dead-man walking” he admits, “The Lord answered my prayers and now I’m pretty alive! I’m so humbled and so thankful. The best of Juan Lazcano will come out … whoever steps in the ring with me from now on.” More...

Hatton – Lazcano Media Week Gets Under Way

By Jane Warburton May 20th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Just days away from Ricky Hatton’s 'Homecoming' fight at the City of Manchester Stadium, Frank Maloney hosted a press-meet today with opponent - Juan Lazcano.

I have recently written an account of Lazcano’s last two fights against Vivian Harris and prior to that - against Manuel Garnica. But, today, I was lucky enough to meet the man in person and - darn it - he’s really nice!

Walking up to the new, very smart - Village Hotel at Ashton-under-Lyne, I wondered how the meeting with the 'Hispanic causing Panic!' would go. Greeting me at the doorway was our very own Editor - Curtis McCormick, who led me through to the press-room. More...

Boxing Analysis: Learning About Juan Lazcano

By Jane Warburton May 20th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

With less than a week to go until Ricky Hatton's 'Homecoming' at the City of Manchester Stadium, I'm trying to build a picture of the man who is to face the 'Hitman' on one of the biggest nights of the year!

The Mexican-born Juan Lazcano now fighting out of California has suffered two defeats in the past 10 years to ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris and Hatton victim - Jose Luis Castillo. A former lightweight world champion, Lazcano’s record now stands at 37 wins (27 by KO) 4 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw.

His last fight against Harris in a WBC Light-Welterweight Eliminator resulted in a point’s loss. Last week in a previous article, having admitted I hardly knew anything about Hatton’s next opponent - I watched the Lazcano - Harris eliminator match and gave my account of the fight (see link: http://www.saddoboxing.com/7273-juan-lazcano-2.html ).

Here is my brief account of another Lazcano bout from October 21, 2006 at the Don Haskins Center, El Paso, Texas, where he faced Mexican - Manuel Garnica in a 10-Round, WBA Junior Welterweight Eliminator.

Lazcano was off to a slow start and did very little in the opening round of the contest, hardly throwing a punch in the first two minutes of the frame. However, Garnica kept busy with long-reaching rights and lefts.

Round two was better for Lazcano, he was busier and landed a couple of solid rights but there was some grappling during this round.

In the third round Lazcano threw one or two left uppercuts, but was phased by a left shot from Garnica that landed to the body and he took a step back. It’s clear that Garnica is throwing more body-shots than Lazcano and he has another good round but Lazcano lands a solid right in the closing seconds of the frame. More...

Ricky Hatton Talks About Witter, Pacquiao, Malignaggi, Lazcano And More

By Jane Warburton May 16th, 2008 All Boxing Interviews

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Saddoboxing.com was fortunate to be sat with Ricky Hatton yesterday at the Phoenix Gym in Denton, Manchester, England as the IBO/Ring Magazine Light Welter Champion's showdown with Juan Lazcano is just a week away at City of Manchester Stadium on Saturday, May 24.

Sitting on the edge of the ring canvas with a mug of tea, the Hitman talked about the time he was at Old Trafford as a young man. “I remember going to Old Trafford to watch Benn-Eubank and thinking ‘I wish this would be me one day," he recalled. "There were 45,000 people at that fight and there will be more than 55,000 at my next fight - I just can’t comprehend it," the likable Mancunian shakes his head.

When reminded that Oscar de La Hoya’s ‘Homecoming’ attracted 30,000 people, Hatton sighed, ”It makes me feel very very proud. Even pop concerts don’t sell out that quick [55,000 in less than 24 hours] - but I’ve never seen myself as a ‘Star’.”

Regarding what drives him now - Hatton quickly replied that of course motivation for him isn’t the money. “Financially, I’ve done quite well for myself," he admitted. More...

Ricky Hatton Puts On Boxing Display At Phoenix Camp In Manchester

Any concerns that Ricky Hattonʼs health is a problem at the moment were dispelled today as members of the media were invited to a training session of 'The Hitman' at Billy ʽThe Preacherʼ Grahamʼs Training Camp in Denton, Manchester, England.

Looking relaxed, Hatton - wearing hooded sweatshirt over sweat-top over tshirt and shorts - took to the ring. Shadowboxing around the canvas, he looked ʽsharpʼ and ʽquickʼ on his feet.

Billy Graham then stepped in to the ring and donning the huge black body-belt, the trainer braced himself for another gruelling session with 'The Hitman'.

Proving heʼd not lost his usual cheeky charm - Hatton occasionally ʽshovesʼ Graham back against the ropes and even the serious looking ʽPreacherʼ canʼt help but laugh at the antics! More...

Yesterday, at Vermilion Cinnabar - the stylish, new, Thai influenced restaurant and bar in Manchester, England, Frank Maloney hosted a press conference to update media on the forthcoming fightnight which headlines Ricky Hatton and Juan Lazcano.

Despite other important press conferences held on the same day - it was a full-house at Manchester's trendy new venue.

In attendance were, Frank Maloney, Ricky Hatton, Ricky and Matthew's father/manager Ray Hatton, Hatton trainer Billy Graham, welterweights Matthew Hatton and Craig Watson as well as super bantams Danny Wallace and Mark Moran.

Boxing Analysis: Juan Lazcano

By Jane Warburton May 2nd, 2008 All Boxing Articles

At the end of this month, Ricky Hatton will take 'centre stage’ at his beloved Manchester City Football Ground when he faces the Mexican, but now residing in California, Juan Lazcano.

I’ve openly admitted to knowing very little about the ‘Hispanic causing Panic’ and so I have decided to ‘educate’ myself by firstly watching his fight against Vivian Harris.

The WBC Light Welterweight Title Eliminator between Juan Lazcano and Vivian Harris took place on February 10, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, and was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

With a record of 37 wins (27 by way of KO) and 3 losses - Lazcano has faced some ’notable’ boxers which include: Steve Johnston and Jose Luis Castillo.

The younger (by three years), taller, ‘Vicious Vivian Harris’ - formerly from Guyana and now living in New York, had changed trainers and now seemed settled with Lennox Blackmore. With a fight record of 27 wins (18 by KO) and 2 losses - Harris too has fought some tough boxers which include: Stevie Johnston, Carlos Maussa and Oktay Urkal.

Rounds one and two were surprisingly ’quiet’ on the part of Lazcano, in fact, I think he threw three punches in the opening minute of round one. Straight away, it’s clear that Harris is keeping distance between the two men and Lazcano teeters around the perimeter of the ring. More...
