Ringside Boxing Report: Lee Edwards vs. Lee Murtagh

Friday night at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, England, Glyn Rhodes hosted a four-contest fight-night, headlined by a ten-round light middleweight contest between local-man Lee "Errol" Edwards and Leeds boxer Lee Murtagh.

This was to be Edwards’s first defence of the British Masters Light Middleweight title he won defeating Alex Mattvienko in September.

Getting big support from the crowd, home-boy ‘Brown Sugar’ Edwards gets off to a good start against southpaw Murtagh. With legs stretched wide - giving him a low stance - Edwards strikes with straight lefts and rights and Murtagh’s right eye starts to swell already in the first round. Rhodes exaggerates the state of the eye - jibing from his corner position! More...

There might have been a super-fight in Las Vegas last night - but here in the UK in our own ʽVegasʼ of the North, (albeit mainly slot-machines taking pennies and twenty pences!), Blackpool Tower played host to another action-packed bill from promoter Steve Wood of VIP Boxing.

Local-lad Brian Rose was to top the bill - aptly named ʽBobbyʼs Birthday Boxing Bashʼ because it was trainer Bobby Rimmers birthday - but he had to bow out of his bout with a troublesome rib muscle, so it was left to 19 year old stable-mate Jack Arnfield to take the reigns.

Arnfield himself suffered changes of opponent, with the scheduled Matt Scriven pulling out at the last minute and leaving experienced Paul Royston of Sheffield to step in.

ʽGlitteringʼ Arnfield stepped in to the ring to huge support from the home-crowd. The taller, rangey Blackpool boxer striking with the straight left to dominate the Sheffield man over four rounds to secure a unanimous points decision. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Matt Attack

Sunday at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan , England, Steve Wood of VIP Promotions hosted another great afternoon of boxing. Billed as "Matt Attack" - the event headlined "Bolton's One Man Riot" - Alex Matvienko, as he faced Lee "Brown Sugar" Edwards of Sheffield for the vacant British Masters Light Middleweight Championship.

This was a close contest which saw both fighters land with body-shots that could be heard around ringside. Both men were wobbled early in the fight, but Matvienko looked to be suffering as the fight went on.

Putting on the pressure - Matvienko has Edwards on the ropes and follows with a left hook to the body which hurt Edwards in round two. Sustaining a cut in round four that was exaggerated by Glyn Rhodes's taunts from the opposing corner - only made things worse for the Bolton man.

In my opinion, Edwards looked the smoother of the two. The pace was relentless in this contest with both fighters scoring shots - Edwards throwing swinging left hooks to head and rights to the body, Matvienko digging in with some right body shots and straight-left punches. More...
