British Boxing: Broadhurst Wins Commonwealth Title In Birmingham, Buckley Wins In 300th Bout

By Ricky Jones November 1st, 2008 All Boxing Results

Last night at Aston Villa Leisure Centre in Birmingham, England, Don Broadhurst, 9-0 (1), outpointed Ghanaian novice Isaac Quaye, 1-2-1 (0), over twelve rounds to win the vacant Commonwealth Super Flyweight title.

Popular local middleweight Matthew Macklin, 23-2 (16), picked up a good win by decisioning Geard Ajetovic, 16-4-1 (8), in a ten rounder while super feather Stephen Foster, 24-2-1 (16), did the same in six against journeyman Jason Nesbitt, 7-77-2 (5), while fighting at welterweight.

Boxing's most experienced fighter, Peter "The Professor" Buckley, 32-256-12 (8), finally hung up the gloves after participating in his 300th contest and capped off his career with the first win in five years by outpointing Matin Mohammed, 0-1-1 (0), in a four rounder.

39 year old Buckley has fought the top men in Britain since turning pro as a featherweight on October 4, 1989 with a draw against Alan Baldwin at the Colosseum in Stafford, England.

An unbelievably active fighter, Buckley's record stood at 10-5-3 (1), after his first full year, 18 contests over twelve months! More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Rob Hunt vs. Jason Nesbitt

Last night at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England, First Team Promotions main men PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson staged a fight night which was headlined by Rob Hunt of Stafford, who faced experienced Jason Nesbitt of Birmingham in an eight round welterweight contest.

Not the tidiest of fights - with Hunt getting a point deducted for holding and which he continues to do throughout the contest. There's a scrap at the end of round six as both men slug it out in the corner just as the bell sounds to end the frame. But, Hunt's long-reaching right punch and right hooks to body gave him the points win he wanted and ensure him a title shot early next year.

Hunt's record now stands at 11-0 (1). More...

Last night at the Doncaster Dome in Doncaster, England, Denis Hobson of Fight Academy hosted a night of boxing billed as "Demolition at the Dome2 - headlined by Graeme "Dezzie" Higginson's second defence of the British Masters Light Welterweight title against Stefy Bull. The event included a meal and was well-attended.

Supersonic Bull entered the ring first, with English Super Feather titlist Femi Fehintola holding one of Bull's two belts aloft. Dezzie Higginson approached the ring to big support from the crowds despite the fact he was from Blackburn and Bull was the homeboy!

A hard-fought contest with Bull getting off to a good start with long-reaching left and right shots. It gets a bit messy as both men do some holding-on and Referee Mickey Vann calls time to get the two fighters to clean it up.

A close-run contest in the early rounds but Bull looked to tire towards the end and Higginson piles on the pressure with Bull against the ropes. Higginson lands some solid body-punches which must sap the energy of the local man. More...

Friday night at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, in West Midlands, England, First Team Promotions (PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson) staged another entertaining night of boxing.

First to fight were likeable Keiron Gray from the Wednesbury Boxing Academy against late opponent - Davey Jones of Shinfield's Gym in a four round middleweight contest. ‘Slammer’ Gray of Telford had a tough test against the Lincolnshire man who landed some good right shots through the defence of Gray. Mid-way through round three and Jones lands a right hook but Gray returns with a solid body punch.

A good win for Gray, 40-37, who notches up his third win since turning pro in May of this year.

Next up was Wolverhampton southpaw Russ Colley, as he faced Preston-born Chris Brophy in a six round light middleweight contest. Colley, aka ’Rooster’, dominated the fight and despite being an inch shorter than his opponent, seemed to ‘tower’ over Brophy - throwing numerous long-reaching ‘rights’. There was big support for Colley from the West Midlands crowd as chants of ‘Rooster, Rooster’ rang out around the ‘Civic’. More...

On Thursday night, PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson of First Team Promotions hosted their last ʽshowʼ of the season at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in West Midlands, England.

Popular West Bromwich boxer Young Mutley, headlined the show but there was a full undercard which made for another entertaining night of boxing.

Martin Gordon (Dudley) vs. Chris Thompson (Leeds)
4 x 2 Welterweight Contest

Despite landing a number of straight lefts and, sometimes - wild swinging left shots - the Dudley man had a tough contest against the taller Thompson and it seemed fair that it ended in a draw. At the end of the bout, the Leeds man asked that the contest be dedicated to his late grandparents. More...

Friday night at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England also saw an exciting and entertaining undercard.

Former IBO Champion Brian Magee of Belfast faced Simeon Cover of Worksop in a six round super middleweight contest. Cover, of the Ingle's stable, has the trademark ‘fencing style’, but after a steady start by both men, Cover went down on the canvas after a right to the body.

A big left punch from Magee in the opening seconds of round four sends Cover to the floor again. Getting up, Cover takes an onslaught from Magee and he almost ends up through the ropes. Seconds later, Cover falls back again and - shaking his head at his corner - is stopped by the referee.

Magee wins by TKO round four to improve to 31-3-1 (21) while Cover drops to 16-41-2 (4). More...
