Hennessy Boxing: No Pain, No Gain For Purdy

By Boxing Press February 6th, 2009 All Press Releases

Colchester’s Lee “Lights Out” Purdy spent Christmas licking his wounds following the first defeat of his career in December. Having remained unbeaten in his first ten starts, Purdy lost a thrilling Southern Area Light Welterweight title scrap with seasoned campaigner Peter McDonagh live on ITV4.

The fact that the high octane ten rounder was a domestic thriller did nothing to ease his disappointment. More...

There were two other ʽtitleʼ fights on Saturday night at the Brentwood Centre, Essex, as Brian Magee faced Stevie McGuire for the vacant British Super Middleweight belt and Lee Purdy met Peter McDonagh for the British Southern Area Light Welterweight crown.

Irish-born ʽConnemara Kidʼ McDonough - now residing in Bermondsey, London, has a 12-13 (2) record coming into the bout while his younger opponent, Lee ʽLights Outʼ Purdy, hails from Colchester and is undefeated - boasting an 8-0-1 (5) CV.

In round one, McDonagh circles his opponent, whipping out the left straight while Purdy looks on, seemingly waiting to counter with a big punch. McDonagh is accurate as he picks away at the face of Purdy - while the Colchester man is a little off-target, but starts to settle in towards the latter half of the first frame. More...

By Boxing Press December 11th, 2008 All Press Releases

Brian Magee is looking to revive his career by making sure Irish eyes are smiling at the end of his British Super-Middleweight Title showdown against Stevie McGuire at the Brentwood Centre on Saturday, 13th December 2008.

The Belfast boxer has his third crack at becoming British champion after losing to newly crowned WBC world champion Carl Froch in 2006 and then being held to a controversial draw with Tony Oakey last year. More...

Boxing Info: Stevie McGuire - Brian Magee

By Boxing Press December 10th, 2008 All Press Releases

Stevie McGuire believes Brian Magee is ready for the taking in Saturday’s Vacant British Super-Middleweight Title showdown at the Brentwood Centre.

McGuire (Glenrothes, Scotland) might be the underdog for the fight against Magee (Belfast, Northern Ireland) but he is not lacking confidence after a two-week training camp in Cyprus to get ready for the biggest fight of his life.

Magee will be trying to become British champion at the third attempt after being stopped for the same belt by new WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch in 2006 and then held to a controversial draw with Tony Oakey for the British light-heavyweight belt last year.

But McGuire is confident of improving his 15-fight unbeaten record on the Hennessy Sports show that will be shown live on ITV4 from 8.40pm. More...

Boxing In Ireland: Murray, Rock, Dunne Victorious In Dublin

By Ricky Jones July 13th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Brian Peters Promotions put on a big show last night at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland and the big three of Andrew Murray, Jim Rock and Bernard Dunne all won their contests on a bill that also saw Darren Corbett and Oisin Fagan enter the winner's circle as well.

Murray, 13-0 (6), already the Irish Light Welter titlist, dropped down to true lightweight for the first time in his career and faced Peter McDonagh, 11-13 (2), a London based Galway man long on useful experience despite the humble won - loss record.

McDonagh had won the Irish title over two years ago in a notorious contest when opponent Michael Gomez simply stopped fighting in the fifth round and was coming off a competitive performance in Italy this past February against European Union Light Welter Champ Giuseppe Lauri before bowing out with an injury in the sixth.

But none of that counted last night at National Stadium as Murray used his edge in youth and quickness to rattle off sharp punch sequence and win most of the rounds. More...

Brian Peters Boxing: McDonagh vs. Murray: A Lightweight Affair Not For The Faint Hearted

By Boxing Press July 2nd, 2008 All Press Releases

He won’t have Uri Geller in his corner this time, but Peter McDonagh believes it will still be a case of mind over matter when he defends his Irish Lightweight title against Andrew Murray on the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the National Stadium, Dublin on July 12, 2008.

While their ten round bout is one of two Irish title fights on the undercard to Bernard Dunne’s clash with Argentina’s Damian Marchiano, McDonagh is hoping to steal the show by ruining Murray’s perfect record. More...

Brian Peters Boxing: Dunne To Face Marchiano July 12

By Boxing Press June 23rd, 2008 All Press Releases

Argentina’s Damian Marchiano has been confirmed as Bernard Dunne’s next opponent when they clash at the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the National Stadium, Dublin on July 12.

Their ten round contest will headline a seven fight card that features two Irish title bouts.

Marchiano is coming off an unsuccessful challenge in South Africa for Silence Mabuza’s IBO title and he knows a second successive defeat is not a desirable career option. "I know I must win this fight but I am confident that I can beat Dunne even in his hometown," said the 28-year-old from Buenos Aires.

"We are working on a strategy for the fight and I think it will surprise Bernard. I don’t think he has met someone as physically strong or courageous as me. I love to fight up close and have a real war and I have a heart as strong as a lion so Bernard better be well prepared because I will make it a very hard night for him." More...

Boxing Update: Michael Gomez Gets Rematch With Peter McDonagh May 23

Last night, trainer Bobby Rimmer confirmed to SaddoBoxing that former British Super Featherweight Champion Michael Gomez is to face Peter McDonagh in a re-match billed as ‘Redemption’.

The Irish Lightweight title fight promoted by Steve Woods / VIP Boxing, will be held at the Robin Park Arena, Wigan, England on May 23 - the eve of Ricky Hatton’s fight against Mexican-American Juan Lazcano.

Rimmer was obviously delighted with the news and said that Gomez was “over the moon” to be getting a second shot at McDonagh.

Controversy surrounded the first meeting of the two men when they fought for the Irish Lightweight title in Dublin in January 2006. Gomez seemed to stop fighting during the bout and suffered a fifth round stoppage to McDonagh and then retired from boxing.

In 2007, under new trainer Bobby Rimmer, Gomez took to the ring again and has gained re-newed confidence having won three out of his last four fights.
