Boxing In Mexico: Saturday Night Results

The main event at El Palenque de la Feria in Tepic, Mexico featured a highly competitive WBO minimumweight title defense by Donnie Nietes.

The Filipino visitor was given all he could handle by Interim WBO titlist Manuel Vargas but after twelve difficult rounds were completed, wildly diverged scores were announced.

Vargas won one of the cards 116-112 while Nietes took the others 118-110 and 116-110 to win the split decision. Nietes improves to 25-1-3 (14), while Vargas goes to 26-4-1 (11).

Light middle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 40-0-1 (30), annihilated American Jason LeHoullier, 21-2-1 (8), in the first round to keep the WBO Latino belt. More...

 

 

Boxing In Mexico: Two Title Fight Bills On Tap Tonight

Two good fight cards tonight south of the border and we kick off this look with a big show at El Palenque de la Feria in Tepic.

Headlining is WBO minimumweight champ Donnie Nietes, 24-1-3 (14), who puts his belt at risk for the third time by facing Manuel Vargas, 26-3-1 (11).

Light middle prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39-0-1 (29), is back in action, facing Jason LeHoullier, 28-1-1 (8), for the WBO Latino strap.

Bantamweight Z Gorres, 29-2-2 (16), tangles with ex-WBO bantam king Cruz Carbajal, 29-16-2 (25), while longtime former WBO super flyweight champ Fernando Montiel, 39-2-1 (29), meets Alejandro Valdez, 21-3-2 (15), at bantam with both contests scheduled to go ten rounds. More...

 

 

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

At Club Once Unidos in Mar del Plata, Argentina last night, multiple world title challenger Luis Alberto Lazarte won the South American Light Flyweight title by outpointing San Miguel's Gustavo Adrian Rodriguez, 14-9 (3), over twelve rounds in the third bout between the pair.

37 year old Mar del Plata man Lazarte, 42-9-1 (17), has held numerous regional belts and challenged for world titles at flyweight, light flyweight and minimumweight.

"El Mosquito" has only been stopped one in his career, by WBC Flyweight Champ Pongasaklek Wonjongkam in 2001, while four losses have been by split or majority decision but a full four losses have been by disqualification.

Also on the bill, 6 foot 6 inch tall Gonzalo Omar Basile, 39-4 (18), had to climb off the canvas in the second to drop and stop chinny banger Daniel Frank, 20-13-1 (20), of Brazil in the third to retain the WBO Latino Heavyweight crown. More...

 

 

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

The biggest boxing card this weekend was actually on Thursday at the famed Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where three title fights took place.

The South American and WBO Latino Cruiserweight titles were fought over by Victor Emilio Ramirez, 13-1 (11), and Hector Ricardo Sotelo, 18-10-2 (6), with the 24 year old local man Ramirez, aka "El Tyson de Abasto", stopping crosstown rival and former Argentine Light Heavy Champ Sotelo in the second round.

There was a big unification showdown as well with local legend, WBA Female Super Bantam Marcela Eliana "El Tigresa" Acuna, 31-5 (16), winning her twelfth straight contest to rip the WBC belt away from Cordoba's Alejandra Marina Oliveras, 12-1-2 (4), in a hard fought ten round unanimous decision.

Yesica Yolanda Bopp, 7-0 (3), continued the Buenos Aires victory parade as she dropped Venezuelan visitor Ana Fernandez, 8-3 (5), in the third enroute to posting a wide points verdict after ten frames to secure the vacant WBA Female Light Flyweight title.

There was also action on Friday in Argentina with South American Light Middle Champ Javier Alberto Mamani, 35-7-1 (19), delighting his hometown fans with a ten round points win in a non-title bout against Cordoba man Valentin Antonio Ochoa, 19-10-1 (8), at General Guemes in Salta. More...
