Boxing Perspective: Amir Khan - The Hunter Becomes The Hunted

By Nick Chamberlain August 6th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

On Saturday, July 18, Amir Khan fulfilled a promise he made to himself and the nation when he beat Andreas Kotelnik over 12 rounds to become WBA Light Welterweight Champion. The journey to get there was not easy; by the same token it was not that hard either.

With his record now standing at 21-1 (15), Khan has some notable scalps on his record as Kotelnik joins the list along with Marco Antonio Barrera, Oisin Fagan, and Michael Gomez. The latter two are not exactly world class, but both hard veterans of the ring, they know their crafts very well and are good on a domestic and inter-continental level.

Barrera was well past his best when they fought in March of this year and the fight was stopped, quite controversially, after Barrera was cut in the first, which effectively blinded him in one eye.

The controversy happened when the doctor stopped it in the fifth and it went to the scorecards. Had he stopped it in any point through rounds 1-4, then it would have been deemed a No-Contest. Khan looked to be in control of this fight, but if the Barrera is saying he couldn't see, then surely it's an unfair contest.

Andreas Kotelnik was a tough, well-schooled, technical and precise counter puncher. Khan did not give him the opportunity to get his own punches off though and did a great job of covering up or using his nifty movement to skip out of the way, he did this impressively for the full 12 rounds, even when Kotelnik pushed him in the 11th and 12th rounds as he knew he had to secure the knockout.

Khan has always had his doubters and fair share of critics, who were rather pleased with themselves after a young undefeated Colombian came along by the name of Breidis Prescott, and knocked Khan out in 54 seconds of the first round at the MEN Arena in September, 2008.

After that defeat and the change of trainer and camp, Khan says it was the best thing that could have happened to him as a boxer, and you have to agree as a day before Khan took the world title belt off Kotelnik, Prescott suffered his first loss to Miguel Vazquez. More...

Boxing In Britain: Friday Night Results

By Ricky Jones March 28th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Two shows last night in the UK with the bigger bill taking place at the Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.

Local hero Ricky Burns was in action as the Commonwealth Super Feather Champ put his title belt at risk against former British Champion Michael Gomez in what had turned into a grudge match complete with pre-fight scrums in the street during the media build up.

While Gomez was at his intimidating best before the fight, it was Burns who was in the driver's seat once the bell rang, peppering the Mancunian with sharp counters off the jab.

At 31 years of age and four years past his prime, Gomez was a shadow of his former self but still managed to test Burns as the Scotsman lost a point for holding in the fifth while attempting to nullify Gomez's inside aggression. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Michael Gomez vs. Chris Brophy

Yesterday at the Municipal Hall in Colne, Lancashire, England, VIP Promotions' Steve Wood hosted an afternoon of boxing which saw the return of Irish-Mancunian former two-time British Super Featherweight Champion Michael Gomez.

Gomez was back out for the first time since his defeat to Bolton's Commonwealth Lightweight Champion Amir Khan in June of this year. Now under new trainer, Kevin Maree, a heavier Gomez took the fight against light middleweight Chris Brophy, with just a few days notice.

Entering the ring to huge support - as always - Gomez paced the ring back and forth like a man possessed as he waited to get going. As the bell signalled the start of this four round contest - it was clear that Gomez was going to go at Brophy like a bull at a gate. And the Welshman, now based in Preston, found himself on the canvas inside the first half minute of the opening round. More...

British Boxing: Rimmer - Gomez Split

By Jane Warburton September 24th, 2008 All Boxing Interviews

This evening, Bobby Rimmer informed SaddoBoxing that sadly, he and Michael Gomez have parted company. “It’s all very amicable,” Rimmer says, “and I wish Mike all the best - I really do”.

Irish-born Gomez, a two-time British Super Featherweight Champion, has been with Rimmer for 12 months and the two had struck up a good friendship. Always the character - Gomez has never been short on words. I saw him at Wigan last week when he was there to support stable-mate Jack Arnfield and Mike, as always, enjoyed a bit of banter with the media in attendance. For me - he is a ’likable rogue’.

In June of this year, Gomez was stopped in the fifth by Amir Khan when they fought for the Commonwealth Lightweight title but before being stopped, Gomez managed to ‘rattle’ the Bolton boxer. More...

British Boxing: Gomez And Rimmer Ready To Move Forward After Khan Defeat

On the heels of Amir Khan successfully defeating tough Irish-Mancunian Michael Gomez on Saturday night in a grueling Commonwealth Lightweight title clash at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena in England, SaddoBoxing asked trainer Bobby Rimmer this morning how he and Gomez were both feeling after the fight.

“I saw Mike on Sunday and he said he was alright, after the fight he said he felt fine but that Khan was just too good on the night," said Rimmer. "Like me, he’s disappointed….I don’t mean I’m disappointed with how he performed - just disappointed that we’d worked hard for 12 weeks and didn’t get the result we believed we’d get on the night. Boxing Perspective: Khan Stops Gomez In Birmingham

By Jane Warburton June 23rd, 2008 All Boxing Results

On Saturday night at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England, Amir Khan successfully defended his Commonwealth Lightweight title by stopping tough Irish-Mancunian Michael Gomez, in round five of a grueling contest.

But it was never going to be an ‘easy’ fight for Khan and Gomez clearly ‘rattled’ the Bolton man, who suffered a knockdown following a left hook from Gomez in round two. Despite being knocked down himself in round one, big-hearted Gomez continued to walk forward in his usual ‘bullish’ manner.

And in true ‘Rocky’ style - stood fast as he took a number of punches from the Champion, I think he would have stood there all night if the referee hadn’t stopped it - such is the ‘fighting-never give-up’ attitude of Gomez.

Afterward, a calm and thoughtful Gomez admitted to feeling a bit ‘sluggish’ and was disappointed with his performance, but gave huge credit to Khan - who Gomez said had ‘great hand-speed’ but felt that Amir was a ‘vulnerable’ fighter.

That seems the general feeling of those close to, and not so close, to Khan, that he still had things to learn before going for a world-title. More...

Boxing Result: Khan Tested By Gomez In Birmingham

By Ricky Jones June 22nd, 2008 All Boxing Results

Saturday night at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England, former British and WBU Super Feather Champ Michael Gomez gave Commonwealth Lightweight titlist Amir Khan a tremendous fight before being controversially stopped in the fifth round of a thrilling contest.

Gomez came out in his characteristically aggressive manner, surging forward behind the jab and forcing Khan onto the backfoot immediately. Khan attempted to pick off his opponent but Gomez bobbed and weaved his way inside, lashing the Bolton starlet to the body whenever close enough to do so.

Khan showed his quality early as well, dumping the Manchester hard man on the seat of his pants at the end of a multi-punch combination to the head at close quarters but Gomez was up at once, resuming his pressure as if the knockdown never happened.

The second frame saw Gomez cutting off the ring, forcing Khan to throw more punches in an attempt to stem the tide. As Gomez gained ground, he backed Khan onto the ropes and Amir let loose a blindingly fast flurry but the man born Michael Armstrong walked through it and unleashed a right hook, left hook combination to the head that made Khan go down on his knees from the force. Boxing Preview Analysis: Amir Khan vs. Michael Gomez

In a scrap I'm personally looking forward to, Bolton's Amir Khan defends his Commonwealth Lightweight belt against tough Mancunian Michael Gomez this Saturday night in Birmingham, England.

For Khan, this could be one of his last tests before hopefully being pitched in for a world title opportunity. For Gomez, this could be his last chance at the big time.

Champion Khan is unbeaten in 17 bouts with 13 knockouts. Now looking comfortable as he matures into the lightweight limit, Khan for me produced his most mature complete display last time out, stopping Dane Martin Kristjansen in seven rounds in April.

Gomez, although only 30, is the veteran in this bout. A professional now for 13 years, Gomez has spent the majority of his career at the super featherweight limit. More...

Yesterday, at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England, Amir Khan, 17-0 (13), came face-to-face with Michael Gomez, 35-8 (24), as they weighed in ahead of their Commonwealth Lightweight title contest tonight at the NIA.

First up was the challenger Gomez, a former British and WBU Super Featherweight Champion, who immediately stripped naked before stepping on to the scales. He neednʼt have worried as he made the weight at 9 stone 8 lb (134 lb).

Next up was the Champion, Khan, who - looking in fantastic physical condition - calmly took to the scales and weighed in half a pound under the limit. Both men were ʼtight-lippedʼ as they faced each other for the obligatory press photograph.

Khan remained cool and expressionless while Gomez couldnʼt suppress the ʽglintʼ in his eye and the wry smile that sneaked on to his lips in the closing seconds. More...

SaddoBoxing Exclusive Interview With Gomez Trainer Bobby Rimmer

This week it was announced that Michael Gomez will face Amir Khan on June 21 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. Gomez will be hoping for the best birthday present he could ask for - if he can successfully defeat the Bolton Boxer, as it is Gomez’s 31st birthday that same day.

Gomez was to face Peter McDonagh on May 23 at Robin Park, Wigan, but McDonagh pulled out of the contest.

Khan, who has split with trainer Oliver Harrison and is now fighting under new trainer - Dean Powell, will be looking for his 18th professional win.

SaddoBoxing spoke to Bobby Rimmer this morning to find out how the ‘camp’ is feeling about the news.

“This is sure to be a ‘beltin’ fight!,” enthused Rimmer, “Michael gets ‘written off’ by everyone but he’ll be the best opponent Amir Khan’s ever fought and it couldn’t come at a better time. More...

SaddoBoxing: How do you feel about your performance recently in beating iron-chinned light welter journeyman Baz Carey over six rounds?

Boxing Update: Michael Gomez Gets Rematch With Peter McDonagh May 23

By Jane Warburton April 4th, 2008 All Boxing Interviews

Click for larger image © Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Last night, trainer Bobby Rimmer confirmed to SaddoBoxing that former British Super Featherweight Champion Michael Gomez is to face Peter McDonagh in a re-match billed as ‘Redemption’.

The Irish Lightweight title fight promoted by Steve Woods / VIP Boxing, will be held at the Robin Park Arena, Wigan, England on May 23 - the eve of Ricky Hatton’s fight against Mexican-American Juan Lazcano.

Rimmer was obviously delighted with the news and said that Gomez was “over the moon” to be getting a second shot at McDonagh.

Controversy surrounded the first meeting of the two men when they fought for the Irish Lightweight title in Dublin in January 2006. Gomez seemed to stop fighting during the bout and suffered a fifth round stoppage to McDonagh and then retired from boxing.

In 2007, under new trainer Bobby Rimmer, Gomez took to the ring again and has gained re-newed confidence having won three out of his last four fights.

SaddoBoxing was at the characterful Rockingham Arms Hotel in Doncaster, England, yesterday for the official press conference previewing the Frank Maloney promoted fightnight "Nowhere to Run! Nowhere to Hide!" in which reigning champion Carl Johanneson and former champion Michael Gomez fight for the British Super Featherweight title at the Doncaster Dome on October 19.

Outside the hotel, a horse-drawn carriage awaited the two fighters for their first "face to face". A Maloney media release had announced the press conference as being an "Explosive Head-to-Head" and they weren't kidding!

As soon as Gomez, 34-7 (24), and Johanneson, 26-3 (18), got near each other in the carriage, sparks flew, and promoter Maloney and Gomez's trainer Bobby Rimmer did well to keep the two fighters from starting their fight 9 days early! More...
