Boxing Result: Jon Thaxton Loses European Title In Norwich

By Jane Warburton March 1st, 2009 All Boxing Results

Last night at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich, England, Hennessy Sports promoted a fight night which was headlined by Jonathan Thaxton's defence of the European Lightweight title against Anthony Mezaache of France.

The fight starts but with 40 seconds of the first round remaining, Thaxton landed a right hook which seemed to land in slow-motion to the side of the Frenchman's head behind the ear and he falls slowly to the canvas.

He gets up for the count but his legs are like jelly! As Thaxton approaches, Mezaache then spits out the gumshield, walking unsteadily to his corner to retrieve it.

The referee deducts a point from the Frenchman and fighting continues, with Mezaache obviously well recovered from the knockdown. It’s a good round three from Mezaache but he’s untidy in round four and his mouth is gaping. Thaxton has a little nick under the left eye.

Thaxton seems to be missing a lot and is getting caught. A big right uppercut from Mezaache in the fifth causes Thaxton's knees to dip, but he didn’t touch the canvas. More...

By Jane Warburton December 16th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

There were two other ʽtitleʼ fights on Saturday night at the Brentwood Centre, Essex, as Brian Magee faced Stevie McGuire for the vacant British Super Middleweight belt and Lee Purdy met Peter McDonagh for the British Southern Area Light Welterweight crown.

Irish-born ʽConnemara Kidʼ McDonough - now residing in Bermondsey, London, has a 12-13 (2) record coming into the bout while his younger opponent, Lee ʽLights Outʼ Purdy, hails from Colchester and is undefeated - boasting an 8-0-1 (5) CV.

In round one, McDonagh circles his opponent, whipping out the left straight while Purdy looks on, seemingly waiting to counter with a big punch. McDonagh is accurate as he picks away at the face of Purdy - while the Colchester man is a little off-target, but starts to settle in towards the latter half of the first frame. More...

Stevie McGuire believes Brian Magee is ready for the taking in Saturday’s Vacant British Super-Middleweight Title showdown at the Brentwood Centre.

McGuire (Glenrothes, Scotland) might be the underdog for the fight against Magee (Belfast, Northern Ireland) but he is not lacking confidence after a two-week training camp in Cyprus to get ready for the biggest fight of his life.

Magee will be trying to become British champion at the third attempt after being stopped for the same belt by new WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch in 2006 and then held to a controversial draw with Tony Oakey for the British light-heavyweight belt last year.

Ringside Boxing Report: Albert Sosnowski vs. Danny Williams

By Jane Warburton November 11th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Saturday night at the famous York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London, Hennessy Promotions hosted a fight night which would headline the heavyweight clash between Danny Williams, of Brixton, London, and Albert Sosnowski of Brentwood, Essex.

British Champion Williams was scheduled to meet John McDermott in a rematch but McDermott pulled out with an injury a few weeks ago. Now Williams faced last-minute substitute, the Polish-born Sosnowski aka "The Dragon" in a non-title contest.

Round one gets off to a good start with Sosnowski looking surprisingly "nifty" for a heavyweight. Williams - the slower of the two - takes time to size-up his opponent. But keen to impress, Williams throws a big left rather too enthusiastically and it causes him to spin around on the spot.

In the first half minute of round two, Williams lands an uppercut and Sosnowski feels it. Backed up on the ropes, Williams increases the pressure and the Polish man hangs on. Williams is warned for punching back of head and the fight continues. The referee calls time while he reprimands Sosnowski's cornerman who, despite warnings, has continued to shout instruction to his charge in Polish. More...
