WBA King Khan Stops Judah To Annex IBF Light Welter Title

By Richard Eberline July 24th, 2011 All Boxing Results

British light welterweight Amir Khan added the IBF title to his growing trophy cabinet by stopping veteran Zab Judah last night at Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

From the start, Khan showed no respect for former unified welterweight champion Judah of Brooklyn, wasting very little time before launching right hand bombs at his shorter rival.

Judah threw very little during the first two rounds as Khan kept the southpaw on the defensive with long jabs and lunging right hands.

"Super Judah" did manage a few sharp counters that caused the sometimes wild Khan to become more careful but the 25 year old from Bolton, England put forth a much higher work rate.

No longer possessing the reflexes of his younger days, 33 year old Judah was getting caught flatfooted by Khan's jabs and at times by the right hands, and could not keep up with the pace of his antagonist. More...

Who Will Win Khan vs. Judah Unification Tonight In Vegas?

By Nick Chamberlain July 23rd, 2011 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, NV, WBA Super champion Amir Khan and IBF champion Zab Judah tangle in a hotly anticipated light welterweight unification clash.

Judah is currently on a five-fight win streak with recent victories over Ernest Johnson, Ubaldo Hernandez, Jose Armando Santa Cruz, Lucas Matthysse and Kaizer Mabuza.

Khan’s last five wins have been against opponents Paul McCloskey, Marcos Maidana, Paul Malignaggi, Dimitry Salita and Andrey Kotelnik.

If you were to switch the opponents around, the results would be the same except, I could see Judah struggling with Maidana. Then I thought, Khan would probably have his work cut out for him with Matthysse.

The problem here is that Judah, 41-6-0 with 28 KO’s, has always been frustrating to watch. In the respect that sometimes when you saw him, he could be masterfully good, with a skill set beyond belief, implemented by near light speed counters and footwork, with a good punch and a decent enough chin to boot. Boxing Result: Donaire KO’s Montiel In Las Vegas Shocker

By Richard Eberline February 21st, 2011 All Boxing Results

The year's most hotly anticipated clash at bantamweight turned out to be far less competitive than expected as the Philippine's Nonito Donaire blew out Fernando Montiel to capture the Mexican's WBC and WBO belts at Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas.

Montiel started off cautiously and that proved to be a mistake as Donaire hit the gas from the beginning and started landing big shots in the very first round.

It all started to fall apart for the champion in the second as Montiel was nailed to the floor by a perfect hook from Donaire. Montiel somehow managed to beat the count but the end was drawing near.

That came shortly after action resumed as Donaire wasted no time in battering Montiel to the canvas again, this time prompting referee Russell Mora to wave off the proceedings at 2:25 of the round. More...

Boxing Preview: Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire

By Richard Eberline February 18th, 2011 All Boxing Previews

A hotly anticipated clash at bantamweight takes place tonight as WBC/WBO champ Fernando Montiel puts his belts at risk against top flyweight Nonito Donaire this evening at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Casino.

Despite the general idea that this is a 50-50 fight or possibly that Donaire is the favorite, Montiel, 44-2-2 (34), has an enormous edge in title experience.

The 31 year old Mexican held the WBO flyweight, WBO super fly, WBO and WBC bantam belts over the course of 19 contests, going 17-2 (13), in those bouts, losing only to Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson by majority decision in 2003 and Jhonny Gonzalez by split decision in 2006.

Donaire, 25-1 (17), leaped into world class attention when he came down as NABF super fly champ to shockingly halt previously undefeated IBF/IBO flyweight champ Vic Darchinyan in 2007.

The 28 year old Filipino kept those belts over three defenses before capturing the Interim WBA super fly strap in 2009, retaining that once before moving to bantam in his most recent outing, a fourth round KO of iron-chinned former WBA 118 pound boss Volodymyr Sydorenko in December for the vacant WBC Continental Americas trophy. Last night at Las Vegas' famed Mandalay Bay Casino, WBA light welter champ Amir Khan proved he could hang in there with a big puncher as he fended off the challenge of Marcos Maidana over 12 hard fought rounds.

Khan surprised the heavy-handed body-puncher Maidana by going right after him once the fight started and amazingly downed the Argentine hard man with a body shot near the close of round one.

Maidana beat the count and began to push back but was getting outboxed badly by the fast-handed Khan. But the Englishman began to slow down as the bout wore on and Maidana picked up rounds behind an aggressive approach that wore on the champion.

Khan got his second wind in the eighth frame and outboxed the challenger before Maidana again took over in the tenth but the South American could not catch the champion fully. More...
