Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City Miguel Cotto regained the WBO Welterweight Title by sending Michael Jennings to the canvas three times before the referee stopped the bout at 2:36 of round five.
After his loss to Margarito last year, Cotto 33-1 (27) was looking to regain not only his confidence but also a world title. Mentally, the confidence may have been the bigger challenge; coming back after a brutal loss, having HBO pass on broadcasting your fight and entering the ring at Madison Square Garden to a crowd of 11,120 fans instead of the sell-out crowds that you have grown accustomed.
Regardless of the challenge Cotto was ready and proved to himself and his fans that he is still a dominant force in the welterweight division.
In a tactical opening round Jennings back peddled while Cotto primarily used his jab throwing only a few combinations. More...

Last night at Madison Square Garden in New York, British man Michael Jennings faced his toughest challenge yet as he met Miguel Cotto for the WBO Welterweight title.
From the start, Jennings puts a lot of distance between himself and Cotto. Cotto stays in the middle of the ring while Jennings covers most of the canvas area keeping a couple of metres of ‘space’ between them and just dodging in with straight lefts and rights.
Cotto goes for the body in the closing minute of the round and tries for an uppercut which misses its mark. It’s a cautious first round. Southpaw Cotto lands a good left hook to the face of Jennings mid-way through the third. More...

The impossible may be possible tonight when Chorley, England's Michael Jennings meets former champion Miguel Cotto for the WBO Welterweight title at the Mecca of boxing, New York's Madison Square Garden.
For Jennings, it's a massive leap into the big time. For Cotto, it's a chance to get his career back on track after his first professional defeat against Antonio Margarito last July.
One year ago, things were going great for Cotto. Undefeated and looking like the next superstar in the sport, he was seen by many as the man to carry the welterweight division. More...

Nonito Donaire retained his position as the top flyweight in the world with a sixth round cuts stoppage against South African challenger Mortui Mthalane to keep the IBF and IBO titles at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV.
Donaire, 20-1 (13), won his 19th straight contest but it wasn't easy as opponent Mthalane came to fight and absorbed everything "The Filipino Flash" could offer and still kept coming, dishing out the leather himself at a respectable rate.
But a full-blooded right hand from Donaire produced a severe cut above the eye of Mthalane and the bout was stopped at 1:31 of the sixth frame, despite the protests of the South African battler.
On the undercard, Mexico's Jorge Arce, 51-4-1 (39), hammered out Isidro Garcia, 25-6-2 (8), with a bodyshot in the fourth after the pair engaged in a spirited slugfest from the opening bell.
With the win, Arce keeps his interim WBA Super Flyweight title and could possibly next face Australia's Vic Darchinyan in a massive unification bout sure to draw a lot of much needed attention to the 115 pound division.
In a bad blood grudge rematch, Julio Cesar Chavez, 38-0-1 (29), outpointed Matt Vanda, 39-8 (22), after ten rounds at light middle and celebrated light welter prospect Lamont Peterson, 26-0 (12), saw off Lanardo Tyner, 19-2 (11), by a wide points decision to win the vacant NABF title.
Middleweight Vanes Martirosyan, 22-0 (14), knocked out Charles Howe, 17-5-2 (9), in the first to keep an unblemished record.

Top Rank puts on a big show tonight at the Mandalay Bay in Vegas with IBF/IBO Flyweight Champion Nonito Donaire putting his belts at risk against South Africa's Moruti Mthalane as the headlining contest.
Donaire, 19-1 (12), rocketed to prominence last year when he won his titles by knocking out previously undefeated KO artist Vic Darchinyan in spectacular fashion. The 25 year old "Filipino Flash" followed that up with an eight round stoppage of Luis Maldonado in December to retain the IBF and IBO titles.
Facing Donaire tonight at Mandalay Bay will be South African and WBC International Flyweight titlist Mthalane, 22-1 (15), who brings a nine bout win streak into the ring.
This will be Mthalane's maiden voyage outside his home country but the man nicknamed "Babyface" decisively overcame seasoned Australian veteran Hussein Hussein in July to earn the shot against Donaire and has to be considered a legitimate threat.
There's a bevy of action on the undercard with popular interim WBA Super Flyweight titlist Jorge Arce, 50-4-1 (38), meeting former WBO Flyweight Champ Isidro Garcia, 25-5-2 (8), and a rematch between light middleweights Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 37-0-1 (29), and Matt Vanda, 39-7 (22).
Undefeated light middleweight Vanes Martirosyan, 21-0 (13), faces Charles Howe, 17-4-2 (9), and Lamont Peterson, 25-0 (12), squares off with Lanardo Tyner, 19-1 (11), for the interim NABF Light Welter crown.

Ulises Solis, 27-1-2 (20), led the way on a big card south of the border at Palenque De La Expo in Hermosillo, Mexico as the longtime IBF Light Flyweight Champion outpointed Filipino veteran Glenn Donaire, 17-4-1 (9), by wide margins to retain his crown for the seventh time.
Rising light middleweight star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 37-0-1 (29), was given all he could handle by American campaigner Matt Vanda, 38-7 (21), but managed to pull out a split decision verdict via wildly disparate scorecards.
Undefeated former WBA Light Flyweight kingpin Koki Kameda, 18-0 (12), of Japan stopped Marino Montiel, 30-13-1 (16), in two frames of a ten rounder at super flyweight and flyweight hot prospect Hernan "Tyson" Marquez, 19-0 (14), decisioned German Meraz, 17-10-1 (5), over eight rounds in a rematch.
Over his last 11 bouts, Marquez has only failed to win two of them early, both times facing Meraz.
Former two-time world title challenger at super bantam, Ricardo Castillo, 34-6 (23), returned from a failed bid at the Mexican title in May by stopping Guadalupe Arce, 2-36 (0), in the second.

There were two good fight cards in the Great White North last night, with IBF Super Bantam world titlist Steve Molitor leading the way at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario on an Allan Trembly/Orion Sports promotion.
Sarnia, Ontario's favorite son was facing perhaps his toughest challenge to date as a pro in the form of seasoned Mexican Fernando Beltran, Jr, who like Molitor is a quick southpaw and had given the world's top super bantam at the time, Joan Guzman, a difficult challenge three years ago.
From the start, the bout fell into a comfortable pattern for Molitor, who prefers to counterpunch his opponents rather than take the lead, as Beltran surged forward trying to inflict damage. More...
