Al Bernstein On Boxing: Loaded Schedule - Two Sleepers

By Al Bernstein September 11th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

The boxing schedule for the last quarter of the year is ridiculously good. Big matches abound, starting with next week’s Floyd Mayweather Jr’s comeback fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.

There is another mega fight in Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto, then three great matches in the Super Six World Boxing Classic and Paul Williams vs. Kelly Pavlik. Throw in Glen Johnson vs. Chad Dawson and you have an amazing schedule.

By the time we get to December, it would be understandable to see a dip in the boxing product. But, it is in that month that we may find two gems - two fights that might get a little less universal hype, but have almost can’t miss tags on them.

The first is December 5th when WBO Light Welter Champ Tim Bradley defends his title against Lamont Peterson. Between the two of them, they have not one single loss. They are both young and both in their primes. They are also both extraordinary boxers.

I have had the pleasure of announcing Bradley’s last several match-ups sand have seen his development as a young champion. Peterson, who survived a torturous childhood on the streets of Washington DC, is as skilled a fighter as you would ever see.

And reportedly, he recently gave Mayweather all he could handle in a now legendary sparring session in Las Vegas. This is an even match and having a real conviction on who will win is not an easy thing to do.

This fight has 12 rounds of really good action written all over it. I am not sure either man can knock the other out, and they they both have such good offense that they will throw a lot of punches and land a lot. More...

Al Bernstein On Boxing: Perception vs. Reality

By Al Bernstein May 26th, 2009 All Boxing Articles

SaddoBoxing has the honor of introducing Al Bernstein and his new exclusive column, "Al Bernstein On Boxing"!

Al is unquestionably the top television analyst in the sport today, appearing on Showtime since 2003 along with stints at ESPN and NBC and currently hosts the Internet's premier boxing channel on iBN Sports.

A winner of the Sam Taub Award for excellence in boxing broadcast journalism, Al is also a recording artist and has appeared on the stages of major casinos and resorts across the U.S.

In addition, Al authored the book "Boxing For Beginners", has written for The Ring and Boxing Illustrated and held the position of Managing Editor for Lerner Newspapers in Chicago.

We now live in a world where perception is much more powerful than reality. We see it in the political arena where spin doctoring by those in office and bias driven reporting by the media often colors public opinion more than actual facts…if we can still ascertain actual facts in that arena.

In America, many years ago there was a television police drama called Dragnet. In just about every episode the chief investigator Sgt. Joe Friday would interrupt a meandering witness by saying to them, “Just the facts.” Anyone who is truly involved with the sport of boxing, as a fan, a person who covers it, or someone working in the industry, would probably like to scream that Sgt. Friday phrase at the top of their lungs, to try and make some people actually care about the facts. More...

Boxing Result: Williams Dominates Wright, Arreola Stops McCline

By Richard Eberline April 12th, 2009 All Boxing Results

Winky Wright failed to overcome both his opponent and a two year layoff as the 37 year old former IBF light middle champion was handled by ex-WBO welter kingpin Paul Williams over 12 rounds at middleweight.

The pair exchanged leather last night at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas and it was clear from the start that Wright's once highly vaunted defense was not as sharp as it once was.

Williams had little difficulty finding the target against the once elusive Wright in the early going and was far busier than the older man. Wright began to get the timing of Williams by the middle rounds, picking off punches on his gloves and responding with an accurate offense of his own. More...

Former longtime world light middleweight champion Winky Wright dusts off the gloves for the first time in nearly two years when the 38 year old southpaw faces fellow lefty and ex-WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams tonight over 12 rounds at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Wright, 51-4-1 (25), has a resume to rival anyone in boxing today, winning his first title belt at light middle 13 years ago and since that time engaging in 14 major world title bouts, winning all but two majority decision losses and a controversial draw.

Throghout his long career, defensive master Wright has specialized in making opponents look bad in defeat and has had a tough time getting meaningful fights during times that he hasn't held a world title. More...

Boxing In America: Weekend Results

By Richard Eberline November 30th, 2008 All Boxing Results

WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams stepped up to light middle and caged the vacant WBO belt by stopping former three time 154 pound world titlist Verno Phillips in the eighth round at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, CA in the highest profile bout in America this weekend.

Williams overcame a bad cut from a headclash early on and used his massive height and reach advantage to good effect, keeping the much older Phillips at bay with hard shots to the body and head.

It was the constant body shots which seemed to take their toll on the former champion as he began to slow down later in the bout but Phillips also didn't have the power to trouble his far taller opponent despite not having much difficulty in hitting Williams when he did throw punches.

By the eighth round, Phillips was getting hurt and the bout was called to a halt before the ninth frame could begin to keep the 39 year old from further damage.

Williams wins the WBO Light Middle title, improving to 36-1 (27), while Phillips drops to 42-11-1 (21) after a brave performance in what could be the last big fight of his long career. More...

Boxing Preview: Verno Phillips vs. Paul Williams

By Richard Eberline November 29th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Tonight at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, a contest for the vacant WBO Light Middleweight title takes place between Verno Phillips and Paul Williams.

Phillips, 42-10-1 (21), resuscitated his career in March by defeating Cory Spinks for the IBF 154 pound belt, a title the Belize born Denver resident held previously in 2004 in addition to the WBO Light Middle crown Phillips owned during 1994-5.

Facing Phillips will be WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams, 35-1 (26), a 6-1 southpaw who will tower over Phillips with a five inch height advantage and an amazing 13 inch edge in reach.

This bout is a big ask for the three time light middleweight champion at 39 years of age but if Phillips can slip the long jab of Williams and make the welterweight titlist engage in a draining fight on the inside, he could pull off the upset.

The incentive, aside of course from winning an additional world title, for Williams is liberation from the welterweight weight class and it's confining 147 pound limit, no easy task as the massive South Carolina native begins to fill out at 27 years of age.

A good bout on the undercard features America's number one heavyweight contender, big punching local man Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola, 25-0 (22), who meets Houston based Travis "Freight Train" Walker, 28-1-1 (22), in an IBF title eliminator that is also for the NABF and WBC Continental Americas belts.
