On Friday night, at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, England, Jason ‘2Smooth’ Booth made his second defence of the British super bantamweight title, which he won in April this year. The event - promoted by Frank Maloney - featured 12 contests.
Jason Booth (Nottingham) v Michael Hunter (Hartlepool)
12 x 3 British Super Bantamweight Title
Hunter takes centre of ring straight away keeping Booth edging around the perimeter, but Booth gets through the middle of Hunter's high guard within seconds.
Hunter tries for the body but Booth lets loose a decent left hook which lands to Hunter's right cheek. Hunter gets busy at the end of the round with uppercuts and hooks to the head. A good right lands but many are hitting the gloves and arms of Booth. More...

Last night at ‘The Venue’ in Dudley, England, PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson of First Team Promotions hosted a fight night which provided action from five bouts.
Martin Gordon (Dudley) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
6 x 2 Welterweight Contest
It was a close contest between these two but Gordon had a good round four - possibly because he thought it was a four-round contest!
He kept going though for the next two rounds to secure the points win 58-57 against experienced Laight.
Gordon improves to 2 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws while Laight drops to 6 wins, 66 losses (3 by KO) and 5 draws. More...

In one of the most shocking upsets of the year thus far, WBA super feather champ Jorge Linares was stopped in the first round by challenger Juan Carlos Salgado today at Yoyogi Gymnasium in Tokyo.
Both men came into the contest undefeated but Tokyo based Venezuelan Linares was a former WBC feather and current WBA super feather kingpin who had stopped his last six adversaries early and was expected to win big.
Mexico City based Salgado had turned away respectable competition such as Ivan Valle and Marcos Licona during his career but had not come close to facing a world class operator before this opportunity.
During the first round, Salgado caught Linares unaware with a full-blooded right hand that decked the champion. Linares was soon on his pants again after the next assault and while he beat the count, the Tokyo resident was declared to be in no shape to continue and the contest stopped at 1:13 of the frame. Welshman Nathan Cleverly solidified his hold on the light heavyweight division in the UK by stopping former amateur star Courtney Fry in eight rounds last night at London's historic York Hall.
Fry, who has also fought as a cruiserweight, had the strength and skill to put up good resistance but at age 34, couldn't cope with the speed of University student Cleverly.
At 22, British and Commonwealth titlist Cleverly seems to be at the peak of his game and ripped Fry later in the bout with good combinations and bracing single shots.
Fry got through with a few good punches but Cleverly's chin held steady and he paid back the older man with far more in return. More...

WBA welter champ Vyacheslav Senchenko proved his title winning effort in April was no fluke as the 31 year old made his first defense on Saturday at Sportspalace Drusba in Donetsk.
Challenging Senchenko was Japanese visitor Motoki Sasaki, who brought a seven bout win streak to Donetsk.
Sasaki, a reigning OPBF champion from Tokyo, tried to take the fight to the taller champion but ate significant amounts of leather for his trouble.
The challenger was frustrated by his inability to pierce Senchenko's defense and had two points taken away in the sixth frame for headbutting. More...

"King" David Tua recaptured the crown of New Zealand boxing today when the former world heavyweight title challenger put an end to the aspirations of rugged Kiwi Shane Cameron at The Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton.
It was well expected that Cameron would have to stick and move if he were to keep the much shorter and huge-punching Tua at arm's length and the 31 year old tried to do just that once the bell sounded.
But the far more experienced Tua knew how to negate Cameron's attempts and was soon putting dents into his opponent with big, booming shots.
Cameron was just about finished by the end of the the first round but was saved by the bell. No such luck came to his aid in the second as Tua simply picked up where he left off and the one-sided contest was mercifully halted. More...

On Friday night at the Velodrome in Manchester, England, Hatton Promotions hosted their first televised fight-night. Billed as ‘Euro Glory’, the fight-card was headlined by the European title clash between Matthew Macklin and Amin Asikainen.
Matthew Macklin (Birmingham) v Amin Asikainen (Finland)
12 x 3 Vacant European Middleweight Contest
It was a very ‘stiff’ Asikainen that came out to face Macklin. Macklin looks focussed - switching between head and body shots - before landing a huge left hook which lands bang-on the face of the Finnish man and he falls back heavily on the canvas in the first round.
Struggling to get up for the count - Asikainen looks unsteady but continues with the fight. Looking dazed - he tries to get away from Macklin but the Brummie goes after him! Seconds later, Asikainen is almost bundled over and it’s a no-knockdown. More...

The WBC light heavyweight belt will remain in Montreal following Jean Pascal’s victory over Silvio Branco on Friday at the Bell Centre.
The bout ultimately ended at 2:19 in the 10th round when Branco’s trainer threw the towel after seeing his fighter knocked down and in bad form from Pascal’s strong hits to the head.
Pascal was able to knock down Branco twice in the tenth round with strong combinations to the Italian's upper body. This bout was a showcase for Pascal, who won the fight convincingly by throwing strong punches in close and using his speedy jab at points when the slower and less mobile Branco stepped out.
The 26-year-old Pascal won the WBC light heavyweight belt with a 12-round unanimous decision over rival Montreal fighter Adrian Diaconu on June 19. More...

Despite his 38 years, Vitali Klitschko remains firmly in control of the heavyweight division after battering brave but outgunned challenger Chris Arreola for ten rounds last night to retain the WBC title at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Arreola stuck to his game plan of coming forward in the attempt to take away the towering champion's reach advantage but for a big man, Klitschko has excellent footwork, reflexes and boxing skills, nullifying almost everything the challenger could offer.
Using a pole axe-like jab, Klitschko made Arreola pay for each foot gained into enemy territory and on many occasions, the champ's very hard right hand followed in combination to great effect.
Arreola's main problem early on was he could not land anything of substance. That changed a bit in the middle rounds but Klitschko proved to be able to take Arreola's heavy artillery on the occasion when it connected and also punish the Californian afterward for his troubles. More...

Last night in front of a strong hometown crowd at Dublin's O2 Arena, local hero Bernard Dunne was hammered back out of his brief foray into the world class standings by Thai slugger Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym.
Having won the WBA super bantam crown in a surprising upset of Ricardo Cordoba at the O2 this past March, Dunne understandably felt confident in the first two rounds and managed to keep his much shorter challenger at the end of the jab.
But once the third bell sounded, Kratingdaenggym was done studying the Irishman and was ready to test his contention that Dunne was in possession of a less than sturdy chin.
Just like Kiko Martinez had hit the jackpot two years ago during a European title bout, Kratingdaenggym rammed home a whistling left hook that flung Dunne hard to the canvas. More...

At the Bell Centre in boxing mad Montreal last night, Jean Pascal put his WBC light heavyweight belt at risk for the first time and came away with victory against seasoned warhorse Silvio Branco.
A pro since 1988, ex-WBA and European champ Branco went after the much younger Pascal early on but had difficulty with the good footwork and swift reflexes of the local Montreal man, who cut the Italian in the third.
The bout was a cautious affair early on but as both began to tire and settle in, the action increased with Pascal beginning to target the body and Branco looking for the jab, right hand combination.
By the seventh, 43 year old Branco had begin to run out of steam and was dropped in what could have been largely a push or even a bid to gain a breather, although it was ruled a knockdown. More...

British middleweight champion Matthew Macklin increased the hardware in his trophy cabinet by winning the European title last night at the Velodrome in Manchester, England.
The Birmingham based slugger went right to work in the first round, swapping punches with former titlist Amin Asikainen.
The Finn was soon down from a full-blooded Macklin left hook but beat the count to continue. It wasn't long however, before Macklin slammed home a right that decked Asikainen again.
Showing great courage, Asikainen beat the count again but was judged in no condition to continue the bout at 2:34 of the first round.
Matthew Macklin gains the European middleweight title and improves to 25-2 (18), winning his eighth straight contest. More...

London's Lenny Daws lost the British light welter title to Motherwell, Scotland's Barry Morrison when they met in 2007 but with both boxers having very similar ‘stats’ - the rematch at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday night proved to be another closely matched contest.
It was a good first round with both men targeting the head, but keeping a high guard. Daws continued with the head-shots in the second frame while Morrison throws a few body punches with one straying a bit low in the second half of the round.
Daws lands a right, followed by a left to the head in the closing half minute but Morrison immediately replies with a left to the body. Morrison swings out a left glove but it doesn’t reach it’s target in the closing seconds.
Both men trade punches in the first half minute of round three and Morrison goes for shots to head then body, in sharp contrast to his opponent as Daws hasn’t thrown body shots yet. More...
