This weekend, I hosted a pay per view telecast headlined by the WBA Interim Super Flyweight title match, featuring Nonito Donaire vs. Rafael Concepcion.
Everything that happened in the days before the match and in the first round suggested that Donaire, a rising star and potential superstar, was going to provide a dominant win that would further market himself.
Concepcion was rumored to be having terrible making weight, and, in fact came in a whopping 4 ½ pounds over the 115 pound limit. That did not bode well for his conditioning for the fight and it made an already motivated Donaire more angry and he vowed to beat Concepcion no matter what his weight.
Concepcion was fined part of his purse and Donaire received half that fine—but the Donaire camp did not demand that Concepcion try hard to make the 115 pounds. They were worried about a replay of the Joan Guzman-Nate Campbell fight of last year, when Guzman came in over the weight and tried to lose the weight, but was too weak to fight.
This pay per view had been set up a star vehicle for Donaire and Nonito and his management did not want his fight canceled.
The fight went on and true to his word, Donaire came out smoking. He was so dominant in the first two minutes that it looked like a monstrous mismatch. Conception had lost the year before to Jorge Arce in a war and Arce at that point had somewhat diminished skills.
If Donaire fought Arce he would be a prohibitive favorite. So, common sense told us that Concepcion was not in Donaire’s league—and round one was proving the point. More...

Timothy Bradley kept his WBO light welter title last night at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT after challenger Nate Campbell claimed he couldn't see after suffering a serious laceration above his left eye at the end of the third round.
The bout was entertaining during its short duration with Campbell looking to press the action and wear down the champion through a strategy of energy-sapping clinches, wrestling and short shots on the inside.
The much quicker Bradley wasn't playing along however, and threw punches in bunches, forcing Campbell to cover up and go defensive for much of the time. Seasoned vet Campbell made Bradley miss or largely nullified the effects of what did land by riding the shots but as each moment passed, the champion looked to be gaining more control of the bout.
The 25 year old champion was far more fluid in his movements than his 37 year old rival and the strength advantage enjoyed by the naturally larger Bradley also looked to be causing Campbell problems.
By the third, Bradley had Campbell on the ropes and was throwing all he had into the assaults. Near the end of the frame, an accidental clash of heads occurred shortly before Campbell backed away and motioned to the referee that he was cut just as the third round ended. More...

The big fight this weekend sees Nate Campbell stepping up to light welter tonight for a crack at Timothy Bradley's WBO belt at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA.
At 37 years of age, Campbell, 33-5-1 (25), has had a long and winding career with many ups and many downs. He comes into this bout after having won the two biggest fights of his career, a thrilling split decision over Juan Diaz for the IBF, WBO and WBA lightweight belts in March, 2008 and a hard fought majority decision against big punching Ali Funeka in February for what was to have been a lightweight title fight except Campbell couldn't make weight.
Having outgrown the 135 pound division, Campbell will try his hand at light welter and challenge Bradley, 24-0 (11), who won the WBC title in May, 2008, defended it against Edner Cherry before taking Kendall Holt's WBO strap by decision in April. More...

If the media members who participated in the Showtime Media Prediction Poll have called it correctly, Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley will successfully defend his WBO 140-pound title against former unified lightweight champ Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.
Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) of North Palm Springs, CA will take on Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs), of Jacksonville, FL in a “homecoming” fight this Saturday, Aug. 1, live on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT from The Show at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA just minutes from where the champ grew up. What took David Haye and his braintrust so long to figure out that he was a lot better off fighting Nikolai Valuev for a world title than he was fighting a Klitschko?
If David had come to this realization earlier he would have spared us the charade of pulling out of the Wladimir fight and then the phony negotiations to fight Vitali.
Haye is obviously able to fight at heavyweight and will beat many heavyweights, but he won’t beat the ones who are tall, can “fight tall”, and have pop in their punch.
David was hurt by Jean Mormeck in the cruiserweight division. If and when he is hit by a really good right hand by either Klitschko, the heavyweight dream will be ended. His chances against Wladimir are remotely better because he might hurt Wladimir with one of his own punches - but that’s a longshot.
All that having been said, there will be more money for him to make off this unfortunate episode with the Klitschko if he brings a heavyweight title into the match. That was always the case and it is astonishing to me that the Haye camp didn’t get that and insisted on trying for the Klitschkos first.
I think Haye is the favorite to beat Valuev. He is much quicker than Valuev, (everyone is much quicker than Valuev), will throw enough combinations to keep the giant off balance, and he may be able to take even the best shot of the light punching Valuev.
Valuev is capable of performances that define dreadful in a new way, as evidenced by his “win” over an ancient Evander Holyfield. That version of Valuev would be raked over the coals by Haye.
If Haye can wrest the title from Valuev, I would actually suggest a defense against someone before he tackles a Klitschko, and I suggest Wladimir as his choice. In that case, Haye’s trash talking and fight promotion will seem more credible. More...

Unbeaten WBO140-pound champion Timothy “Desert Storm’’ Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) and challenger and former unified lightweight belt-holder Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs) participated in a spirited conference call on Thursday to discuss their eagerly awaited showdown on Saturday, Aug. 1, live on Showtime (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
The Bradley-Campbell scheduled 12-rounder will follow a second 140-pound world title fight on Showtime Championship Boxing. In the first half of a world championship doubleheader, undefeated, No. 2-rated Devon Alexander “The Great’’ (18-0, 11 KOs) of St. Louis will face No. 3 Junior Witter (37-2-2, 22 KOs) of England for the WBC strap that Bradley voluntarily relinquished. WBC No. 1-ranked super lightweight Devon Alexander “The Great” will fight for the vacant WBC super lightweight championship against the former holder of that belt, Junior “The Hitter” Witter, in a tremendous co-feature on Saturday, Aug. 1 at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, Calif. on Showtime 9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast.
In an interesting twist, Witter lost this title on May 10, 2008, to undefeated Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs), who will defend his WBO 140-pound crown against former unified lightweight world champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs) in the main event on this card. KO losses don't come any more devastating than the one Ricky Hatton suffered against Manny Pacquiao and the question must now be asked: should "The Hitman" retire or keep going?
There doesn't seem to be any point in a rematch given Pacquiao's thorough dismantling of the British bulldog, unlike the Filipino's clashes with Mexican greats Eric Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera.
There seem to be three ways the Hatton camp can proceed from this point. Either pull the plug on a highly decorated 12 year pro career or continue to face world class opposition in America in search of more world titles or return to England and fight lesser opposition.
Retiring represents the least profitable option of course but Hatton's legacy, which saw Ricky only come up short against the two greatest fighters of his generation, would remain intact, something that could prove invaluable to any future career as a promoter or boxing commentator in the UK. Last night at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL, lightweight Nate Campbell held off a good challenge by South Africa's Ali Funeka to win a majority decision over twelve rounds to lead the way on a massive Don King promoted fight card.
Campbell's IBF, WBA and WBO titles were not on the line as he had been stripped of the belts the day before when he could not make the lightweight limit of 135 pounds.
Still showing surprising stamina at 36 years of age, Campbell put on a good effort but it was the knockdowns of Funeka in the second and eleventh rounds that would win him the contest after 12 competitive rounds.
The native Floridian won two of the cards by scores of 115-111 and 114-112 while Funeka managed to pull even on the third at 113-113.
Campbell moves to 33-5-1 (25) in his final bout at lightweight as he will now campaign at 140 pounds while Funeka sees a 16 bout win streak snapped and falls to 30-2-2 (25). More...
