Boxing In Mexico: Garcia, Alvarez Win Title Bouts

By Alejandro Tostado April 12th, 2009 All Boxing Results

There were two good cards last night in Mexico with the bill at Estadio Arturo C. Nahl in La Paz featuring an IBF Minimumweight title clash between Raul Garcia and Ronald Barrera.

Undefeated Garcia had already defeated Barrera once by unanimous decision as the pair met in February of last year during an IBF title eliminator and on the strength of that victory, Garcia captured the IBF crown with a split decision over Florante Condes last June.

Two dominant defenses later against Jose Luis Varela and Garcia, 26-0-1 (16), showed just how much better he's become by stopping Barrera, 26-6-1 (16), at 2:26 of the sixth round last night. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Sosa Retains WBC Crown In Tamaulipas

By Alejandro Tostado April 5th, 2009 All Press Releases

Last night at Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas, Mexico, WBC Light Flyweight Champion Edgar Sosa continued his reign with a fourth round TKO of challenger Pornsawan Porpramook.

Longtime PABA minimumweight champion and two-time world title challenger Porpramook had never been stopped before but the 30 year old Thai could not withstand the punishment doled out by the hard charging Mexico City resident Sosa.

Sosa sees his record to 35-5 (19), retaining the WBC belt for the eighth time and could be in line to face IBF Champion Ulises Solis, who holds two razor thin wins over Sosa in 2000 and 2003, should Solis defeat Sosa victim Brian Viloria later this month. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Saturday Night Preview

By Alejandro Tostado April 4th, 2009 All Boxing Previews

Two good fight cards in Mexico tonight with the top bill taking place at Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas where Edgar Sosa will defend his WBC Light Flyweight crown.

Sosa, 34-5 (18), has been on fire since 2003, winning 22 straight contests and picking up the WBC belt against Brian Viloria two years ago by majority decision.

The Mexico City man has retained the title seven times and tonight will face off with longtime former PABA Minimumweight beltholder Pornsawan Porpramook, 21-2 (16), who has also fought under the name Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym.

Porpramook, of Sa Kaeo, Thailand, has only come up short when failing to unseat WBO Minimumweight Champ Donnie Nietes in 2007 and WBC King Oleydong Sithsamerchai last year. More...

Boxing South Of The Border: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado December 14th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There was a smattering of action below the Rio Grande this weekend and we start off in Mexico where there was a battle for the IBF Minimumweight crown at Loreto in Baja California Sur last night.

Local man Raul Garcia, 25-0-1 (16), walked into the arena as reigning champion and after twelve rounds of combat with challenger Jose Luis Varela, 15-6 (7), of Colombia, still held the title, outpointing the former WBA Fedebol kingpin by wide margins in a rematch.

The two originally squared off in September with Garcia also winning that bout and "Rayito" has now retained the IBF belt on two occasions. Varela has lost his last three bouts, each in world title challenges.

Chief support on the bill was provided by San Antonio, Texas based lightweight Juan Castaneda, 15-1 (12), who dropped Los Mochis battler Abel Berrelleza, 19-10-2 (10), three times enroute to posting a first round KO.

Mexico City super feather Alejandro Sanabria, 19-0 (15), kept on track with a third round KO of 39 year old journeyman Jorge Romero, 8-40-1 (4), and David Gaspar, 8-0-1 (5), captured the vacant WBA Fedecaribe Super Flyweight belt with a majority decision against Francisco Reyes, 4-9-2 (3). Boxing In Mexico: Weekend Results

By Alejandro Tostado June 15th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Lots of action south of the border this weekend and we start with a big show at Palacios de los Desportes in Mexico City where Edgar Sosa retained his WBC Light Flyweight title for the fifth time by stopping southpaw Takashi Kunishige in the eighth round on Saturday night.

Kunishige, 18-3-1 (2), came into the contest not having lost in over five years and drew with Japanese champion Munetsugu Kayo last time out but facing the WBC Champion proved to be a step too far for the 32 year old from Osaka.

It's a testament to the Japanese visitor's toughness that he lasted as long as he did against the superior skilled Mexico City man but his run came to an end when Sosa forced a referee stoppage at 1:39 of the eighth frame after dealing out much punishment.

On the undercard, NABF Flyweight titlist Adrian Hernandez, 13-0-1 (11), was held to a fifth round technical draw by challenger Eric Ortiz, 28-8-2 (18), a former WBC Light Flyweight Champion.

OPBF Light Flyweight strapholder and Filipino southpaw Juanito Rubillar, 46-10-7 (22), won a WBC title eliminator against Omar Nino Romero, 25-3-1 (11), via a 12 round split decision. More...
